Sky News is a wholly owned subsidiary of BSkyB, the largest satellite television providor in the UK. While they are often a reactionary and inflammatory news source, they are a valid source. Consider them a Fox News of the UK.
No, the company in question could have wanted to modify the engine and retain their own code, for example maybe they wanted to include a custom physics engine, or update the graphics engine in it. Under a license agreement with id they can do this, but by using the GPLed engine they cant do this. How many games do you know that use the Quake3 engine without even minor tweaking of the engine? Its not a simple case of 'Engine' 'Content' and making money from the content.
Most companies are in debt for a long period in their life, few of those companies are anywhere near bankruptcy during that period. Debt is an integral part of a company, and in many cases is considered an asset to be traded or sold off. Just because a company has debt doesnt mean its doing badly at all.
Number plate recognition is only a little harder than reading an RFID (see the London Congestion Charging zone for an example), so tell me, whats so much worse having an RFID tag in the car?
Im going to use an arguement here that often is used on slashdot in defence of abusing open wifi points. The email server is accepting the connection, its accepting the email, its accepting the contents, at no point does it say 'no', so how can it be called theft? Thats analogous to a wifi point accepting the connection and issuing you an IP address on request, which is the arguement people use on this forum in defence of using open wifi points.
1. The jet age extended transcontinental transport to millions of people at affordable prices during the last 45 years, this is leaps and bounds above air travel that was happening between, during and just after the war, which was limited to the ultra rich. Indeed the first Comet seats from London to South Africa cost more than a 3 bedroom house of the day and only then started to come down in price.
2. World War 2 was the main basis for all rocket development that got man into space. I see no reason why airtravel came out on top there, money, urgency or the right time included.
Soyuz production lifetime runs out in the next 2 years, and due to political shenanigans the production run cannot be extended currently (Russia buys them from a company in, I think, Ukraine).
Its taken pretty much the same period of time for transatlantic crossings to go from once in a life time experiences for a couple thousand rich and famous a year to mundane routine trips for millions of people a year. Why cant that have happened for spaceflight?
No, Windows Vista is the next consumer release of the Windows OS, Longhorn is the codebase for that and future releases. Very similiar but also both can be referred to as seperate entities.
Because almost all of the commercial bands had huge dollar symbols in their eyes when they first signed up, and thus signed away the rights to their songs for what in essence is a pitiful amount of money, but looks good to 17 year olds. Thus many dont own the distribution rights to their own songs, and its all their own fault.
With software you can reimplement something completely without infringing on copyright, to produce an end product which can replace the origional product 100% while benefiting from the research and development that went into producing the origional product but without bearing the financial cost. With a novel, someone can write a novel about young wizards at a magical school, but its never going to be able to replace Harry Potter.
As with anything patentable, you arent protecting that specific implementation, but the hard work and expense that went into developing the inherent value. With software the inherent value is the end result, not the method by which you get there. With a novel, the inherent value is the entire thing, method and ending.
Luckily, in British prisons, male rape is extremely rare, so that wont happen. We believe in rehabilitation rather than straight punishment, so our method of penalisation is a little different to the 'prisons ruled by inmates' method of the US. It doesnt always work mind you.
IT was proved that what happened to Opera was a mistake, not malicious activity. The CSS used was to fix a bug in the rendering of the page on an older version of Opera, it just happens that it was fixed in the release and it came to light within a couple of days. MS fixed it, move on. Im sure any webdevelopers has had pages break after a browser upgrade.
You take a photo, you take liberties, as the next reply down says - theres lots of abiguity in the english language. The RIAA is correct in saying you took something.
Yes, steal has a definite meaning, which according to most dictionaries and googles define service, is 'take without the owners consent'. Only the legal definition mentions deprivation of property, yet that is the arguement predominently used against the RIAA using the term 'steal' on slashdot. By all common usage definitions, the RIAAs usage is correct.
Im sorry, but the word 'evil' is really being used far too much on slashdot to talk about stuff that isnt evil in anyway, shape or form. It reminds me of the RIAAs usage of the word 'steal', and both parties are using the words wrongly to provide a very specific view in other peoples minds of things that they personally do not like IMHO.
Why should software developers create one piece of software, then get paid over and over every time that piece of software is copied?
Because the first purchase of that software very rarely covers all the costs. The cost of developing that software is usually amortised over a large number of sales, not just one sale, so when people on slashdot say 'The cost of copying software is zero' its basically omitting the cost of creating that software in the first place.
People got out of the habit of paying $250,000 for a bit of software years ago, back when it was called 'custom designed' software. Software still costs $250,000 or more to create, but now its called 'off the shelf' where one solution is good for many people, and they all pay less for it than they would if they had commissioned it independantly.
By spreading the cost over many copies, developers bring down the cost of the software to levels where more people can buy it. Or would you enjoy not being able to play Halflife 2 until someone stumped up $1million for the first copy and then the developers put subsequent copies out there for free?
Im personally not looking at the ID cards from a terrorism prevention point of view, but I am looking at them from the point of view that it would be nice to have a government backed proof of identity. I dont drive, my bank cards only have my name on, I wont carry my passport around all the time, therefor I dont have a photo ID on me, and it would be useful in some circumstances for me to have one. Yes there are identity theft issues, but there are also the same issues with passports etc.
No, as you dive deeper and have more pressure exerted on you, your body stores more nitrogen in your blood to counteract this. Unfortunately, as you surface, your body cant get rid of this as fast as you can surface, so you need to decompress to allow the nitrogen to be scrubbed from your blood and breathed out. If you are at standard pressure to start with, you dont have this extra nitrogen to begin with, and end up with very little in your blood.

Well sorry, but thats total crap. The BSD license is total freedom for everyone, you all get access to the same initial code and its what YOU do with it that differentiates yourself from other users of the code. The GPL assures your competitors that they get your custom modifications if you distribute binaries, the BSD license gives your competitors the same start point and allows you to compete on a level field from then on.

Its statistical noise when it goes down by 0.64%, but its a great achievement when it goes up by a similiar amount.
Thanks, and by way of this post, my Insightful mod will be removed :) Have a nice day.

The blocks over the Whitehouse and surrounding buildings is to stop people spotting Secret Service positions etc rather than building layouts.

Theres no such thing as a sure thing.
Really? I thought visas was supposed to stop unwanteds from gaining permission to enter the country. You mean terrorists arent unwanted?
THe 9/11 hijackers all had valid passports and visas, but I dont see that as a reasonable arguement for not having passports and visas.
