  1. The ultimate cover for a botnet? on Conficker Worm Strike Reports Start Rolling In · · Score: 1

Perhaps the Conficker author figured the best time to strike would be on April fool's since nobody could tell the real stories from the prank ones. Yep, the results of the virus are stealthed further by a stupid holiday.

9 years ago, a great virus strike date would have been on Y2K, provided the assumption the infected computers wouldn't fail naturally from a Y2K flaw. "nah it's not a virus infection, it's just y2k all sorts of weird stuff is going on."

Just like how Christmas is a great time to rob banks dressed like Santa Claus. Plenty of decoys running around.

  2. Re:Implications on American Airlines To Offer Wi-Fi In Planes · · Score: 1

They do hock wares on flights. Many flights I've been on, flight attendants come by with carts selling overpriced fragrances, etc for duty-free shopping(IIRC). I always thought it was a huge waste of space & weight on a flight. I don't feel like shopping for perfumes, etc when I'm in the air. But then again, this is the same industry that has 2000 "no smoking" lighted signs, despite not being able to smoke on flights for some time, and getting reminded over the PA.

I'd rather see that energy for those no-smoking signs be used for laptop power outlets for coach.

FYI the 2 minute delays was the "slow down cowboy" period for posting a successive message.

And it was easily the stupidest feature of the slashcode ever incorporated. For legit users(ie non-trolls) it punished fast readers & fast typists. I utterly despised that feature. It's like a reverse dead man switch(which dead man switches are all over the place on the web).

  6. Yeah but... on Universal Remote's Days Are Numbered · · Score: 2, Insightful

I don't remember having to sign a contract, nor pay a monthly fee to use a universal remote,or better yet a "learning" remote. Those lists of manufacturers + models for your TV set/stereo/etc always seem to list all the models in the world..except the one you bought. Somehow I got lucky with my Advent home entertainment center, where I can use my Comcast remote to move up/down the volume. Felt a small sense of accomplishment since now I can now control everything with that remote, save for the video game consoles + VCR.

When I did tech support at an ISP, if we found out a user had a virus infection, we had to basically stop everything and tell them to "seek professional help". Worded wrongly, it sounds like we were telling the customer they needed to go to the funny farm. Sadly, some of them did need to.

Netbooks are small on the x and y axis. The Air is small on the z axis. Many of these netbooks are made by regular plain-jane PC makers, and are able to get the price down. Apple is not plain-jame, and the Air sells for quite a bit more.

To me, the Air is just a laptop that happens to be the thinnest. Just not on the wallet.

  15. Re:Authenticity on The Deceptive Perfection of Auto-Tune · · Score: 2, Insightful

There is some truth to this. I know of plenty of bands that didn't have much money & they had to rely on their own creativity(lyrics, etc) without any extra dough from the record company. The result is their best music. once they get popular, the record company throws horn sections, a popular producer, etc, and it sounds bland and over-produced. ANY new wave band that gets a horn section that never had one before is a guaranteed failure. Devo's "Oh No! It's Devo!" screamed "we're trying to finish out our contract obligations" and was easily their worst.

  16. HP's updater on Google Earth 5.0 Silently Changes Update Policy · · Score: 4, Insightful

HP is yet another one of those companies that insists on a background process to update printer drivers, etc. I realized one of the last updates fixed a security flaw. I think my next move will be to uninstall the updater altogether, and thus not have to worry about security holes in a freakin' updater.

It used to be every software house insisted on a systray icon, even though it didn't need it.
Now the latest trend are background "updater" processes, even for stuff that doesn't need it(Adobe reader, etc).

Typically there's no indicators of it being installed, and trying to uninstall it is a mystery.

This needs to change. Identify it as malware or something. Anything.
