    I find this quote interesting...

[Dark matter] is thought to come from a variety of heavy particles that rarely interact with regular matter and can pass through conventional objects unseen.

That sounds like another phenomena of a less scientific nature... ghosts! In some belief systems spirits or souls are more massive or dense then normal matter as well.

If this were true, I would suggest the reason that this experiment didn't find any "dark matter" is because there wasn't any in the vicinity, because the organization and distribution of this dark matter is neither even nor random.

Astronomers believe this arises from the gravitational effect of 'halos' of dark matter around spiral galaxies. (source)

Together, these two results suggest, to me anyway, that dark matter could really be more advanced civilizations or intelligences that we know nothing about.

Then what other artifacts can occur?

One thing that is interesting about wavelet based compression is that it degrades in a way that is more pleasing to the eye, that is, there aren't any "artifacts". Discrete cosine transforms (e.g. traditional JPEG/MPEG) produce artifacts because of the way the compression works on blocks: blocks are not a normal part of most video signals, and thus when they show up they are called "artifacts" because clearly they do not belong there. Wavelet transform degrades more akin to the picture being less sharp and showing less details and so there is nothing that is noticably out of place.

  21. Re:This would be a better article... on Computerized Time Clocks Susceptible to 'Manager Attack' · · Score: 1

It's against federal labor laws to work unpaid hours whether it's the employee's idea or otherwise, and for reasons which are OBVIOUS unless you're retarded.

Ok first, why this has been modded to +5 when it could arguably be flamebait is beyond me. But, having said that, I think the parent is taking the grandparent out of context. Specifically, if you are hired to do a certain job with an expectation of how long that will take, then yes, I suppose if it takes you too much beyond that amount of time maybe you are (and I use this in the truest sense of the word) retarded. Now if management has made that amount of time too short to reasonably expect one to complete the task in the given task, then management is at fault, and especially liable if they are willfully trying to overwork their employees. But if someone is just dragging their feet, or under-competent, or whatever, they arguably deserve to be fired. So if anything, the statement that you should be able to make up the difference on your own non-paid time without being fired is arguably giving the benefit of the doubt to the employee, under the assumption that management's demands of the employee in that case are reasonable.

I think maybe the major gripe with this is that people today are over-subscribing their own time to the point where they really can't afford to work unpaid hours. By the way, I'm curious what federal labor laws the parent is refering to here - does this include all those people who worked for nothing but (eventually worthless) stock options during the IPO bubble?
