Novell announced they have made a partnership with the Los Angeles News Service in which they say that neither side will sue each other for copyright infringements. Novell will pay a royalty to LANS for every copy of SUSE Enterprise sold. LANS is open to doing a similar deal with companies like YouTube(Google).
In all fairness, having spent some time around Samba team members... who have wanted to forge a close working relationship with Microsoft for a long, long time... it's just a strange response.
With regards to patents... let's see.. what has the Samba team or anyone else in the free software movement done to try to eliminate the current US patent system? Answer: NOTHING
Well... there are a few "sit ins" and some (not Samba) have learned to speak Welsh... but those are just simple protests and really haven't had any effect.
Novell sees patents as something current... something with some legal bindings... and low and behold... that's 100% true! You can hate patents, loathe patents, detest patents... but at the end of the day, when you are served notice of patent infringement, what are you going to do? Is it going to magically disappear??
I don't like the Novell+Microsoft deal either. So... I'm guessing that the Samba team (again, who has done NOTHING to effect any change on the patent system) must have a wondrous idea of how solve the problem. Maybe the Samba team has offered to pay the legal fees for any and all software developers working on the Samba project who are doing Samba development or other open source code development? I guess I don't know the answer to that.
Novell really believes they did something good (really). IMHO, "good" and "Microsoft" don't belong in the same sentence. But I do understand why Novell felt it was necessary. Even if we disagree with Novell's "solution" (if it's even a solution), we can at least say that something was attempted to protect individuals (even if it turns out to not be so effective).
Personally, I would love to see it all work out for Novell... but the open source community needed a witch... Microsoft has proven to be inflammable. Time to torch Novell and see if this witch will burn.
And... if Novell is the open source witch... I guess we should all celebrate the torching. Fedora flambe anyone? This could be fun. Gives new meaning to ESR's Scorched Earth philosophy.
If you look at how disastrous the 10 year parternership between Sun and Microsoft was... I think Microsoft has found that the easiest way to destroy a company, especially an open source company is to partner with them.
Xgl/compiz is being modified already to support a 3-D animated paperclip that pops up randomly and gives you the KDE startup tips.
So... since nobody can prove (in any way, shape or form) that humans evolved from single celled organisms, we'll just assume that all who don't agree with evolution are blinded invidivduals or politicized zombies (zombie being a lower life form I suppose). Meanwhile true science is thrown into the garbage (again) and everyone else becomes double-plus-good happy looking forward to their further evolution.
If you believe in evolution... by all means continue your SCIENTIFIC studies into the matter. But don't call mere hypothesis DOGMA... that's just ridiculous. I think evolutionists are becoming more cult-like everyday. What an embarrassment to the scientific community. You know what they say about those who ASSUME....
Have you ever lived in Venezuela? They tap everything you do and even have tha capability of installing very intrusive spyware.... even down to key loggers. I have friends who have had mysterious files show up on their computers that were part of machines they previously owned... pretty scary stuff.
From what I can tell, the goal of intelligence gathering in America has not been used to spy on non-terrorists.... but who knows.... maybe all of America is as evil as most/.ers seemed to think. But I seriously doubt it.
Has nothing to do with technology or support pro/con from IBM... Lenovo's biggest mistake was failing to establish their brand. They waited way too long to come out with Lenovo branded items instead of resting on the old IBM/ThinkPad names.
People have difficulty understanding why their IBM ThinkPad is made by a company other than IBM. Sounds fishy. Doesn't sound like a good idea.
Failing to establish their brand earlier is the mistake IMHO.
If it had been the name of a lesser brand... might of worked... but people will naturally want an IBM branded product to come from IBM.
Sun also reported...that their grid went down harder and faster than similar offerings from HP and IBM. Once again proving the superiority of the new Niagra based platforms! If you trade in your old DDOS'd equipment, Sun will give you 10% off!
Sudo is a role based enabler
on
Sudo vs. Root
·
· Score: 1
Sudo is not about "securing" root, but rather allowing access to root... or other id to run programs. It has everything to do with ALLOWING access. It's main purpose is to try to end anonymity and the stepping on toes by multiple admins, and to allow users to execute certain programs as someone else (e.g. root).
If you want to secure the box, you need to RESTRICT (DISALLOW), instead of ALLOW.
Microsoft considers Napster to be a key piece of software for their platform. Therefore they are making the changes that Napster needs. On a related note, next year Microsoft is releasing their Live Music system which will allow people to download music from a vast repository. It will be a free download for Windows XP and will deliver with the production run of Vista.:)
I sorta agree. Red Hat's intention was deliberate here and has NOTHING to do with the "community" and EVERYTHING to do with slamming anything that is NOT Red Hat. The Red Hat folks are the evil ones... not Novell in this case. Red Hat has done stupid idiotic stuff like this over and over and over and over.... Of course, I do hope some will look at their implementation... but it is a LIE to say that Red Hat is somehow the "good guy" in all of this. There is no rule that Red Hat (emphasis) has to review all free open source code.
I think in a related story I saw that Yakov Epstein, son of Juan Epstein from Welcome Back Kotter, had proved that Dell is dumping Windows and moving entirely to FreeBSD (which isn't dead btw).
you: I have a problem. Colin: Do you say you have a problem for some special reason? you: Yes. Colin: I see. you: It is a problem with Iraq. Colin: I'm not sure I understand you fully. you: We believe they possess weapons of mass destruction. Colin: Please go on. you: I am wondering what we should do about it. Colin: Why do you ask? you: If we do not act now, I fear we may come under attack again. Colin: What would you do if we do not act now? you: I suppose we could try more sanctions, but I think it would be risky. Colin: Do you say you suppose we could try more sanctions for some special reason? you: Sactions can sometimes work to influence a country with regards to policy decisions. Colin: That is interesting. Please continue. you: I do not believe sanctions are the right answer. Colin: Possibly they are the right answer. you: Possibly, but I think a preemptive strike might be better. Colin: Why do you say you think a preemptive strike might be better? you: Not sure. Just feel that it is better to take care of a potential situation rather than waiting. Colin: Does talking about this bother you? you: Sort of. I do not like the idea of killing people to prevent something that "might" happen. Colin: I'm not sure I understand you fully. you: I do not like the idea of doing something to prevent the potential of something else. Colin: Please go on. you: If we wait and do nothing, we might get hit with a disaster that is greater than what happened in New York. Colin: What would you do if we wait and do nothing? you: I would begin doing some better wire tapping and other surveillance changes. Colin: Do you say you would begin doing some better wire tapping and other surveillance changes for some special reason? you: I think it is the only way. Colin: Can you elaborate on that? you: If we don't do that, we are just taking additional risks. Colin: But what are the chances that we don't do that? you: Not very good. Colin: Does this make you feel unhappy? you: Sure. I don't like playing with other people's lives. Colin: Does talking about this bother you? you: Again, sure. Colin: I'm not sure I understand you fully. you: I've got to go. Colin: Can you elaborate on that? you: Wife is calling. Colin: That is interesting. Please continue. you: Can't. I'll see you next week, ok? Colin: Please go on. you: Later. Colin: I'm not sure I understand you fully. you: Bye. Colin: Goodbye. It was nice talking to you.
Might be a bit off topic but the name 'AMD' is not very catchy or impressive. I would change the name if I were running AMD.
How about something like "AdvanceChip" or "PowerChip" or something like that instead?
How about Pentium? I think that name is up for sale currently.
This is a good thing. The Itanium can emulate the x86 faster than the 'good for nothing' 486 that was on core. It's worthless and NOBODY has been using it for a LONG time.
int driver(optr, iptr, context)
/* Driver goes here, TBD */
nv_obuffer *optr;
nv_ibuffer *iptr;
nv_context *context;
{
}
Now it's just that Novell can't submit any kernel driver or patch. So there!

Agreed. We have digg for posts like this! Well... for that and describing how to make rounded corners in CSS.
Shhh! Please don't spread this around
Oh well...
Any REAL scientists want to analyze the data? Are any left?

Even Microsoft wants to have a stable infrastructure.
I think they should try again. Surely just an oversight.
Duh.
