  6. A ban is a hook for future punishment on What Do Court-Ordered Internet Bans Really Mean? · · Score: 2, Interesting

The ban is intentionally toothless. The ban is a threshold, that if violated, can be used against the individual at some future point in time. So if a banned individual chooses to violate the ban, they must be certain that they can hide that violation from the authorities, or they must be willing to accept the risk of greater punishment in the future. It's a low cost control tactic, which actually is quite effective considering it costs nothing (next to nothing) to enforce.

Actually, I'm having trouble keeping up. Is someone keeping track of which company we hate today? I mean really, it's just so hard to keep up w/ Microsoft, SCO, Google, EA, and the lists goes on and on. It shouldn't be too hard to create a popup when you login to /. that says "Today, you hate X company". That way the readers would focus their unfounded hatred at the right company. It would be sort of like an applause sign for corporate disgust.

Addmitadly coddling kids for writing their names on their papers is stupid and counterproductive, but self-esteem or an understanding of self-worth is really important. Kids honestly need loving parents who will raise them and let them know their valuable and can be successful (whatever that looks like for the particular child).

I'll take the bait. For those of you who don't own a telescope or care about the awesomenessfulness of the cosmos, the beauty of Alphi Centuari, or the amazing moons of Jupiter, here's the difference between a meteor and a meteorite, in laymen's terms.

A meteor is a boy space rock, a meteorite is a girl space rock. When a metorite crashes into the ocean it is called an asteroid. Meteorite's that crash into land are called asterites.
