Mod parent up please, the stupid links to pcworld tag pages are extremely annoying and unhelpful - I think they're doing it for some form of SEO...? Or something, becuase it's not useful to the end user.
Not to be a detractor, as I hate MS as much as every other sane person does, but monopolies in any form in my opinion are BAD. Just because it's Microsoft that has a competing product and is whining doesn't mean that there might be a genuine problem with the Google/Doubleclick merger or whatever it is. I don't know anything about this whole affair, but it's not right to just offhandedly dismiss the claims because Microsoft is making them.
As long as the movie is encoded into open format, the point of passing codecs is moot. It doesn't matter if it goes out of style, there will always be software that will read the open source codec - if there isn't, it doesn't take much to code it. As for drive failure, all you need to do is to keep copying, or making backups of, the file to new drives or media. This article is alarmist at best.
What about a Nintendo Wii with the opera browser? Not only will it browse the internet but you can pop in wii bowling and some of the more frail who cannot bowl anymore would probably pick up a wiimote and start to play again.. I know I have fun and it's pretty intuitive.
Yes, take it in context, he pirated a bunch of movies - clearly not something that should be jailtime. At most maybe a steep fine, but jailtime is to keep the freakazoids out of society until we can get them (hopefully) rehabilitated to work properly in said society - it shouldn't really be looked at as punishment.
Frankly, I don't believe punishing a wrong works all that well -- you have to psychologically change the person to prevent them from doing it again. Of course, my opinion is my own, largely untrained, based upon a relatively quick judgement =P
That's as dumb as saying that people get confused by cars because there is too many makes and models. It comes down to a question of education, if they know the differences then they can make a logical choice.
Since this is an Ask article... I use an iAudio X5 (http://www.cowonglobal.com/product/product_X5_fea ture.php). The mother company is Korean, so the website and docs can be a bit funny with the English at times, but otherwise it's a great product. Rockbox (http://www.rockbox.org/) is a safe firmware replacement, and it also, well, rocks. In either firmware, the device is a simple mass storage device (with no funny business other than an obnoxious adapter necessary for USB), and KDE ([insert dig on Gnome]) picks it up immediately.
(emphasis mine)
Just for clarification, I have an X5 as well, and Gnome recognizes it as soon as I plug it in -- some people might have thought that it doesn't from your "dig" at gnome. =) Hey I'm ok with that to each their own. I've used Rockbox, but that doesn't let me use it as a USB host on the go with my little dongle - Cowon also has an american site with some well translated information. http://www.cowonamerica.com
In the screenshot, the laptop isn't doing very well. Most of the time the processor is in C2, and then only for an average of 4.4 milliseconds at a time. If the laptop spent most of its time in C4 for at least 20 milliseconds, the battery life would have been approximately one hour longer.
Wow. That's really cool. I love how open source allows you to tweak your settings down to the core like this - and Intel is the company that made it.
I find it equally interesting that you indicate that making/selling drugs is a 'heinous' crime.
Note: I don't do drugs, but I find the whole war on drugs to be pretty ridiculous.
I guess you don't walk by people addicted to drugs every day -- I do. It's a heinous crime no matter what you may think.
Maybe the war on it is pretty ridiculous (I wouldn't know, I don't see what they're doing to combat the problem) but the drugs themselves are doing a _lot_ of damage socially, mentally, and financially to a _lot_ of people. I doubt you could claim the same about software piracy.
In related news, a further report was filed for Canadian paper currency looking "like monopoly money" and "them crazy canucks got no call tuh be usin' color in their money, they's up to somethin'"
This is no different than drug lords in Columbia being wanted by US authorities.
Interesting how you equate something like breaking copyright to a much more heinous crime like illegal drug manufacturing. Dude, seriously, it's goddamn software.
On the other hand, on my 30" monitor I now find the menu is now often ridiculously far away from the window I'm working in.
Bitch whine complain.. Why, when I was your age, we worked on 12" CRT monitors with refresh rates that would make your eyes bleed hate after prolonged exposure - and we liked it! =P
Actually, I realize that you're probably older than me because you can afford to spend money on a 30" mac LCD screen.
Obviously Sony places a great deal of value on the Open Source community at large, I mean, you (You as in Sony) are answering questions from people at Slashdot, and you've also worked closely with the Yellow Dog Linux group to create a stable release that runs natively on PS3 architecture.
I'm just wondering what other sort of OSS initiatives are in the works? Can we see a scaled down graphics library with YellowDog for Homebrew Games? I think there is a huge amount of interest in being able to program your own games - I realize that Sony needs to protect it's interests and the interests of the larger developers out there, but don't you think the innovation with a smaller scaled down system would increase demand?
An answer not combed through with marketing and PR speak would be preferable;P
No Offense, but how is a Sony Exec going to answer a question about the decisions of another company? At most it's just speculation, unless Sony owns a share in Best Buy, which I highly doubt if your comment is true.
Bad example: ESR removed the saf[e]ty, waved the gun around, and pulled the trigger, and then was surprised when he shot himself in the foot. He should know better.
A gun, due to the inherent nature of killing someone, is recognized far and wide (at least when you're of a certain age) as being something dangerous. If there weren't enough signs to let ESR know that removing said libs are dangerous than I don't think it's his fault.
ESR didn't say what packages he had a problem with.
I don't doubt it was the last in a string of multiple problems. I used to use other flavors of Linux before I realized I could have a computer that just _works_ with Ubuntu - Red Hat was my first, but it couldn't keep me because of RPM hell.
ESR is important and everyone should listen to what he says
Well I don't know about you guys but after reading his Wikipedia entry, either he's kind of a nutter, or someone's vandalized his page, so I don't know what to think now.
Well if you smear butter on them, then most Americans will be close to frictionless spheres.
I think most are smeared with butter.
I doubt anyone on /. would have an issue with H.R. Giger's art being recognized as such, he's the guy who designed the Alien!

That sounds a bit like Starbucks might want to get into that. They're already selling music, why not energy.
Ack, mod parent up! I posted later this same idea thinking no-one said it yet!

Monkey, wearing a hard hat and grabbing crotch: Yeah baby shake that ass!

Wow, way to be a dick. I'm sure there were many other ways you could have said that - without sounding like a douche.
That's as dumb as saying that people get confused by cars because there is too many makes and models. It comes down to a question of education, if they know the differences then they can make a logical choice.
Only fellow japan-o-nerds would call it that instead of what's actually on the box.
Actually, scratch that, I still call it "Katamari Damacy"

Also, the D2 looks pretty slick.

Just thought I would offer my 2 cents.
So, the question is then: why should we discard my obviously silly possibility but still consider the similarly ridiculous killer lite-brite scenario?
Haven't you seen the movies? All the bombs in TV/the movies have blinking lights! It means they're armed!
Why, if the media are lying to us, what else have we got?
Doesn't this remind anyone of Chicken Little?
"The terrorists are attack - er... I mean, The sky is falling!"
