Your second bad assumption is that even if that was true, no programmer would learn that information on their own, as if no one is generally interested in learning comp sci any more outside of the classroom.

But is it really because people are stupid that they can't change a spark plug or oil, or is it because that knowledge is really no longer a necessity for some people? I know how to change a tire and to jump start a car because it is knowledge I have needed and will probably need in the future. However I've never changed my oil or a spark plug because those are things that I consider maintenance. I make enough money where I can pay professionals to maintain my car. Unless people stop providing car maintenance service and reasonable price, there is no necessity for me to learn such things. The extra cost I pay is soaked up by the time and hassle I save. It certainly doesn't work as a disciplinary measure, what it does do is enforce a pointless cycle of abuse.

I was spanked as a child. I've never been in a fight and I'm not even sure if I will spank my children if I ever have any. Yeah it's anecdotal, but I bet you would be hard pressed to fine any proof that spanking alone makes people abusive. Have you even been spanked before? It's hardly abuse. It stings for like a minute and goes away. It seems that I'm in the minority here and I will probably get modded down for it, but I'm all for giving families the freedom of choosing how they raise their kids, as long as the kid isn't being hurt out of pure anger, and doesn't suffer any injuries.

The crime in this case should be that Lori Drew tormented a girl who had depression and risked the girl's life by psychologically hurting her. Since there was no "Making a Myspace persona to incite an individual's suicide" crime, the prosecution found another crime that was already in the books (but generally never enforced, and probably won't be enforced in the future except for extreme cases like this) that she did commit and used those as reason to punish her. Not only that, compared to the medical fields and law fields, getting a degree in CS or engineering requires much less time and effort. And long working hours? That has nothing to do with your field of study. As a staff computer scientist at my company, I can work anywhere between 30-40 hours per week. My company is an engineering company that does contracts with various government agencies and while some people end up doing overtime once in a while, it's a rare thing. It would be naive of someone to choose a different field if they think engineering fields require long hours. If you get good grades and connections you can choose a job with the hours you are looking for.

Lastly, what century have you been living in? Almost all good paying jobs these days require very little exercise, and it's not like people can't just join a sports team or go the gym during their free time because they are an engineering major. Compared to many elections, Obama's win was quite large. You need to look at the history of some elections if you are honestly trying to make it seem that Obama barely won. Bush got less than fifty percent, and less popular votes than Al Gore in 2000. When you campaign in a country that is extremely divided by gun rights, gay marriage, and abortion, how in the world can you expect a candidate to magically win 100% of the vote?

And you mean the truth about where the tax increase would start? Or the truth about accepting public campaign finances??

If you actually looked at the statistics of Obama's tax plan, there is a net decrease (albeit small) of taxes. I have a feeling your bias is strong enough that you won't even bother to check. Yeah Obama went back on his word for public financing, but if I were in his position I would have done the same thing.

There was enough dirty politics, misrepresenting the facts and half truths to go around, neither candidate can claim the high ground. I distinctly remember when I was pleased they were both behaving, and then noticed Obama going negative first.

That being said, I do think that the problems we are going to be facing in the near future are going to require EVERYONE to chip in this time, not just the compassionate types. It probably wouldn't be that bad for the kids either. I would imagine what will happen is that public schools will choose certain classes where the class has a weekly "field trip" and the kids help pick up trash or something like that.
