.. At least in areas where Broadband is available. I can understand if it's all you can get, but who would prefer paying $21.95 a month for dial up AOL when they can get DSL lite for not much more? The internet is no longer dial up friendly. Sites are loading themselves with content friendly only to fast connections. I think dial up plans should be replaced with a basic internet plan that should include a lower speed DSL with free dial up access for people who can't use the DSL in their area. Make broadband access mandatory for ISP membership and those who can't use it simply won't. And, when it becomes available in their area they can elect to connect the equipment and use it at no extra fee.

Also, since most open routers still have "linksys" as the ssid and my laptop connects to any SSID named "linksys" without asking because I left mine that way I fail to see how I am liable for such a thing.

Also I agree, by not setting up a WEP key, WPA key, or MAC filter they have granted anyone in range permission to access the network.

.. You can record any sound your computer makes with sound recorder. Record a 60 second blank wave file. Save it and Paste it together like 5 times to make a 5 minute blank wave file, open windows volume control mixer, click options>properties>recording control radio button> ok, make sure stereo mixer isn't muted and you man need to play with the volume on this. open the 5 minute blank wave file, press play on the Itunes song, press record on sound recorder. When the song is over press stop on sound recorder, cut off the last bit of blankness. You now have a basic wave file of your favorite song with an application that's been part of windows since at least windows 3.1 if not earlier.

You may have to play with the volumes on the source (itunes) and the mixer to get it to sound just right. But it works. This is also good for saving songs off myspace and other streaming sources.

  18. Dial up should be discontinued on Increased US Broadband Adoption Could Create 2.4 Million Jobs · · Score: 1

I firmly believe we are at a point where ISP's need to stop offering dial up access by itself and give it away free to its existing broadband customers as a backup or for traveling purposes. There is no reason why dial up should be offered as a primary means of getting online. With lite DSL access at $24 a month and dial up speeds so slow it's practically unusable I see no other reason to offer the service. The internet is no longer geared towards dial up users and modern web pages are full of multimedia content. It's like going to a car lot and seeing a couple of horse drawn wagons for people who don't want to spend the extra money on a car.

So, to summarize I think that ISP's need to replace dial up as primary access with an affordable, basic, low spead (maybe 512k) broadband connection plan and offer dial up as part of all broadband plans as a secondary means of connection for backup/travel. For people who simply live to far out, they can subscribe to the basic plan and just use the dialup connection.

It should be a forced thing like the coming abandonment of analog TV.

I can't tell you how many service calls I've done where I hear that something has stopped working after IE7 was installed. It's mostly BECAUSE of the added security that perfectly legitimate web based office applications fail. I've had 1 call where an active X based IP camera would fail to install the application because all the active X junk was turned off by default, even if you tell it it's ok. The same thing happened at a dermatology clinic where they also used a web based application with Active X. It might be better at this and that with stolen tabs from firefox but there is still to much that doesn't work with it. At least not without changing settings. Large corporations shouldn't be forced to send their desktop support out to change security settings on 50 PC's because now all of a sudden they have IE7 that they didn't want or need. I agree. Make apps work in firefox.

Where I work reformatting is a last resort. Reformatting for every little problem is considered a cover up for the lack of technical skill. It takes too long to reformat. If you spend an hour and a half reformatting and reloading software to find that it was a bad nic card you've wasted an hour and a half of the customers time and money. Customers also don't want their computer to look or act differently than it did before you got there. You don't want a million calls saying that it did this or that before you reformatted it and now it doesn't. If they did something stupid like download virus.exe from seebritneyspearsinherpanties.com before you reformatted it, then they'll do it again afterwards. Stupid is stupid. So, to my boss formatting is a LAST resort. You do it only when its the only option. And rarely do we spend more than 2 hours on a problem.
