Slashdot i guess has taken on its cultural life away from the whole news for nerds thing.. then again.. maybe the people who do the website have just changed the focus of there interests... who knows.. I agree with what you say a little but you gotta pull back your focus a little..
"2) Name recognition. The Playstation was the king of consoles. Every platform gamer pretty much had one."... and "Sony has been doing the console thing for a long time"
Ok well when playstation came on long ago.. what did they do before in the US let alone the world as far as consoles... NADA!!!
"3) They got to market before Microsoft. Self-explanitory. " I seem to remember N64 Got to the market before PSX but where did that go.. yes it did have a good run and a lot of people liked it but who's still selling new releases PS1 or N64 we know the answer.
Not saying who's gonna win.. and yeah i really don't like M$ but I have an XBOX and I love it.. and for me.. PS2 didn't come out with any games that i thought were good until recently.. a year after its release.. so i'd say you can't write it off yet.. i'd say they're both around to stay.. M$ sure isn't gonna give up.. and neither is Sony.
Didn't we see this a month or so ago.

I think there needs to be a seperation of IT undergrads. Out in the real world CS majors and MIS majors and CIS majors may all vie for the same or similar jobs... BUT.. their curriculums in undergrad institutions are governed many times by completely different schools of thought. Many CS departments I've seen (plus my own) are run my science and research oriented faculty and many times see unix/linux as a great learning tool to tear down the system and show their students how the stuff really is programmed. As for MIS departments (at least in my college) are usually under the school of business or at least have a tie with that school. This is a completely different school of thought from the Science or math proffessors. The business guys see Micro$oft as the big kid on the block you should get behind.. which they are in some respects.. but still either way. Many of these programs would naturally go toward microsoft products.. and programming. As far as when you get out into the real world.. hopefully you've learned enough to be able to deal with any of these situations and hopefully learn the specifics as you work.

"to tell them that Joe watches a lot of baseball, likes Situation Comedies, and responds favorably to commercials that use humor."
So does how do they see that i respond favorably to a commercial.. if its live i can't fast forward.. DO they Have a Microphone that monitors laughter and a video camera that monitors a scowl... Oh MY!!! maybe they do.. EEEK!! i'm scared.. better be wary of your webcam and if they start adding voice recognition into the stuff..
So whats the difference between TV advertisement... and the ThinkGeek banner... or maybe even the sign next to the local Electronics store saying they've got XBOX's.. well you know. Advertisement isn't evil.. its just the way complete randomness of it right now. You can't choose adverts easily they're force fed to you. I agree with the author, if they tailored advertisements to the person they'd be more valuable. One so the consumer can easily find what they want. Second so the advertisement gets to the right audience. The adverts that I never like are like seeing feminine hygene commercials when i'm a guy when I seriously have no reason to even care or even want to think of that subject. So if this technology can make me see the stuff i want.. thats cool.. Cause you know what everybody wants something to buy that isn't a need like food or something. You can say word of mouth is good for this.. but hey.. an advert go to the first guy who started the word of mouth.. otherwise it wouldn't have started. Now think about that one.. Say you find out about slashdot.org from the creator.. you say thats not an advert.. bullshit.. even if you're his friend.. then when you tell someone who's not your friend and just a random person.. BAM! thats an advert.. Anyway i'm done my tangent...
instead of neading to mix everything in to your computer one at a time.... you could just network your equipment and plug it into your ethernet chord... And bam.. your computer recognizes the instruments and you can record... Now that would be awesome.. no worrying about analog sound levels being too low or weak... it'd be digital so the sound is totaly regulated by the software.. I think this is awesome
i wish i new a URL for this stuff... I saw it on the History channel one day.. GOTTA love the History channel... maybe their website might have something...
what i want to see on these PDA's is a good one hand easy to ues keyboard. I mean.. one that is not a QWERTY... ok Yeah you'd nead to relearn it but its not that hard to relearn something like that anyway.. Also it would be a hell of a lot easier and quicker to do stuff.. I mean QWERTY was an invention to make sure typewriter hammers wouldn't jam together.. Thus it made you type slower and all the commmon keys are far apart for less probable jamming. Now we have computers we shouldn't need to use that anymore. I mean hell I would love to be able to type with one hand quick and easily.. and I know that a keyboard could be made for this.. and it would be easy to use. (i have seen the half keyboard that was made but... thats still QWERTY and its still harder than it needs to be)
I saw an interview with BT a little while ago. Where he was talking about just this thing. He had picked up one of those headband brainwave trackers. (I believe slashdot a while back had put a story about a similar product to use as a mouse or keyboard.. for people with disabilities). BT was talking about using it to track his brainwaves while he does his music at a show.. and then come up with a way that it would control his lighting rigs and possibly some of the music effects, such that the feelings he had at the time would actually control the equipment. Not only giving him more control but giving an interesting edge to the "vibe" he is trying to produce at a show.
I agree with your points.. kinda wrote that pretty quick.. but I'm just saying the internet is a great tool.. People just have to respect it and not try and base themselves soley on things that aren't really there..
I have friends like you.. I agree its a great project if you just want something to do and you feel like being inventive. But seriously.. What you're asking for is kind of odd. Specifying lower standards for some and higher on others.. just doesn't work on pre-made machines. If you want a laptop that runs like a champ go to a big companies re-sale auction of old equipment and buy your self an old laptop for like 400 bucks and it will run linux like a champ. I personally went the route 2 years ago of buying the cheapest laptop I could find at the time. It was an E-machines E-slate.. yes many people groan when thinking of E-machines but I ran linux on it.. an it ran like a Champ... A champ I tell you.. As well as it was a kickin' half life server in linux... thats all.. I did much much coding on that thing in my senior year of college.. and the damn thing could take a beating plus it was cheap to begin with..
Sounds like this should be a great book. It confirms what I've observed just from being in college and now just getting out into the world. I really couldn't believe that all these dot-com failures that the market has been so scared about were a myth to begin with. I mean there wouldn't have been any start up money to fund these businesses that have eventually failed if the "potential" wasn't there. So i surmised a short while ago that it had to have been faulty business practices. Not to say some weren't doomed to begin with just because they were a fad. Many others though could have had a chance. But i'm just an observer right now looking through a sheltered window in a sense since i have yet to really get my hands dirty in the IT world. I can say this though, coming from my own interests in history, the business world will learn from this and in time will take on the internet as a tool. When they do there will be much more attention payed to how they use it. Overall I still believe E-commerce will have its day, business just need to respect its disadvantages, instead of turning a blind eye to them.
Being that you have a B-horror movie cult following from your involvement in the Evil Dead movies and Army of Darkness.. as well as your various TV shows and cameos.. What is the most noteable thing someone has ever done to meet you? Whether it be strange, scary, funny, or just plain insane.
A mouse I highly reccomend for gaming... if you're looking for mouse resolution for high speed gaming and such.. where you're moving the a lot and fast... get the Logitech Wheel Mouse Special Edition Optical... its red yes.. so that can be cool or not cool depending on who you are.. but its got 800 DPI and its 30 bucks.. whereas most mice, and optical mice, have like 400 or so.. and you notice it playing things like counterstrike and you're zoomed in for a snipe. To give you an idea of the accuracy.. Does anyone remember the Boomslang line of gaming mice.. the low end one had 900 DPI (ok a little more DPI) BUT it was like 80 bucks.. and this logitech is CHEAP!!. plus no ball to get gunked up..
its not a dash mounted thing at all.. its a portable MP3/CD.. but I got the Rio Volt 4 or 5 months ago and I can tell you I love it for driving and stuff... The only down side to it, is that it didn't come with a car kit I had to buy a universal one.. but otherwise its pretty awesome... The major selling factor of the Rio Volt over any other Portable MP3/CD is that Rio gave it a flashable/upgradeable ROM. You just download their update from the website burn the file into the root directory of a CD-R or CD-RW(preferrable so its reusable)... and wham bugs are fixed as well as it will play new codec formats instead of just MP3's... right now it plays mp3's and WMA but all they have to do make it play other compression codecs is make a new ROM update.
I use Mp3's for a practical aspect.. like for long trips I have the RioVolt so when I'm driving for 8 hours I don't have to mess with switching CD's on the fly as well as I don't have to mess with spending gobs of money on a CD changer that I have to pay someone to put in my next car.. The portable I just unplug and take with..... As for ripping my music.. the only reason I do this is to mix between albums for long sets of time.. Otherwise I stick to just listening to singles CD's or Records.. Yes and I did say Records.. I love vinyl.. i just haven't scrounged the money yet to really invest in more vinyl stuff and a better sound system to play records on. Anyways.. with that said I still use the bitrate I started with which is 128k... for me yes, you can here a difference if you're really listening for it but that small small loss for most music is worth it to not have to dealing with changing CD's every 45 to 70 mins of an 8 hour trip.. as well as not haveing to reconvert everything to a higher bitrate... really I say if you're going to spend the time to go to a higherbitrate then just goto a lossless codec as a previous reply suggested..
the hijackers not only presented valid ID but also the ID they had were completely legally obtained by naturalization or VISA Identification... soo really how does this solve the terrorism problem.. It so sad to see so many people using these tragedies as a spring board for their own personaly gain and political platforms
Hmm.. hit the links.. then hit back.. no programs pop up?

ummm fact.. yes they did redo the controller in japan.. actually its about the size of the Gamecube controller
