I think the battle will not be on the technology side, as most of the IT users are unaware of the strength of the technology they use on a daily basis.
I think that microsoft and google will fight on the marketing side, and also on the laws/pattents side. But i'm not sure google has MSs experience, when it comes to big lawyers battles. future will tell...
ASP.NET has a strong advantage over PHP, being the development environment. Visual Studio is a really excellent and productive tool, that helps a lot the developper. Most PHP users use basic text editors, losing the advantage of WYSIWYG.
ASP.NET also has some excellent data access and manipulation tools, managing backoffice and middle/front-office job, which is a big win over the "do everything yourself" PHP approach.
Most of the time, the success of a project isn't based on how the application runs (fast, without bugs), but on the time spent to develop it. And for this point, ASP.NET is still really good.
No release date, but a few lucky european people (I'm one of them =) got invited for the Beta-Testing of the European version (more on this at rpgamer). I think it will be released just after the summer.
Anyway, I imported the game, and I can tell you it's really worth the $60 I paid for it.
I'm not sure someone could walk out of my business with thousand dollars in merchandise, as I work at MacDonalds.
It's a place where no worker will listen to any social engineering attempt, you know. And anyway, thousand dollars of McDonalds food will probably kill anyone, in horrible pain.
Isn't that a typical "it's been so long time I wanted to get laid that I learned to live without it" post ?
Ok, there's not only sex in life. But when you start taking each/. funny post as a personnal offense, you really need to get yourself a woman/man/pr0n =)
Google doesn't have that right now, because they don't ask anyone to rate their web results
You're right they don't ask, but they can guess things pretty well. They know what you searched, and they sometimes track which linkS you clicked on the results list (there's sometimes a javascript code that hooks clicks on links...)
Thinking of the number of searches everyday, ans knowing that the last clicked link is supposed to be the one that answered your search, they can know which sites are "best-ranked" (understand "mostly-last-clicked") for each important searched word.

Yes,/. is tech-oriented. But I thought that tech-oriented people prefered making their own opinion of things, better than reading opinions made for them.
Let's play a little game...read this sentence a few times:
Product A suck, it's a total crap.
Ok you read it. Nothing special...
Now replace "Product A" with the word "Linux" : "Hey, that exactly what Microsoft says all day long ! Iread this in 12 articles on MSDN today, and man that sucks !"
Ok, now you take the initial sentence, and you replace "Product A" with "Windows" : "Yeah man, thats fscking true ! I read that on slashdot, and I belive them, it sucks !"
(I let you a few seconds to think about this)
...
Done.
Well IMHO, when tech-related people, as smart as slashdot readers can be, start making their mind about things while reading articles, better than testing/using products, it's time for them to become sales manager, or any other job where the only important thing to take a decision is the backgroung color of a.ppt slideshow, or the things they just read on the internet.
I don't think you can compare this agreement between MS and Sun, with the EU fine.
In one case, the amount is the result of a negotiation between the 2 companies (which means the solution they agreed on, is the one that fits better to both companies). IMHO, "$2 billion and intellectual property share" is a way to say "Let's try to get rid of these stinky lawsuits, to finally do some business together, and why not inserting Java in MS.net platform, to drag most Java-lovers to MS.net".
In the other case, it's an unilateral decision of the european law, that is gonna make "jurisprudence" (don't know the word in english, but it's the french word for "now every similar lawsuit will have to take this decision into account, in EU courts").

These are statistics taken from a site with a tech-oriented audience. Which is not significant.
Big portals stats would be, though.

No it's not.

Oh yes, you must be talking of that kind of protocols that can report data to a distant server, even without any network connection.
