Just spend the money and buy yourself a Mac, they're not that much and it's obvious you want one. It's not healthy to go through life so consumed by jealousy. Join us happy Unix users!
An example: a cow-orker just bought a VAIO laptop, and I was helping him get Linux going. First he wants to be able to plug in a USB mouse, so we mess around for awhile trying to get it going but the movement is always really jerky. I figure, maybe the mouse is bad, so I plug it into my iBook and sure enough it just works without having to do anything. We still haven't gotten it to work right on the VAIO. Next up is a wireless card, I'm sure that will be just as much fun. Of course, on my iBook I just plugged it in and it worked. Same with my digital camera, which I had previously wasted countless hours getting to read out in Linux (finally started working when 2.4.6 came out, before that it would just error out every time). Do you see where I'm going with this?
I'm going to wait until the next-generation PBR-ME-ASAP is released before making a purchase.

There is a free X server written in Java called WeirdX that you might try. I've used it before on my Mac and it actually isn't too bad. You can find it here.
AOL does have its own content only accessible through the AOL client. I guess there are games you can play and some other stuff, I've never really looked at it too closely. And I've never had any problems running TCP/IP clients like Putty through it when visiting my parents (they have AOL). I don't see why Slashdotters hate AOL so much, I guess it's just the desire to feel superior or something...
All of those things are in Qt, and probably in Gtk as well or in the works. There's no need to dump X and all of the useful applications written for it just to get these improvements.
It seems to me that Lindows is aimed at Windows users, who tend to have jobs and money to spend on software. Who cares if the Linux teenage fanclub likes it or not?
Maybe when you told them your name was "Karl Cocknozzle", they thought you were just a prank phone caller and tried to get rid of you? Just a thought...
So everyone who wants to use a computer for their job needs to become an IT expert also? That sounds real efficient...

A quick glance at Amazon showed several PC-Card/USB model for ~$120, so it's not quite as bad as you make out. Of course, it's possible that these don't work with Linux, although I see no reason why they wouldn't with the USB Mass Storage driver.
You could tunnel it through ssh. Just do a 'ssh -L2023:remotehost.somewhere.com:23 remotehost.somewhere.com' first, then tell your terminal emulator to connect to port 2023 on localhost, and it should just work. You can even add a '-C' flag to the ssh command to have it compress the traffic, which can be helpful over slow links.
Huh? Your analogy is way off, since we're talking about punishment after the trial. Are you really trying to say that lawbreakers shouldn't be held accountable?
When you say "It turns out that..." is what follows the result of some careful study or is it just what seems likely to you? Not trying to be a smartass, but it seems almost impossible that such a conclusion could be drawn from any dataset, given the tremendous amount of confounding factors one can imagine.
Give me a break, this joke is about as offensive as the old "Those French, they've got a different word for everything" line. In other words, STFU. Thanks.
Bulk mail subsidizes your stamps.

I can just see you last Sunday, after the Packers scored a chippy touchdown to pull to within 21: "Yeah!!! Packers rule! Take that Rams!"
No, you didn't. Hope this helps.
"at least one"? You mean it could be higher?

Ugh, who would use such a large serif font anyway?
Why not just get one of the Aiwa car stereos that can play MP3 files off of a CD-RW? They're less than $200 last I looked.

You need an Athlon for that. Just lie the bread on top of the case, whip through a couple of kernel compiles, and voila!

You're thinking of "totalitarianism" here. Communism is an economic system.

I doubt if too many files coming in over HTTP have resource forks.
