Where I live, switching to DST means I'm getting up earlier, before sunrise and running lights I otherwise wouldn't need. Although it makes sundown later, it doesn't seem to save me much energy. I may run fewer lights, but I still have to run A/C, which is the major hit on my electric bill in the summer.

Plus, I find the sudden shift back in the fall to be rather depressing. One Friday I'm coming home after work in the daylight and the following Monday I'm driving home in the dark. The gradual shift of the seasons would be less jarring for me at least.

I also use Novus #2 to clean up laptop screens, especially touchscreens.

A few months ago I tried to post on a blog (sorry, I forget which one), entered the CAPTCHA and got a message that I was a suspected bot and my IP address was banned from posting for 48 hours.

I went back and carefully read the terms of use (just above the posting window) and buried in the middle of the terms was the phrase, "Do not enter the captcha, instead enter the first three letters of the fifteenth word in the second paragraph followed by the third word after the eighth word in the first paragraph in all capital letters."

A neat idea, but I suppose it won't be long before that one is cracked as well.

I have a similar setup on my Linksys WRT54GS. With the factory software it would lock up every other week -- wouldn't pass traffic and I couldn't log into it. Had to pull power to reset it. I loaded DD-WRT (23v2) and set it as you described and it has never failed to pass traffic, although every 3-4 months I can't access it from the Web GUI for some reason. I can still telnet into it though, so I just login from there and reset it.

I have a second WRT54GS (on it's own subnet providing open access to anyone in the area) and it's never locked me out of the GUI, although it doesn't pass nearly the traffic mine does.

I used to have a Blitzz router/AP that required rebooting every 3.5 days, regular as clockwork, regardless of traffic or number of connections. Pitched it in the dumpster when I got the second WRT54GS.

  15. Fact on Tin Whiskers — Fact Or Fiction? · · Score: 5, Interesting

Years ago I used to work on GE radio equipment. GE radios (Master II series) had tin-plated resonant cavities in their receivers. Tin whiskers were seldom a problem in the mobile radios as vehicle vibration tended to keep the whiskers knocked off. But in base stations the whiskers would grow along the lines of current until they shorted out the coils within the cavities.

The symptoms were always the same. The radio would be working fine one minute and be stone-deaf the next. Sometimes just opening the cabinet door would be enough to dislodge the whiskers and remove the short. But it always returned a few days or weeks later. We got to the point where whenever we were sent out to fix a deaf base, our first repair technique was to take a large screwdriver and rap the cavities with the handle a couple of times, hard. We got some funny looks from the customers but they were happy to be back on the air.

GE finally admitted that the plating was the problem and shipped us a bunch of cavities with a different alloy to use as replacements. They never would tell us what the difference was. Curious, we disassembled some of the old cavities and shook out tiny metal slivers that were finer than a human hair. Some were up to a centimeter in length.

All of the radios we had problems with were less than five years old at the time.

On a somewhat unrelated note, a friend of mine works for a company building avionics. They're still using Lead/Tin/Silver solder for US military contracts. He thinks they know something the rest of us don't.

Lions and tigers are different species. They *can* breed, but they cannot produce fertile young, afaik.

Not true. Male hybrids are generally considered infertile but it has not been conclusively proven. There's just not enough examples to test.

    Combinations that have been seen:

    Tiger(M) + Lion(F) = Tigon

    Lion(M) + Tiger(F) = Liger

    Tiger(M) + Tigon(F) = Ti-Tigon

    Lion(M) + Tigon(F) = Li-Tigon

    Tiger(M) + Liger(F) = Ti-Liger

    Lion(M) + Liger(F) = Li-Liger

Ligers and their offspring are prone to gigantism and early death from cancer. Tigons are prone to dwarfism and deafness. All the hybrids can have abnormalities that affect their health and shorten their lives, but many seem unaffected and have relatively normal lifespans and behavior.

Some of this is from my fading memory, as I couldn't find a good example on the net. It's late, I'm tired and I'm not going to bother to search anymore.
