  1. Not really... on Gnome 2.0 Alpha 1 Released · · Score: 1

Think is, KDE just finished the stuff they promised for KDE 2.0 with the 2.2.1 release. Gnome is still a better overall envirenment, and with support from Sun, the Office applications will become better, even though Abiword is still better than anything for KDE. Do yourself a favor and take a look at all the applications you really need from KDE... I did and found 0. You are trying to infer than KDE 3.0 will be out sooner than Gnome 2.0... It won't be.
It's no wonder you posted AC. :-)

If you like windowmaker or blackbox, use them inside gnome, that will take care of a lot of the bloat right there. Mostly I use Gnome applications, I just got done trying out kde 2.2.1, it looked cool, but none of the apps outdid anything from Gnome.

If you don't like Bloat, use Gnome apps in Afterstep or Windowmaker.

XP isn't even 1/8 as fast on this benchmark as Linux is, and 2k didn't make it to half as fast. Maybe you trolls out to look at the benchmark before you say were biased. I find it interesting that Microsoft is again getting slower... first with NT being faster than 2k on SQL, XP is likely to also be slower than 2k, considering the uses of pipes on windows suggested.

As far as overall performance? Windows doesn't have a chance, sorry.

  6. Re:Double Standards on StarOffice 6.0 Beta Available · · Score: 1

Netscape was shareware from the beginning, also Microsoft didn't make a browser, they used Mosaic! In fact, Version 5 still is based on Mosaic, which is one of the many reasons it's slower than netscape. Truth is, Internet Explorer wasn't free first, because it was only for Windows at the time of it's release. For people on Unix, and Mac, Netscape was the first one to be Free.

Second Microsoft did it for selfish reasons... Integrating it into Windows made it obvious they were just doing because they couldn't accept a standard unless they created it. Another reason why Windows is still not the Standard operating system.

  9. Why banner ads don't work. on Advertisers Escalate Banner Ad War · · Score: 2, Insightful

The problem with banner ads is they're messed up. You shouldn't be responsible for making people click on banner ads, they should be good enough for people to click on them out of curiosity.

Just for a few of the people who don't know how banner ads work, let me explain: Back when banner ads used to work (they really did make money once), they were run on a per-veiw basis, not per-click. When I got started advertising on my site (about 1998), per-click, and per-sale were becoming popular.

Now here's the problem with either of those methods: People don't really care how creative the ads are, so everyone gets bored, and the sites running the ads go broke, while the advertiser doesn't get many ads, but at least they aren't loosing anything.

Per view is a better way IMHO, because the ads seem to be less boring, and the sites make more money. In turn the advertiser will get more people because the ads are less boring. Putting this back into the topic... People might not block ads if they were less boring.

  10. Linux is not the Alternative! on Microsoft Du Jour - Talks, Upgrades, Salaries · · Score: 1

I've said it once before, and I'll say it again. Linux is not the "Alternative". When monopoly's such as Microsoft decide to be non-standard with themselves, they loose their classification as standard. I say that Linux is the standard because it is so consistent, and because about everyone wants to migrate to Linux, not to Microsoft.

Fact is Linux won't get popular until more people think of it as standard instead of "weird" or "new"... (words managers tend to hate). So call it the standard like it is.

I can almost see them not wanting to integrate Aqua into another "theme" But into other applications, such as Mozilla is totally rediculous. It's like if you patented a car which used a motor that you didn't create, you could sue someone for making a motorcycle wich used the same motor. Though Apple was the first to use this Theme, it's useless without a application, or GUI to put it in, Just as a Motor is useless without a car or a motorcycle.

Athlon MP 1.2ghz will only run you about $50 more than a regular one, and the MP seems to be more overclockable. Mostly we need cheaper dual processor motherboards for a really good Athlon system.
