  1. delay mechanism on Wikipedia Announces Tighter Editorial Control · · Score: 2, Insightful

They should have a period of delay between the edited version of a page and when the page is actually published. This gives the edits some time for review before they 'go live'. It isn't perfect but with that many eyes it should keep down on new users from being turned off because they came to the site the second it has been vandalized.

  2. lack of japanese made games on SpikeTV "Video Game Awards" Results · · Score: 1

I think an interesting trend is the lack of games that were made in japan winning awards. Looking through the list the only one I see is metroid: zero mission.

This really is the epitome of 'mainstream' gaming in America. I guess I finally know what it feels like to be in on something before it 'sold out'. Expect more of this.

  3. missing the point on Sun to GPL Project Looking Glass · · Score: 4, Insightful

Reading through the posts I see numerous people complaining about how this is pointless and a waste of cpu cycles and has no benefits over a traditional 2D desktop.

You are failing to realize that by open sourcing this project, sun can harness the creativity of the open source community to improve this project and make it into something you would actually want to use on a daily basis instead of just a gimmick to show off to your friends.

This is a step in the right direction and I am excited that they are releasing this.

  5. my indie game experience on Indie Games - Fast, Cheap and Everywhere · · Score: 1

ive been working on a indie game for the last couple months. It's a very relaxing dev schedule. None of the team works on the game full time, we all have 'real' jobs that we spend most of our time on but since making an indie game on the net is mostly a for fun and not considered a job we make good progress.

Further more, the net is a perfect place to develop a game, you can find all sorts of talent if you know where to look. Hell, 2 of our team members work in the game industry.

Indie games have the freedom to implement whatever they feel would be cool, now while this can be a boon to some projects and force them to go nowhere, if you are selective about what you want to support and furthermore where you want the project to be in X amount of time, this isnt really a problem.

Just my 2 cents developing a game with a random group of people on the net the last couple months. Feel free to check out our work at:

  8. well... on Sony-Ericsson Starts US$5M Astroturf Campaign · · Score: 1

Seems like sony really cashed in on this advertising deal already. They got a article in the wall street journal, slashdot, and probably some other major publications about their new product without even starting the advertising. Even if they never do actually put people on the streets, they got more than enough exposure from these articles alone. Think about it, we all know that the phones have cameras and can play wireless games already. the hardest part of advertising is letting the consumer know the product exists, Sony has already jumped that hurdle and then some.

  9. what about milkshape... on Software for the Realtime 3D Modeler? · · Score: 1

Milkshape is a shareware modeler that is designed specifically for making models for games/real time applications. It imports and exports all major game model formats(md3, md2, etc..) as well as the professional model formats(3ds,lwa, etc..) It has support for bone based animation and plugins. I'm currently using it for my own engine and its served me quite well.

  10. speaking of fans going out... on Is Your Computer a Fire Hazard Waiting to Happen? · · Score: 1

The power supply fan on this computer has been giving me trouble for sometime. Right now it sounds like a car engine, and I've tried everything possible to fix it(besides getting a new PS). When the thing does stop, i usually need to hit it a few times with a pen or something to get it going again. During that time, however, the power supply gets real hot real fast. This is one of the weaker PS's too, I can't imagine what sort of fire hazard the higher wattage power supplys will be when they start to go bad. Also, what about the computer illiterate? I know tons of friends that are using old computer made by packard bell, dell, etc.. and they don't even realize when their fans go out. This could end up being a VERY serious problem.

  12. How my school does it.... on Calculators vs. PDAs in the Classroom · · Score: 2, Interesting

I just graduated from high school. My mathematics classes have been using graphing calculators as a standard since sophomore year when I took Alegebra 2. We still are required to learn all of the formulas, and how to compute them by hand. Most of our tests have a calculator part and a non calculator part. The key steps in the calculator part do not deal with calculators at all. For example, when I took calculus BC my senior year, we would have to write out the integral first before using the calculator to evaluate it. This demonstrates the knowledge being tested as well as calculator proficency(which was required by the Advanced Placement tests we took at the end of the year).
People that say you need to be doing it the old fashioned way just think we are using only calculators and nothing else. That is not even close to the truth. Calculators are a valuable aid in a high school mathematics class and I could not even imagine what I would have missed out on if they were not utilized during classes.

People see the better deal at walmart and don't think twice about how they are going to get windows on there, illegally.

All you are doing is delaying the process. I know its a bitter view, but its a truthful one.

I'm gonna fight the crowds even more this year to get tickets to the opening show of ep 2 now.

  16. Developer Relations on ATI vs. NVIDIA: The Next Generation · · Score: 4, Insightful

NVidia's developer site is why they will win the GPU war. Only because they help developers by prodiving an extensive forum in which they can educate themselves about their technologies. I recently started researching vertex programming, I went to NVidia's site and they had a entire SDK dedicated just to it. I haven't see anything like that on ATI's site. Keeping the people that develop for your hardware informed is the only way to win support, ATI hasn't realized that yet.

Our poster is based on one of the posters for the classic 1951 science fiction movie The Day The Earth Stood Still. Yes, KLAT2 is an obscure reference to Klaatu, the fellow from outer space who came, with the robot Gort, to explain to all the people of the earth that if humans cannot work together in peace, the earth will be destroyed for the good of all planets. Of course, in the movie, Gort didn't have an AMD Athlon logo on his chest and Tux, the Linux penguin, wasn't the actor inside the suit... it's a very good movie anyway. ;-)
