I'll agree with that. I have tried countless times to explain to people that there is an internet outside of AOL, but they don't seem to get it.

This is why AOL still has business. People are not educated enough to know that there is an Internet outside of AOL, or they are too scared to try something new. Why has AOL been plumeting? People are waking UP.

AOL's biggest fault was not growing with the Internet. They were not paying attention to what people outside of AOL were capable of doing. A change to the business model in 2001 or 2002 MIGHT have saved AOL if they come up with a better system, but I think it's too late for them to do anything. Free email is just stupid at this point. Too little, too late.

The X Prize was to kick the Private sector into gear and start a competition... it's not like the X Prize guys said "Hey Burt! We'll give you, and only you, $10 Mil to get to space!" No, they wanted to see copmetition. And not that competition is going to move into the investor market... Virgin made their stake in Scaled, and now that's going to make others kick in to onto the other competitors... Like with any new market, people will throw a ton of money into it, there will be a ton of new companies trying to get their business off the ground (no pun intended)... Think Dot-Com bubble... only this one (hopefully) won't end up the same way. I hope that in 50 years, the X-Prize is remembered as well as Scaled and SSO will be.

I don't know about "scare tactics". If they want to terminate hi service, they can. If you want to travel down a road of costly litigation, then maybe you could have your service re-instated. But why bother, as most people do have access to several providers these days. Just go with another one.

I'm sure that eventually there will be a regulation on this sort of thing, as more and more people slowly start to use more bandwidth on a regular basis (Us geeks will always be in the forefront, though). Right now it's not a major issue for most people. There is a mean about of usage, and ISPs go by those figures. As the about of bandwidth required rises, so will that mean.

I'm reminded of the Ansel Adams article a couple weeks ago. Someone pointed out that Adams used lots of different media for different things, and he would have used digital photography in instances where it suited his purpose. Why can't we all think of an OS the same way? There are things that XP does that I'm very happy with, so i use it. OS X offers me other things that I like, so I use it for certain things. Same with Linux (though I use it much less frequently)(And now I just gave all your linux-heads a reason to dismiss me; Linux is not my primary OS, so I must be stupid). They will sell better than we geeks think they will. Apple is in fashion right now. The cuter it looks, the more your upper-middle class people will throw money at it. The Mini's will sell at $250, and when sales slump, their price will drop. Trust me.

  22. Re:Buzkashi on Control Video Games with a Camera · · Score: 1

Games really are no more violent than Rugby or Boxing.

I'm playing Vice City right now. It's a great game. However, I have had to do a reality check while I'm driving a couple of times because I've wanted to speed up and swind between cars and do things that would get me killed... all normal fare in VC.

As games get more and more "real" it makes it harder for the subconscious mind to differentiate between games and real life... I don't know how many people I've talked to that have had dreams that they are in whatever game they have been playing.

It's not that games are not any more violent than boxing or rugby, it's that the human interaction with the games is more intense. You are not kicking back and watching a couple of guys punch each other in the face, you are (virtually, mind you) one of the guys doing the punching.

That's where a lot of the crying about games is coming from. In games, you get to act out whatever fantasy the game is set up to let you act out, and they keep getting better and better at it.

Now, i'm not about to say that games lead to Columbine or any bullshit like that, but saying that games don't have an effect on people is ridiculous. I know they effect me and other people I've talked to. It's something that any gamer should be conscious of.
