No, I think it's more a case of space agencies not wanting to toss their multi-million dollar probes into a nintey atmosphere, 850 F (450 C) cloud of sulphuric acid 850 F (450 C)where probe lifespans are measured in hours. The cost to knowledge-gain ratio is staggeringly out of proportion on those missions. At least on mars you stand a decent chance of getting a return on your investment.

There's truth in this. I went to work for Airline X and did somthing similar. My employment- while not bad -was heavily fragmented, so I felt the need to stetch the truth in some areas. It was almost a potential costly mistake as they had hired an independent firm to do background checks which found found the inconsistancies rather easily, though it took them nearly 8 weeks to start asking questions. The only way I managed to get out of that mess was to continuely put off their inquiries. While it did finally come to head, enough time had passed with enough problems in the process for the employer to finally just let go.

In otherwords, I got lucky. Of course it didn't help that I was applying for a terrorist targeted industry (doh!), but if they can do it, so can your potential employer. Employ the parents tactics with due caution, if at all.

If this game gets a large enough user base, it might well be a minor gaming revolution in the making, simply because versions will be shipped with a mic. Sure, the ability has been around for a while, but mostly on the PC fringe with the only system to seriously impliment it being, ironically, a console. If UT2k4 can generate a large enough mic using consumer base, we might very well see it turn into a mainstream phenomenom on the PC. Other companies will incorporate mass support simply because one game showed that it was a desired feature to have by gamers, which will in turn generate the "gotta have one since everyone else does too" feeling. It's probably the one thing everybody agrees that is the best feature on XBox Live and it's way way past time for a mic to be a gaming standard on the PC as well.

I seriously hope that UT2k4 is the one to do it since they're brve enought to take the leap.

Honestly, this sounds like a list of Doc and David wish the internet wasn't. I know they haven't been around the last few years to notice that the internet is a constantly evolving entity, or the fact that organizations are constantly adapting it to suit their needs. Fact is these guys need a serious reality check, because it's damn near everything they say it's not; in no small part because it's making people money doing it. How many stories have we had here on /. about spammers making huge amounts of money because it actually is getting people rich? I mean come on--

    The web is not:

...like television, a way to hold eyeballs still while advertisers spray them with messages.

In your perfect world it isn't, but it is in this one. They musta missed that banner at the top of this page. Nope, no advertising there, no sir.

...the Net something that telcos and cable companies should filter, control and otherwise "improve."

...Until they get their asses sued off by the some malcontent weenie for not controlling the content. Let's file this one under "wishful thinking".

...a bad thing for users to communicate between different kinds of instant messaging systems on the Net.

...Economics disagree with you AGAIN. Sure, it's not a bad thing for you as an end user, but then you're not the one who's absorbing the cost to develope and maintain that "free" instant messenger service are you? Nor are you the one that has to worry about where those eyeballs go when they aren't viewing the advertisements that keep that service free.

Etc, etc... They have a point here and there, but Doc Searls and David Weinberger are living in the that hippie fantasy world where the net (and information) is free, baby, free! Maybe it shouldn't be some of what they argue, but the sad fact is it's nearly everything other people are mistaking it for.

    Gotta love those flower childern...

Less than your average record deal, less than your average pop idol and less than your average CD. I haven't done any hard research or dug that deep (ahem), but I'm guessing that even the super star of porn makes dirt compared to your average syndicated recording artist.

All in all, it's really simple-- The recording industry has a larger power base and more money t protect than triple-AAA porn company. of course, the same can't be said about Playboy or Penthouse, which will rabidly go after infringers. It's not surprising that the companies behaviors reflects the size of their empires...
