    Please post the address of your AP and legal departments. I would like to notify them that there are parts of Unixware for which I am the rightful owner and that, unless they license from me, I may sue them.

    I can't tell you what part of Unixware is in violation, but, trust me, there are significant portions that come from code that I have written.

    Don't believe me? Understandable.

    Now, replace "I" with "SCO" and "Unixware" with "Linux".

    Basically, when you dial 911, they forward the call to your local 911 center based upon the physical address they have on record for the device.

    First, they already use a machine in tennis to determine if a serve is fair. Don't know much about it (how often and in what venue it is used, for example), but I think it is referred to as "cyclops" and have heard it signal faults during certain matches.

    Second, in reference to football, I've always been curious to see how close the actual spots are during a game to what they should be. Do mis-spots(*) add up or cancel out? Is there a pattern favoring a team or player?

    (*) By "mis-spot" I mean the difference between where the ball is actually spotted and where it should be spotted assuming there was a way of determining, to the mm, where the ball rightly should go.

    My guess is that SCO stole algorithms (but not code) from Linux by copying the GPL'd code into their tree, deleting the code (leaving the pseudo-code comments), and re-coding based on the comments.

    The only real way to get people off IE is to get them off Windows

    People choose IE because it's there and it's the default.

    Next time you build a Winbox for someone, download Moz or Phoenix, make it the default browser, rename it "Internet", and change its icon to the blue E.

    Chances are, the majority of the time, the user will stick with replaced browser because it is the default. They don't care that it's not IE - they just care that it lets them get to the Internet.

    I think many clients are heading in the right direction with spam filters that learn based upon a user saying "This is spam" and "This is not spam".

    Personally, I use SpamAssassin which was primed with 1200 spams and 6000 hams. Since that point, it has captured 200 spams with 0 false positives and 2 false negatives.

    The hard part is priming the databases. Maybe it would be worth it to have a database that can be downloaded and used as an initial point for new users - combined with "Spam", "Not Spam", "Whitelist" buttons in their client to automatically tweak the db to their usage patterns.

    I've used RackShack for the last year. They are a little more expensive than you listed ($99/mo), but you get your own machine (Celeron 1.3, 512MB RAM, 60GB drive) and 400GB of monthly bandwidth.

    No -- they will probably find a way to get you fired for pointing out their ineptitude. Better to go above their heads and make sure the bosses know that their marketing droids just spent 200k when they didn't have to.

    Removing the "backdoor" gains them NOTHING.

    Hopefully, they realize that those that "incorrectly" use the backdoor wouldn't give them valid registration information anyway.

    Let's say 10,000 /.ers read the article through the archive link. If they get rid of this link, the same article would precipitate:

    - 5,000 "nyt_suxors_2003april" with password of "password"
    - 3,000 "initial_lastname_04_2003" with a password of "password"
    - 100 people that register correctly

    and the rest not reading the article (or waiting for a karma whore to post it).

    Frankly, that's a lot of bad data that can be avoided by providing the archive link.

    First, Federal Corporate taxes are due on March 15th, not April 15th. I can't vouch for other states, but PA Corporate Taxes are due 30 days thereafter.

    Regardless, do the following:

    Go get form 1120-A from the IRS. Fill out the block with your corporate name and address. Fill out Box B and C. Assuming your started out with nothing last year and had a net loss, put "0" on D.

    Put your revenue in 1c and 11. Put your expenses in 22. Subtract 22 from 11 and put in 24. If you had a net loss, 25c will be 0 and 26 will be the same as 24. 28, 29, 30 should be 0.

    Fill out Part II.

    On a separate sheet, type the following:

    Apache will bind as root and then drop privs to the named user.

    Forget magnets for arc detectiong - why don't they just use a microphone??

    It shouldn't be too hard to write software to detect the "tick" and "tock", analyze the timing pattern, and adjust based on that.

    The adjustment should still be made with motors since many grandfather clocks use non-ferrous materials.

    Actually, you might want to leave you Kodak at home when you travel through Amish country.

    A rumored Amish belief that I have heard (never validated, though) is that part of their soul is stolen when a photo is taken of them.

    Actually, it _might_ be worth it for Apple to port the apps over and sell them (maybe $99 for all but iDVD, $149 for all)

    Probably could generate a good revenue stream, get PC users "used" to Apple's interface, making them more apt to switch (plus, the fact the iLife apps are "free" with new Macs, and, except iDVD, free to existing Mac users doesn't hurt either).

    There is nothing wrong with the image.

    41 pictures were taken with a solar filter on - after which the negative was unexposed except for the 41 "dots" that are the sun.

    The solar filter is then taken off. The photographer waits until the frame looks good and the negative is then exposed one more time to "add" the foreground. The cloud and the Parthenon are only exposed once.

    Judging from the shadows and the fact that the suns are due south, the foreground shot was taken in the morning (lit from left, which is east).

    Maybe not, but extend it a littler further with:

    Wouldn't this ruling make all "Email this to a friend" links illegal?

    If I understand the ruling, if Person A causes site B to send an email to Person C, then Site B spammed Person C.

    How is this any different than the Email a friend feature of many sites?

    Forget given them a tool they have to use -- make it automatic.

    As part of the subimission process, compare the included URLs to the URLs of previous stories and generate a warning page if there are matches.

    Something along the lines of:

    and
