"I'm most proud of the bed. It's very humane, like an ambulance," Kang says. He points to the power-driven metal stretcher that glides out at an incline. "It's too brutal to haul a person aboard," he says. "This makes it convenient for the criminal and the guards."

So, basically, it makes it easier to ignore the fact that you're killing someone.

I'm not against capital punishment, but I think that there should be a certain amount of raw reality involved in it. No coat of sugar.

Whenever someone is exulting over inventing an instrument of punishment or death like this, I always wonder if they ever entertain the thought that they might have it used on them. I believe the story of Dr. Guillotine being serviced by his own device was a myth but this idea is a popular one, recurring throughout history. It just seems like poetic justice.

Wow, Death Vans. That's creepy as hell. I mean, I know that there's been state-sanctioned capital punishment since the beginning of civilization but it just seems creepy when combined with the mobile approach. I'm used to seeing mobile clinics, mobile libraries, mobile law offices, not mobile death chambers. It reminds me of all the creepy art from the christian apocalypse stuff at my church when I was a kid. Once the UN ushered in the New World Order and the Antichrist became the General Secretary, all people now professing to be Christians post-rapture would be put to death, always by guillotine. This was absolutely agreed upon, just the same as the Antichrist working through the UN. Jack Chick had creepy little moto-guillotines in his drawings where smartly-uniformed motorcycle cops would drive up in an open-cab vehicle that looks like a landscaping utility tractor, the guillotine in the flatbed. They would then line up the Christians for the day's executions and lop off their heads. This part really freaked me out because the public works dept. of the city I lived in used tractors of exactly the same design. I was convinced that they had mounting brackets for the guillotines and were just waiting for the order to install them. Yeesh. Freddy Krueger never did anything for me but my religion scared the shit out of me.

So would you claim the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is unsuccessful because it gives people AIDS and then kills them?

Oh, yes. Far more so than Ebola. Bear in mind, we're not talking about anything where design is used, the evolution of these viruses are random and directionless. Success and failure are human value judgments. If we say success is killing people the fastest, Ebola wins hands down. If we say success is spreading to the greatest number of hosts, Ebola fails precisely because it kills so quickly and dramatically. By this standard, influenza is even more successful because it kills far less people, leaving the vast majority of those infected alive so they can get hit with the next round of flu the following year.

Stories like this blow me away. I have no idea what the budget on this picture is, can't be arsed to look it up, but Dark Knight was $150 mil before marketing so I would not be surprised if Watchmen is in the same ballpark. That's a shitload of money, people. I know if I had to answer for it, I'd be paying lawyers up one side and down the other to make sure that there were no surprises. "Who's optioned this property in the past? We bought the rights now but are we sure we're free and clear on this, now encumbrances, no crazy surprises?" Funny thing, Ghostbusters the name was free and for the taking when it came to shooting a movie but there was a shitty live-action show with a similar name, Ghost Busters. So when they cut the licensing deal for toys and the cartoon, suddenly there's this other Ghost Busters product coming out with toys, a cartoon, and there was nothing they could do about that. So that's when they changed the name and branding of their product to the Real Ghostbusters.

But back to the original story. WTF? I seriously, seriously doubt that Fox's goal is to stop distribution. No, this is like patent squatting. The squatter does not want the target company to stop selling the product, that means the parent stops making money. No, no, no! The successful parasite does not kill the host! No, the squatter wants the mark to make lots and lots of money because that makes the squatter's take all the bigger. Fox will let this studio do all the work of putting the movie together and then get a juicy cut off the take.

It amazes me how such an elementary mistake could be made with such big dollars at stake. I see similar mistakes on a smaller scale all the time. The most common one is zoning screw-ups. Some poor schlub invests a lot of time and money in putting up a sports bar or some other business and later finds out that the area isn't zoned for it. What the hell? Shouldn't this have come out at some point during the process? Shouldn't his lawyer have seen it, shouldn't it have come up during permitting, applying for an alcohol license, something? And with this guy putting up so much money, you'd think he'd have done his homework. But no, so sorry, business goes buh-bye. Holy shit.

I saw another one of these where a builder didn't do the proper soil testing that was supposed to be done before beginning construction of a sub-division. The long and the short of it was that the lots needed massive preparation to support the weight of a house because a lot of infill was used. Was that prep done? Nope. So the slabs were cracking shortly after construction. WTF? Apparently it's a successful tactic to do fraudulently incompetent work under a corporation, then bankrupt it before the lawsuits are filed. I don't see how people can get away with it but they do.

What we see in the US is not capitalism, it is corpratism, an unholy alliance between large corporations and the government. This is why you see laws created to make more profit for large companies, and bail outs from the government to large companies who lose a substation amount of capital due to bad business practices.

I do find this amusing. I grew up in the 80's and got my first dose of "how the world worked" then. The Ruskies are commie, the good guys are capitalist, and we've got the white hats so we know we're right.

Then I read up more on communism and find out that it's never really ever been tried. Sure, the Ruskies and Chicoms say they're running communism but they aren't. In fact, the ways that their systems diverge from communism are antithetical to the very nature of communism! The state is supposed to become unnecessary and wither away! I don't see any withering going on.

I read up some more and I see that our system ain't exactly capitalist either. The very nature of capitalism is supposed to rely on pure competition with inefficient and underperforming companies allowed to fail. Government intervention in the economy is a distortion! What do we have? We have businesses custom-writing laws to protect outdated business models, government is told not to put in price controls and things to help the workers but my God, won't someone think of the CEO's and provide a bail-out?

This disillusionment is just like growing up in the Church and finding out the whole point ain't Jesus and heaven but making money and molesting little boys.
