Horrible idea. The tools parents need already exist. I don't need anybody rating websites for me or my family and I certainly don't want to pay for this service for those who think they do need it. I have a better solution for them, take away their internet as they are obviously too stupid to safely deal with it on their own.
>IDK about the States. The site mentions a ludicrous amount of bottled water, is that because US tap water isn't potable or is it just a fad?
Most bottled water in the States is just TAP water from some resonable source, perhaps but not always with a minor bit of additional filtering. Then marked up an extreme price which creates the illusion of it being something special.
All I can figure is the high price for your newly bottled tap water is for the convenience of throwing the empty plastic bottle in my yard when you are done with it.
Personally I've been happy without working flash on linux and was hoping the "problem" would spread. Having flash take over so many websites limits where I go on the internet but I see that as a good thing. It's a filter on content and/or sites that aren't worth my time.
Your links work great but my representatvie Joe Barton has a nonfunctional "Letter to Joe" email section. I was invited to enter my comments into the little 3 line x 20 character box, and then the submit denied for not getting the captcha thingy right. Funny I have no problem with them anywhere else. Somebody should tell Joe Barton that his website email is borken. Maybe that's why he's so out of touch...
>>In other words, if your ISP is doing something douchy like this, you can use another nameserver/run your own. That was not really an option with sitefinder.
Not always true. Hughes Satelite intercepts ALL DNS even if you Opt-out, or use some other DNS server. I haven't investigated running my own DNS which sounds like it would solve the problem of them being in the middle.
Unlike 2001 after the dot com bust. IT was in a shambles with job losses everywhere, no relief in site and then followed by 9/11.
The Shrub was quick to protect airline workers AND EXTEND their unemployment benefits while my benefits were expiring, money running out, certainly no new prospects with the further collapse in the market due to 9/11.
I felt great for the airline employees getting taken care of, while I prepared to move myself OUT of the IT field as a defensive measure.
I'll probably never make the same kind of money again, but I'm much happier overall, and I'll never go back to an IT based career.
Good luck to all still trying to make a living completely unappreciated - worse than plumbers but just as necessary.
Excuse me but WTF does being against "legal" abortion have to do with religious beliefs. I know plenty of smart people that are against abortion in any form that have no religious beliefs what-so-ever. An anti-abortion stance does not equal a belief in creationism.
I'm not going to argue your statements other than to relay MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE with the CANADIANS customs people that took issue with me a citizen of the USA calling myself an AMERICAN. I got SPECIAL TREATMENT and INTERVIEWS for this offense. Calling myself an AMERICAN, I was told we're ALL AMERICANS and that *I* was a smartass.
Point being, I didn't know it was such a big deal and never dreamt it could be so criminal to get it wrong when you are being interrogated for crossing a border on a stupid business trip. I was not being a smartass, funny or anything else. I simply answered the question in a direct straighforward way - but incorrectly according to the guy with the gun. They wanted to punish me for this. Not sure how I got away without any real punishment other than the extra interrogation and intimidation ritual.
My solution is I no longer cross the border - Mexico either. Won't fly anymore, airlines/TSA/DHS fixed that. Sorry for the RANT, but everyone's gone off the deep end... I'm not scared, but I don't need the drama/shit.
The most common failure I've seen has been power supply FANS, which leads to other failures shortly if not caught right away. Hard Disks, CD drives, floppies back in the day etc... all failing moving parts. If you've not witnessed any of this you've not been around long.
Did you get these guys(getfirefox.com) slashdotted on purpose? The last time I was at getfirefox.com (less than 2 weeks ago) the site was a trap trying to force me to buy some spyware remover etc. all the while running a scan on my machine to prove I needed it. It was not easy to exit the site/cancel their scans etc... If it was intentional then bravo and if not I think you did the right thing anyway. I feel sorry for anyone who falls for their crap though... when the site works again that is.;-)
Just in case you need the validation (sorry, I doubt that really) or the developers are reading this, I AGREE!! I would like INBOX to show ALL NEW MAIL, breaking it down based on which server I got it from is not all that helpful and yet that is how every mail client does it. Why must that be???
Corps and advertisers etc certainly use HTML email for evil purposes and you are the fool if you believe otherwise. The poster you responded to was correct. Just because Phishing can also be done OTHER ways does not negate the fact that HTML email makes it convenient to be done through email.
WTF? I have a father who has been into computers longer than I, though a different generation of machines. His expectations (now as opposed to years ago) and mine are not the same. He wants a desktop machine (now). I tinker a little deeper. So what? Oh, and I suppose the "I gave it to my brother" is suspect as well. Grow up dude.
My father bought one of these Walmart linux boxes. At first I was impressed, not at the machine but that HE spent the money on one. It was a dissapointment with the flavor of linux that it had installed, it seemed to be missing a lot of stuff I've come to expect like a compiler etc.
Anyway, the machine wound up sitting around for awhile becuase he wasn't really that interested in using it.
Then I did a truly evil thing, I borrowed it for my brothers use because his Emachine died (again), so we loaded Windows XP SP2 on the walmart box. This was also disappointing, it took a few tries and the limited resolution relative to the Emachine bothered my brother, he's non-tech and thinks I can fix ANYTHING.:) And then there were the near constant crashes that made it pretty much unusable under windows.
Recently I reloaded it again with Ubuntu because I am completely sick of the windows "refresh" cycles and didn't think it would improve the situation on this box anyway.
I did have problems getting the install to complete, the cd-drive is buggy and sometimes just stops responding, but eventually I prevailed and the machine runs much better with not a crash yet that I know of. It does have an annoying screen flicker from time to time, but again the hardware itself is questionable in a number of areas.
In short the distribution they chose was lacking, and the hardware is barely passable, but under Ubuntu 7.10 it has become a usable machine.
I would not however recommend this particular box to a newbie because of all the difficulties GETTING it to a stable state (note that applies to it running windows as well).
I'll take that bet. I've never seen an Apple store though I believe they exist. As for online sales, most people I know are still leary of online purchasing and for pretty good reasons.
Walmart on the other hand is an authorized Apple reseller or whatever and is EVERYWHERE. It's hard to avoid the iPod display at my local walmart if you go anywhere near the electronics dept.
So 90% iPod sales at the apple.com and the apple store? I doubt it... I'd bet Apple direct sales are less than 50%,
Disclaimer: I have no numbers to back any of this up. It's just my opinion.
FWIW, *I* do not agree. Monospace fonts are every bit as readable and certianly not painful.

I thought that was the banking business.

Isn't it sad he can't respond because they took his computer and he is not available to return the comment...

Say, ur a purty fart smeller but I don't know what that even means. I read slashdot for the posts full of big words. They make me feel smart too...
you said "Furthermore, as the price of sinking goes down, the tax can go down."
You must not be in/from the US...
You said "great real player support"
I say there is nothing "great" about real player, in any sense.

Good but a slightly better tally would have been:
24% in favor
25% against
52% Republican
"I haven't been in American that long (only almost 20 years). Has there been a worse president than this guy?"
I've lived here my entire life and studied a little history. The answer is NO!
Tandy Corp., I think...

You mention two different countries "unemployments rates" as if those numbers have a common meaning or definition or are in any way comparable.
Does Switzerland engage in games to NOT count people as well???
