I plan to make my kids read all those books, save Harry Potter because that series is a complete waste of time. A problem that exists with censorship is that it just represses tough issues people don't want to deal with. God forbid people be proactive and actually get involved with their children to contextualize situations. Stop using TV and Video Games as a babysitter and experience the world with your children.
Hannibal Lecter is a poor example though, through his paradigm the people he killed were not innocent they had offended him in someway. Lecter is a social deviant for sure, but he doesn't just kill people. Every person he kills in some way wrongs him or others, in many respects he is a vigilante. If you don't agree, go watch the three movies again and look at the relationship his character builds with Clarise, why do you think he cuts his own hand off at the end of Hannibal as opposed to hers?
Acidic, if I had mod points I'd be giving you one right now. Your argument in favor of free speech was superb, before reading your post I was about to respond but was having difficulty articulating the point, excellent job.
The only time I ever get motion sickness from video games is when I use one of those goddamn VR helms, I remember trying to play Dark Forces with one of those things on, I wanted to throw up after like four minutes. Worse yet, my buddy had these big screen TV goggles that he used to play playstation on when his roommate would go to bed, I tried playing EA's baseball game and was ready to be sick within 10 mintes... to be fair I was drunk at the time too:)
That's a fair critique, and the point that I was attempting to illustrate. The polis has to be responible because if they are not, who is? Saying a politician lied to you does not remove the burden of responibility from you.
We may have been able to change the policies "years ago" but if you're a citizen of the United States you have to acknowledge that you've implicitly agreed to these policies by being a very citizen of this country. I'm not attempting to profess that the US has done no wrong, and I'm a staunch supporter of ousting Saddam, but when I'm trying to say is that many Americans spend so much time blaming politicians but refuse to take responibility for the climate of the world on any level.
That's why I love Blizzard, WarCraft 2 was the first game I bought from them and I absolutely loved it. I probably played it for three years... good ole Kali. Anyhow, they manage to fend the publisher off and always delay products at least eighteen months but what comes off the line has been worth purchasing. What other company releases a patch on a game that changes the entire way its played, adding new challenges and goals while not charging people who already own the product a penny? {1.10 Patch for Diablo}.
Total Annihilation was boring and pointless. Warcraft 2 on the other hand was the pinnacle of RTS. The two races were quite even and it came down to a battle of skill, although I think my opinion is slightly rose colored due to the fact that the last time I played warcraft 2 I won a game 1 on 6:)
I must say I whole-heartidly disagree with you on many of the points that you complained about.
1) Trinity's death served a purpose, it was a humanizing factor. This story should be viewed as an allegory to human existence. We succede, we fail, we live, we die yet the struggle is always occuring. Furthermore she touches on the fact that ultimately love is the most important thing.
2. Ok I would agree here, it was a bit drawn out.
3. Neo losing his sight was incredibly important furthermore you have to close the bane plot loop up. Neo's lack of visual sight opens his eyes to another visual world. I haven't fully wrapped my mind around this one but I none-the-less feel its important... take this objection how you will:)
4. That's the whole point of the the human drama. We struggle and we fail but we get back up and try again. If you view it from a good-evil win-lose framework it's very disappointing but if you're willing to step back and view it from the framework of what makes us human it's a perfect ending.
5. Eh, what'd you expect an Oscar winning performance? It's Keanu... lower the bar:)
6. Willful suspension of disbelief, although that might be a bit much to ask. I would say his whole jacking in is a little odd but maybe he's got some WIFI going on or something.
I think many people are missing one of the quintessential points of the movie. Ultimately it has nothing to do with whether the humans can defeat the machines or vice versa. I see it as an attempt to define existence. There many scenes throughout the movie that force viewers to relook how they interupt relationships and how we define certain things such as "programs". It makes one step back and question what makes a human human, what gives purpose to anything. The ending fits the movie very well because it represents the human drama that we all live in, we try and try again to no avail. We take risks, sometimes we succeed and sometimes we fail. All this we do because it is part of being human it is what makes us, us. For the humans to be free from the prongs of the machines would be a terrible ending, because it is the struggle that meaning and purpose is derived.
Second point that I feel is important to take in, of course there will be plot holes and things that people don't like but it's science-FICTION. It is not reality nor is it supposed to be, who wants to go see a film that is completely grounded, have the fun is seeing a world that seems impossible. WILLFUL SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF people. Furthermore, I feel as many/.er's get so caught up in the idea that they need to hold everything to this absurd scientific standard because that's what/. is all about that the enjoyment is lost. Let go of it already and enjoy the story for a story and read between the technology to the allergoy of human life that is being portrayed.
I read a similar study on this topic awhile back and this study did not include an important finding that the other one did. Short people who were tall at a young age have the same advantages, or at least similar. It leads one to believe that the issue is as much about confidence as it is about height.
I find that the less time I have the better I use the time I do have. Back in high school when I played Varsity Lacrosse, we'd have practice three hours a day, five days a week. When I'd get home from practice, I'd get all my work done right away and have it done before I would ever have my homework done out of season. I had a similar problem in college until I got a job last semester working twenty hours a week. Now I just get my work done because I don't have time to spend four hours surfing the net.
I have yet to see the latest matrix but from what I can clean, the topic of primary concern is free will. I'm a philosophy major at a university on the west coasts and the states and free will is a quesiton of the utmost importance, basically there are three schools of thought running behind free will. The first is we have to have it because of X, Y and Z. The second is that it does not exist because of A, B and C and the final school of thought, which I'm much more inclined to agree with is, it is impossible for us to ever know. Immanuel Kant was the first philosopher, that I know of, to speculate on the limits of our knowledge. Basically he says that both schools of thought are in fact when we attempt to overstep cognitional limits.
Now, the question that you may be asking is, how does this pretain to the matrix? To me it pretains in that the matrix is merely a presentation of an idea that forces you to think. There is no Truth merely a set of ideas that potentially explain how the world operates. I believe that modern science presents evidence with things such as the Hsienberg/Uncertainty Principal. If we know the position then we can't know the momentum and vice versa, and if we could know both then we could predict where every sub-atomic particle has and will ever be thus in a recursive nature we could predict where everything has been and will be. I think that in itself supports the both and answer of free will, ultimately what that leaves us with "What's the point?". Which raises the question which is more important the quesiton or the answer. I believe the quesiton is important and not the answer, and the matrix gives you the opportunity to think.
I'm currently in my second year as a CS major and my University has the same academic policy but pair programming is not only encouraged it's needed given the scope of many of the projects. First year we all worked alone but the projects were a joke, second year everything a good deal harder and a partner is a must. All the upper classment have partners for all their classes and assignemnts. Hell on our quizes we're allowed to use any resource save another person to answer the questions {http://www.google.com here I come}. The point that my prof has been attempting to make is that it is important to learn how to research things and to work with other people.

Riiiiiiiiiiight, and this pertains to the current discussion in what way? Please elucidate me.
Damn you smallfurrycreature, that "tin foil hate brigade" comment almost got me in trouble at work. I burst out laughing when I read that!
