Most of the time with software, the price never drops significantly. When it does, there's usually a new version that obsoletes the old one, and it's either more expensive, or the same top retail price. There isn't the same kind of drop over time that we have with hardware, or consumer electronics, vehicles, etc... so software is considered overpriced. Often old software doesn't have any updates, (I.e. softIce) but the maker doesn't offer the old version at a low cost, if at all.
I'd say generally the software industry has decided to charge high prices, but can loose sales because people just don't buy when they think they're getting screwed.
Just for the record, the salesmen are required to ask you about a replacement policy, and yes regrettably they do lie. After buying one for $4 that would have covered my item, I realized that unlike what the salesman had said, I had to mail a joystick all the way back to bestbuy hq, and wait 8 weeks for a new one. While in the store, I was told I could just bring the stick in for a new one, should it malfunction.
Everyone is already complaining about cost when Apple has yet to give any estimates. You can generally assume a Apple hardware product will cost 1.5-2X the amount of a generic manufactured PC of same speed. The apple will provide some features better. Some will argue features like a flowerpower colorway are worth 1.5x as much, others just want a reliable platform for photoshop.
Apple can do this, but I really don't understand why this is news at all. If Compaq just announced they were going to make a new panel model, everyone would just shrug it off. Of course things are more important when apple does something, because they always think different. You know, apple is always first, no matter when they get their product to market.
The kid driving a malformed solar powered illegal car was not killed. He died. Not only was his driving at fault, his vehicle was also at fault which is another traffic infraction. The only thing I can say for the big vehicle haters is, at least people who drive them are rude. Minivan insurance should be at least double the insurance on a corvette, I know from experience they're much more reckless.
I'm sorry, but I don't remember anyone "attracting" me into a Computer Science career. All that was necessary for me was having a computer early on, (about 4 years before 13), and learning what the field has to offer by exploring online. By the time girls make it to the teenage years, their minds are pretty set on at least a few choices for a job. Trying to change that is harder than planting a seed before they make up their mind. So, I'd say give these girls a computer when they're 8, and if they're good enough for the field, they won't have trouble with the basics of using it.
Private network won't likely help with all those people running around with viruses. Floppy disks are dangerous people, especially if you have a head cold...
^Quoting Rafiki from the lion king...
The base has longer range because it has a higher power output. The physicaly properties of EM waves dictate that a 2.4ghz wave requires more energy to produce than a 900mhz wave. This is in part why AM radio stations are lower power, and the range is a lot better.
Actually, the way paypal works, you wouldn't have to worry about considering a resolution that involves USD, major currencies are accepted as forms of payment by paypal, and only USD is offered in this settlement.
Maybe you should stop feeling so ripped when you can actually enjoy many of the advantages of the US in your own country. All these people ungrateful about non-us options, while they're depending on US money.
Who's to say the driver wasn't lying, are you going to quiz him on the movie in hopes that he will be honest? I still don't understand how even if the driver was actually watching (likely, but hard to prove) that this is a case of reckless disregard. As many others have stated above, other drivers in Alaska are very sparse (with very few exceptions). I'd submit that it's more likely the victim fell asleep at the wheel to cause the collision than the dvd-listener.
We aren't mad about ease of use, and why does everyone think this kind of moaning is insightful??
Haven't you read about the problems of Linspire, or their licensing scheme? What would you rather have, a high learning curve known product, or a scam to rip off your Grandma. I know which one the AARP would chose, and they'd choose wrong:)
"DoveBid shall charge and collect from each successful bidder a 13% buyer's premium for each sale at the auction, in addition to the purchase price as bid. Purchasers who pay in the form of cash, cashier's check, company check (with a letter of guarantee) or wire transfer, shall receive a discount from the buyer's premium equal to 3% of the purchase price. In addition, Auctioneer reserves the right to charge a nonrefundable $25 registration fee for its own account to purchasers who bid over the Internet at a Webcast auction. All subsequent references to a "Buyer's Premium" shall include this registration fee."
13% plus $25 registration, plus texas sales tax...
Thats the problem, while these highly manufactured junk boxes (not feeling them) are being announced to use DivX, everyone else has moved to XviD. By the time the major manufaturers switch to support XviD or make a valuable firmware update (hahaha) everone will be using something else.
You could use this junk, but why should you, when for the $100 you can make your own junk... or for more something original that actually works.
I dont really see the point of getting excited about streams. Unless OGG really revolutionizes streaming (would take a codec roughly 20x as good as real...) everyone will still be better off just downloading a vid and viewing it at leisure later. The only thing streaming has done ov benefit so far is to make suscriber content (read pr0n) available only to members, and no sharing. Unfortunatly the user gets ripped by always getting cut off in the middle, and has to redownload for multiple viewings.
Ogg will not fix either of these problems (not their fault btw). Considering this, the ogg group will be required to make a huge advancement in encoding and playback performance to be seen with anything but a big Yawn...
Skeptical on usefulness, as always behind the folks at ogg.
This article is (as stated in title) about the lack of ability shown by companies who are making the voting machines. Conspiracy is up for wild illogical guesses, but the fact is, whoever is in charge of this is bungling it.
On the one hand, there's a e-vote machine that doesn't accomplish the goal that is set. On the other hand, the company fails even to evade conspiracy mongers by having the legal errors so obvious (intentional or not) that even the idiots like michael moore can pick them up, and as usual spin a totally illogical conclusion.
My own opionion is simple, all the companies involved in the election-integrity hyped machines are here to screw the government, and screw the taxpayers. The added controversy simply makes the job of these people totally unfit for the job seem harder, which insures that they will be back again as experts. Not just built-in obsolesence, these machines were made broke from the start.
Playing games that don't exist is not the only problem for a budget system. In addition to these processors being slated as "budget", the manufacturers will add junk to either use outdated, or unreliable, or undated and unreliable for video (I still remember the awe when I saw brand new top of the line P4's with that cheap stuff). Put that together with a standard 48x cdrw and you have a system that is totally void of anything worthwhile.
This is not to diss AMD, I'm sure the Sempron will kill the celeron, and likely compete with the p4 on an even clock speed, but the big manufacturers will treat it like a Cyrix (They see: P4, Athlon, Celeron, then Sempron). I cannot feel strongly enough about my friends who go out and buy a "cheap" celeron for $500. Just imagine all the people who would sell them their 3 year old gaming system, a system to totally blow away the modern "Screaming fast" PC.
Even though all the computers look the same, an experienced college student knows that they are not. Several times I have witnessed dells on my campus just shut off while someone is working on it... and this is quite irritating especially when if you want to save your work you need to use a floppy. In addition, I've seen the same Dell crash twice before the rest crash at all.
I think on another note when we are considering "home" grade computers, the fact is that a reliable machine is more out of the ordinary. This may explain people's tendencies to generate a loyalty for the machine which performs above the expectation.
Ok, so when you can get channels for $.50 a month this would be a fair deal! Not only is Dish violating their trust with the customer, they're failing to deliver, and the return should be greater than the cost.
We gotta stick together here; dump your cable, dish etc paid tv and get in on the action at suprnova. You'll be glad you did.
Please, don't complain about pc options, or make comparisons about why you'd prefer your apple computer, it never never never fits, ok! This is like saying a ferarri 360 spider and a pontiac grand am are the same, only the grand am is lighter. Of course they both hold 4 people, but the difference is the grand am has a fraction of the horse power. Don't talk about benchmarks or the "megaherts myth", we know they're true, but why disappoint people when the find out in the end that the Apple is still almost half as fast a comparibly priced pc.
Just in case you're wondering? I'd rather tote around a 3-in-1 full tower, 17"lcd, logitech (wired) keyboard with a -3- button optical wheel mouse on the side, along with my 40lb backpack. Forget the 12" Yao Ming notebook... he probably cant type on that thing without pushing 3 keys at once anyway:-)
Most of you will just read a few lines, figure out that I'm not madly supportive of Apple, osx etc... go ahead flame me, mod me down, etc... it will just prove the whole point; try not to compare pc's to apples. Different platform, different OS, different mental problems on both system types.
Come on man drop the Mary Jane and listen up! Apple hardware isn't superior, it's a known fact that it's not even Apple Hardware! You've got IBM and Motorola processors on a system with nvidia or ati video. The MB's are as proprietary as microsoft and sun. People don't use mac's because they're faster, more reliable, or not even primarily because they're cases look like strawberry vinella; People use macs because they like MacOS, and they don't care about games, or windows (how do you figure they'd run windows with only 1 stupid mouse button anyway?)
Hey man, don't take it too hard, you might be right too, but I think that your angle is probably going to be broke. Microsoft isn't trying to keep it's hold, they're "running like a constipated weener dog" to keep up with Linus, who had AMD64 for 1 1/2 years already.
Maybe Valve has done a good job of making stable games... never liked any of them enough to play. But to say that they are bug free? come on, we have Half Life 1.6? this means there were at least 5 extra releases that all broke compatibiltiy from the original release, and what reason could they possibly give other than bugfixes?
While M$ does have a "trademark" right to any name sounding like their brand, this does not justify a lawsuit to take someone else's perfectly legit domain, trademark, or name. An individual has a right to open a company and name it after their first, last, or whole name at will. If Mr. Old McDonald wants to open a Resturant (or book store for that matter) naming it after himself, the food chain McDonalds has no right to shut him down.
I would say that in the case of someone changing his/her name just to undercut a corporation would be outside of their right. Think also about back in 1986... Microsoft didn't get anyone excited, and how do you think Mike's parents felt about him?
Yeah, it comes on a phone bill, and even if you have dsl, using a phone line is required. Back when I was on dialup, I was running two lines, and the phone company actually had to charge a "FCC inter-state network connection" (assumingly for long distance) on both lines. The irony of this is, that the dedicated comm line never used long distance, but they charged an $6 for the first line, and $7 for the second... and that's per month!
I really think at this point the government has taxed absolutly everything, and from here on out, they're just deciding what to tax twice (or 3 or 4...) take for example an SUV. You buy your new SUV, pay sales tax, say $2500. Then you get hit with a gass guzzler tax, then, you are taxed for the gas you use in your SUV. then you sell the SUV, and the next owner pays sales tax again. Also don't forget about the recycling requirements for many things that a vehicle uses... I know in my state it's illegal to put empty oil quarts in the trash, and I don't get free recycle pick-up.
Right, we just hold them to a higher standard because they don't keep up with things sometimes... AOL, Netscape, Compaq... etc. If they're getting paid so much, they need to be beneficial to the company, and I could point to several who are not.
