Yes, write their chief information officer and offer your services as a security expert. Tell him/her that if you don't show them a security hole within one week, they won't have to pay, but set your hourly fee at a high rate. Forty hours at $100/hour, or whatever.

Fact is, as an American citizen, I am welcome nowhere. It requires a God awful amount of money to leave the USA, but few places would accept us anyway, and usually only if we're wealthy.

Once while visiting a German speaking section of Switzerland, I approach someone to ask ```Sprechen Sie Englisch?'', and the response I got was, ``I speak English, but I don't speak American.'' That about says it all.

Anyway, of all the people sharing theirs intimacies via ear buds, I bet it escalated to far more dangerous activities . . . young, attractive, and cool . . . not your typical M$ crowd. However, that change did not occur until Mosaic was released.

Now, if you want this nonsense to STOP, you'll need to cut the money supply to these dopes. And please stop looking at government as THE answer to whatever ails you --- they're the problem, and they're more dangerous than any demon they can invent. To be frank, it's your active participation in the system that creates this nonsense in the first place. BTW, voting is not going to help, we're well beyond that stage. Anything less than direct action will be for naught.

You said, "The real insight of this story is the listing of the products into "credence goods". If you can call this new insight. Otherwise, it's just stating the well known/obvious." And I agree, but we also need an infrastructure where encryption is a given and is transparent to all users. For example, I believe https works, but I don't really need to do anything special. This of course largely depends on an infrastructure where certain certificates are trusted. Now for email, s/mime works, but to many it looks scary and requires users to think.

BTW, thawte offers free s/mine email certificates.

Nothing is maintained as it should be, but we're being charged outrageous fees to use them. Oh, even though they're not being properly maintained, it seems that a culture of perpetual construction is present where work is constantly being done to slow traffic and to make the roads even worse than they were before. I always say that it cannot get worse, but it always does!

It's the "if I don't get caught syndrome." Basically, you'll get caught and then they'll fine you big time. For example, many years ago I ordered a computer for a NYC business, but I had it delivered to a New Jersey address for safety reasons. The computer was never used in NJ, but NJ still came after me for (use tax) sales tax + a BIG FINE. Funny thing is, the business in NY already paid sales tax in both NY and NYC. I tried to explain this to NY division of taxation, but they just wanted their money.

Fact is, out government is run by common street thugs, and if they want your cash, they're going to get. No matter what, you're not safe in America.
