Since the start of 2008 I am boycotting(*) all RIAA member companies(^) for being litigious bastards. If they want to sue college students and grandmas, they can do it with some else's money. Metallica, who possibly were the first to be google-bombed for also being litigious bastards are now considering giving the RIAA the finger, which if successful may inspire further artists to do the same.
What do I do?
Please note this is not a discussion on the merits (or lack thereof) of Metallicas art.
(*) By that I mean not only not purchasing any of their products, but not endorsing them either. That means no downloading, streaming or listening. Anything that might make someone else likely to buy their products.
(^) That includes Sony BMG, a very different beast from Sony Computer Entertainment. I'm still buying a PS3:)
Those 532nm greenies are brilliant (no pun intended) for astronomy. However anything over 10mW is overkill and won't give you a visibly brighter beam when pointing to Rigel. Kids can buy 200mW green lasers these days for $100, which would easily burn a retina with a minimal (10ms) exposure at a reasonable distance.
There are legitimate reasons for these high-powered lasers, such as signalling and experiments, but astronomy isn't one of them.
I would like to go one step further and claim that in this corrupt age, the only way to vote with any effect on your rulers whatsoever is not with a ballot box, but with your wallet.
IMHO, that's the secret, chaps. Power's all in your wallet. Use it wisely.
This arms race with captchas and their associated cracks has great implications for an area that is sorely lacking: OCR technology.
Think about it; captchas are designed to be as noisy, distorted and generally hard for a machine to read as possible while still being human-readable. Much like a lot of handwriting and poorly-photocopied documents. Now if we can get the source that these spammers are using to break captchas we have the makings of a quantum leap in OCR technology.
Now to fill in some missing cases, can the next set of/. captchas please be formatted tables? Thanks.
You mean the same information that you have just dispensed?
Look I'm sorry about your friend, but if you feel the way you claim about giving advice on suicide methods, perhaps you shouldn't be so loose with the details.
Well the absolutely best way would be to never, under any circumstances, allow any Microsoft products near your computer.
If you've failed that step, the next best thing would be to keep your box fully patched, and off the network when you're not directly using it. And make sure your firewall is logging every packet to and from your box.

Well perhaps we can start deploying it in nuclear control facilities?
But seriously, it would be great to see working 64-bit implementations in various distro repositories.
again?
What about the hover conversion? Did it need gasoline to fly up to 88mph too?
There are 4 boxes to use in the defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, ammo. Use in that order. Starting now.
So how's that working out for you so far?

Apparently it will, but that really isn't a problem.
No sane person with any knowledge of audio storage should still be using MP3. Period.
Didn't you read the fine print of the Java licence?
"not designed or intended for use in the design, construction, operation or maintenance of any nuclear facility or colossal coffee-making robot"
Emphasis mine. And the text might be mine too.
... so no Linux version for a while then? A pity, since the OSS radeon driver has really improved in the past couple of years.
I guess my cluster will sit there with just its CPUs crunching numbers and its GPUs idle for a while longer.

Is this just a parabolic trough? Where I live most new homes have ones of these on the roof to heat their water cylinders.
Great to see it done on such a large scale, though.

Oooh I hope rigor mortis sets in before they're done.
What was that noise?
Oh, another submarine.

Watch for Tom Cruise quoting this article in his next interview.
Would you like the list, sir?
My tongue. I think I swallowed it.

I still swear by my trusty 1999 SBLive. No pissing about with which process has /dev/snd/pcm* locked, nice hardware mixing and lovely sound.
It does somewhat remind me of 3DFX buying that card-making plant, STB, just before going under.
I really hope that doesn't happen here, but I just can't help seeing the similarities.
Who wooden?
And create. Don't forget you can use that computer to create music.
There is still plenty of music you can buy without supporting those fat cats.
Of course there's a chance none of it will be your cup of tea.
Just sayin'
