And.... another point being.... that people dont realize a lot of music doesnt fall under the RIAA's grasp....
I am a techno DJ.... I spin trance in clubs, and hardhouse for parties and clubs sometimes... and the majority of my music is released either A) underground or B) with the full knowledge of the label that it is being pressed for public use and is generally encouraged to do so.
Go into any record store (vinyl catering to DJs, not CD store..) and you will find bins of LPs with white sleeves and white labels... penned on some track name or genre or play speed (33/45)..
The RIAA has *NO* say about how this music is played as its not under their domain!
So, to make my point, I think its perfectly fair and common to spin tracks in such a manner without even dealing with the beforementioned copyright/licensing/royalties/CARP shit..... Thats basically implied upon purchase of the record.
I have a strong suspicion, that lack of maintenance is not the primary danger that the network would face, but rather the fact that if anyone chooses to own the network up, or do some *experimental routing* that there is nothing that would be done about it!
Don't you mean, "In a shock announcement in reply to Sony's announcement Microsoft said they would be giving away a free X-Box with each copy of Windows XP Gaming Edition, the bundle value priced at $399.95."
This is a paragraph that fascinated me from the article --
"In the near term, the world could divide up into three kinds of humans: the Enhanced, who embrace these opportunities, the Naturals, who have the technology available but who, like today's vegetarians, choose not to indulge for moral or aesthetic reasons, and the Rest -- those who lag behind, envying or despising these ever-increasing choices. Especially if the Enhanced can easily be recognized because of the way they look, or what they can do, this is a recipe for conflict that would make racial differences quaintly obsolete."
What is so scary about that is how true it is.
I think that quite easily it could become a status symbol, somewhere between wearing expensive clothing and having tattoos..
Have any of you played the roleplaying game "Shadowrun"? Same principle.
If we think rascism is bad now, just wait until we can create even new ways of grouping people.
To me this seems a bit awkward.... At least when using whole systems and network segments for firewalling, its kept at a simple and low level.
For this, though it (theoretically) should support much finer firewalling rules based per client and be easier to do such, I'd really have to look at the implementation of the server software to determine if i would like it or not...
For example, what happens if the policy manager server goes down? does the software support redundancy? Will the entire network end up a mess without the server to command each cards filtering and packet routing? or do the cards hold that information until next updated?
Id like to read some deeper information on this system.
"A parent cannot, and should not, be around their child 100% of the time. There should be times when the child can be with their friends without parental supervision."
My only thought at this point is, who should set the rules on what is acceptable and unacceptable for a developing child to see? I'm not talking about ages 8-12 or whatever.. but mid to late teens... are growing constantly at that age...
Sometimes, letting them discover some parts of the real world is necessary. You and I both know what a gun can do, and I think it can sometimes backfire keeping a devloping teen locked away from being able to experience certain elements of the real world.
Surely, a parent would tell their children what is right, and what is wrong. So, after the child was raised properly with the knowledge of right and wrong, if they desire to go learn of the *real world* i dont think there should be a magic cut off at 17-18 when they are then declared arbitrarily to be "mature enough" to be exposed to it all at once.
I hate seeing when a judge feels he has to play daddy for the civilians..... Guess what? The children under 17 already HAVE parents, and its THEIR jobs to see to the monitoring of their video games and television and reading habits. If the child *didn't* have parents to watch over them, i can assure you that most likely the child is seeing far worse things in their life than GTA3.
Yes, our government is supposed to protect us, its citizens.. But everyone i talk to agrees with me that micromanagement in a corporate environment sucks, isnt this just micromanagement from the government into a family unit?
I'd drop the e11 ($9.79) just to be able to play with a pdp-1 alone! Something about running it virtually in memory space ( http://simh.trailing-edge.com/ ) is just not as appealing as being able to have the opportunity (for the first time in my young life fascinates me. (I am only 20 and did not have the ability to play with this growing up)
From the first link.. "Kempelen's contraption was, of course, a hoax. It would have been impossible to build a genuine mechanical chess player using 18th-century clockwork technology."
What is sad to me, is that with the progression of 20th-century computers, and digital watches where even an analouge-faced watch is controlled by quartz crystal and battery, it seems as though the *art* of clockwork has been forgotton....
"ATI AIW.... the digital vcr software plain sucks. "
I disagree! I liked the TV Program that came with the card... it was fast and easy to use, and to begin recording it was just one click...
Though, i did pre-configure it to NOT use it's own digital-vcr format video, and instead the mpeg1 has worked very well for me so far.
It't not as slick and fast and easy as a componant-level TiVo, but just as a feature written on a side of a box of a 3d card I don't think its that bad at all!
I don't see how this is a new revelation... I own an ATI All in Wonder Radeon and it came pre-bundled with digital VCR software in the TV viewer, which would allow one to record from live tv or from a composite/s-video input. It also has the ability to pause live tv and on and on, full screen guide, etc...
Does the passport == hotmail address? or msn email?
Does it become a legal address?
I can just see it now... one passport is assigned to each U.S. citizen, to provide a single email address through microsoft that not only will have possibly one's bills, and tax information, and any normal legal correspondance but also a single point of spam with very poor filtering options.
I'd love to see how they implement it... Hotmail?
"We're sorry your inbox is full (4,231 messages) Please upgrade to MS Premium E-Mail service"
Frankly, i dont see this as a "disturbing trend"...
I see it as the continuation of marketing strategies employed since television existed....
How many of you remember Lucky Charms or Tony the Tiger telling you how GGGrrrrreat!! his cereal was, or Ronald McDonald telling you how fantastic a happy meal was from McDonald's.
Wether its on the television or on the web, it's the same principle at work, IMHO.
I own the Kyocera SmartPhone palm-integraded cell phone, and i must say, there is a lot of room for growth in this field.
Personally, as much as the majority of slashdotters dislike/hate/despise MS, i think from their screen shots at least, that their mobile phone OS appears to be MUCH more intuitive than the palm os hacked for a cell phone like the kyocera...
The only other thing I wonder about is the stability... because the smartphone crashes often losing all data and applications, if the MS phone OS could be stable and as functional as it looks, I wouldn't hesitate to give it a try.
Dont get me wrong, the Kyocera is a nice phone, but its a 1st generation product, and as expected there will always be bugs and glitches. Im just excited to see progress being made by anyone which appears to be moving in the right direction, even if it is from Microsoft.
just think how much space 64mb is to an apple ][e.... no more flipping disks!
true the technology of the host machine is slightly outdated but hell.... you could probably fit one's entire software collection onto a single card, and not have to worry about changing a disk. program the flash and just pop it in, run whatever you like.....
my question is , is there an easy way to access the filesystem other than on an apple?
Its awesome to be able to recieve Radio-1 With better quality, the stream running 64kbps on Ogg sounds noticibly better than the old streams i used to listen to...great to put on at a party in the background a radio 1 essential mix....:)
only one question... How would one save the files after broadcast? (i.e. to save the essential mix broadcasts?)
[obligatory SP fan comment]
is there.... such.... a thing.... as... too much South Park???

Do we get "My Name Is" Badges like on the meetup site?
;)
And.... I wonder how many people will be named "Anonymous Coward"
Sorry, it goes without saying, but it nonetheless had to be said.

Hacker paradise!
Just take a moment and think about what this would feel like if you are like me, and wear disposable contact lenses. Eek!

"Ignatiev said the new technology is about 1,000 times faster than flash, which is nonmechanical and currently the speediest memory on the market. "
since when has Flash memory been the speediest memory on the market?
That seems to be an obscene comparison!
Ballmer said if the states should prevail with their demands, the decision would serve the interests of neither computer manufacturers nor users.
Thank goodness for us that Microsoft includes IE with the OS!
Are you being served?

In my opinion, some times a single person without the red-tape of a corporate environment can get a lot more done...
Does Be have any assests or $ anymore?
What does Be have to gain from this, this late into their corporate demise/OS trip into obscurity?
So, do we get to watch the marriage on streaming video, maybe get an ogg vorbis stream of the dj's sets at the afterparty?????
