    dictionary attack.
    I remember readily available dictionaries containing only what you expect to see in an off the self dictionary 15-20 years ago then slowly they added star trek references then all sifi/film/book references.
    The dictionaries are being updated with actual passwords, so coming across you example and deviations is not as low as you think.
    Failing that brute forcing 8 characters is getting easier as CPU time becomes cheaper.

    its not their choice "they are required to retain the original media for several months", although whether or not thats a legal requirment it does not say.

    Who says they had to install the software ...
    If the packets are coming across their routers then they are pretty fair game, although I doubt they did break it without the software, if asked they [could/should/would] say they only examined packets in transit.

    it costs X to send out physical mail, so X x number of mails sent has to be recouped.
    If income from sales of Y promoted by the physical mailings does cover this value and then the company sending the mailings wins (by how much is another topic).
    If it cost X to send an email and X = 0 and you can send millions then if one person responds and the spammer gets any amount greater than 0 then they have won.

    exactly and that is what they are testing as asking the ISPs directly is too much work.

    I had no problems with the controls on the standard Dreamcast controller, infact I thought they were rather intuitive.
    My mum saw me playing took hold of the controller and after a bid of experimentation was well away, the same was true of my work colleage with the PS2.
    One of the best points for Ecco DOtF was the fact in the initial enviroment you could do anything you liked and not get hurt so mastering the control system for newbies was a breaze, of course your millage may vary.

    Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future, simply amazing.
    great graphics, sound, music locations and story.
    great fun to serious and causual gamer alike.
    I brought it into work and used the VGA adaptor to show someone who had just bought one of the first PS2s and he was blown away and vowed to buy a dreamcast just to play the game.
    Hell, even my mum like swimming about as ecco just for the experience.
    Why they never released an official sound track I will never know, but check around on google and you can download all the tracks as ripped from the PS2 version.

    the last three companies I have work for have provided networked HOME drives for each user.
    Ideal for centralised backup, hot desks and easy to screen.
    Key thing was the C drive was for files that could be deleted in an emergancy, like MP3 files etc.
    Tech support walked around with a self running Ghost CD that would rebuild any machine at any time.
    (Please do not reply about the importance of your MP3 collection)

    Just out of interest what does your contract with your ISP have to say about sharing your connection ?
    In the UK all the ISPs I have ever dealt with have stipulated no sharing, not even a home network with two plus computers.
    Not something I keep to mind, but worth bearing in mind if things ever do get nasty.

    Malice was to be an xbox launch title, but only came out about 8 months ago, not a really bad game just not all that great.
    Seems that the 'talent' were not working on it all that time, the original trailers would have made it a must buy for me.
    But the question is should it have been completely killed off instead of taking the long way around that it did ?
    Has anyone got any good links detailing what went wrong ?

    I have a binary watch and yes I use every day and I can read the time from it.
    I have the blue led Samui Moon from http://www.timetechnology.com/ and it uses non BCD display.
    where did you get yours from ? what model ?

    I had a great two monitor on an Nvidia card setup running Debian, the massive desktop was great (I have one big monitor now), but I did try quake and the gap and slight differences in monitors made the display very dizzying.
    I would naturaly concentrate on the center point (the montiors were CRT and different makes and what ever I did there was a gap between the two, plus the surround of each.
    My brain would remove the stationary anommily and then I would get dizzy, followed by a head ache, followed by being sick.
    So after that I always had games windowed and dragged to one or the other monitors.

    about 6 years ago I worked on a web site for a UK mail order company.
    The main business had run for many years on massive mainframes, but being otherwise 100% mircosoft (they had a free unlimited licencing agreement) we used ISS and MS Commerce server for the web).
    It was not utill I realised that complaints about web orders were taking so long to cancel that I realised that at the end of the day each order from the web was being printed out and manually typed into the mail order system.
    Things started getting interesting when we were getting over 200,000 web placed orders a month.

    I can find 2000 people to represent a population of over 60 million and then just ensure the views represent the result I want.
    Ask 200 people on the street who had just bought a Nintendo DS (i.e. its in a store bag with them) which is better the Sony PSP or Nintendo DS and you can guess the answer.
    Where did they find these 2000 people ?
    outside an anti Evolution rally ?

    the chip used is programmed for SATA 1 which has the 150MB/s limit, the review does note that it would be nice to have it support SATA II to obtain the 300MB/s transfer rates, but it does not yet.
    As the chip used is a FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array), this upgrade could be expected in future version if the product launches well.
    It is worth nothing the reviews also found that to get even better transfer rates then a non universal PnP interface would be required, needing OS drivers etc.

    The review clearly states that nobody in the industry expected this to be mass produced and to only ever be a clever tech demo.

    correct.
    As the main stream public facing services are removed they will be replaced by underground systems(i.e. non public facing, invite only etc).
    Seeing onion proxys and other anonymity systems gaining ground will allow these to reach the public with negligable risk.

    again correct.
    I refuse to buy DVDs and games when they are first released as they are too expensive for what I make use of them.
    i.e. I watch the DVD once and am unlikey to watch any extras (excluding anime), I play games usually once through before sheving them.

    if I could find more titles at better prices I would buy more, my DVD (especialy anime) and game collections are full of 3rd of the original price sales.

    submitters may be less hostile if they knew why their submission was rejected while another accepted, especialy if the one accepted seems poor in comparasion.
    This imediately asks for more work from the editors, but anything would be better than nothing, especialy things like;
    Your submission was rejected becuase
    :: it is a duplicate or in close proximity to another published story
    :: it is a duplicate of a pending story
    :: appears not related to slashdot readership
    :: has presentation/spelling/linking errors.

    two notes about spoofing the referID
    one: its easy BUT you have to use command line programs (wget) or plugins, in other words you have to delibertly set out to fool the content provider.
    two: becuase note one takes effort you can pretty much guaranty 99% of you visitors will not employ it (of course there are execptions).
    So as long as nothing mission critical needs protecting then checking referID is a good thing for websites to employ, just do not rely on it 100%.

    just out of interest, do you reliably get a full seven hours usage out of your laptop?
    or
    does the box say the battery lasts seven hours so thats what you quote.
    you have it run for almost seven hours but never risk pushing it to the limit.
    you run the laptop utilising wifi, usb, heavy processing etc and just assume that if you did not then it would last for seven hours.

    Tomb Raider was originaly released on the Sega Saturn which is CD based.
    The playstation and PC version came later obviously taking the CD track music as it was ported.

    is 30 mins that significant ?
    Obviously if your train journey lasts 30 mins more than your current battery life then is does.
    But I would go with a margin of error of at least 30 mins in battery life depending on individual usage plus wifi, bluetooth, external devices etc.
