  1. Re:Please learn the correct plural form...... on When Brains Meet Computer Brawn · · Score: 2

Everyone knows 'meece' is the plural of 'mouse'.

But then I am trying very hard to persuade the english-speaking world that 'jamp' and 'glid' are the past tense of 'jump' and 'glide' so maybe I am not the best person to argue semantics and grammar with.

  2. Re:Offtopic but... on Economy of Errors · · Score: 2

LOL:-) Sometimes the oneliners are the funniest!

  3. Re:Temple of Worship on Home Entertainment PC Mod · · Score: 2

Seems a reasonable comment. Luckily, to avoid nerddom, and show myself as a true geek, I also snowboard, windsurf, bungee jump, cliff-dive and play very loud guitar;-)

But enough of my yakkin'. On with the show.

  4. Re:Temple of Worship on Home Entertainment PC Mod · · Score: 2

    >>And the man who buys his first DVD player knows he is someone.

Well, I still don't have a DVD player but I have installed pacman on my car stereo along with a hacked up init, telnetd, httpd and ftpd.

    Am I someone???

  5. The all time best Tetris!!! on Seventeen Years of Tetris · · Score: 2

Tetanus On Drugs. It will do your head in! Just when you think it is letting you relax, the spins and the fuzzies come back in, and then the zoom snaps into overdrive.

    BBBbaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!

  6. I second that! on Video Games in Gym Class - DDR 101? · · Score: 2

Okay, usually it's a game best played after half a bottle of Jack Daniels:-) but on the harder levels you are left sweating and panting by the end.

Of course, it is more an upper body workout - although your glutes get hit a bit when lunging for the low ones.

  7. Re:ogg? on Slashback: Swiftness, Ender's, Streams · · Score: 2

I have never ever heard anyone refer to lego bricks as anything other than lego bricks or lego pieces. Calling them legos just sounds odd - like calling all the various meccano pieces meccanos.

And although I talk about mp3 files a lot, I have never been tempted to call them mp3's. Usually I call them songs, tracks, mp3 files or music files. Iff I used Ogg Vorbis more I would probably call them songs, tracks, vorbis files, ogg files (although that could be confusing when Ogg Tarkin gets developed) or music files.

Null issue - anyone not trying to be lazy in speech or in type will be fine with this.

  8. What nonsense on Cat Meows Have Evolved Because of Humans · · Score: 2

All the cat's I have ever seen (except one deaf, stupid albino cat that lived next door for a while) have meowed at other cats and some other animals. They even use recognisable meows so you can tell what their issues are (you know, the "That's my space" meow, the "I will hurt you" meow, and the "I need some pettin' and a lovin' on my rain soaked hide" meow)

  9. Why everyone should have an empeg (riocar) on Music Meets Steganography · · Score: 2

Some points - as others have mentioned, mp3 encoding does not get rid of the face - it is still spooky.

And one of the standard visualisation effects on the empeg shows it beautifully.

What's even weirder is it doesn't sound too nasty, musically. Every time I've tried to draw pics in the waveform it's sounded harsh and metallic.

  11. Re:Comet Hunter on Comet Hunting For The Masses · · Score: 3, Funny

What's a comet shower? I've seen meteor showers, and I've seen comets but I don't think I know this one.

Cool concept though - like 40 comets in a pack (or herd, or school maybe) orbiting together.

  12. Why Europe didn't suffer the slump as badly on Stallman on Software Patents · · Score: 2

I think a major part of this is because it wasn't one of our major landmarks/corporate buildings/status symbols which was hit.

Also, our economy has pretty strong links with the US (as the US is a pretty big market) but there is much more outside the US than inside, so basically we'll get some impact from US issues, but barring worldwide economic meltdown we're mostly fine:)

  13. The freeware versions miss out something on Network Associates Gives Up Search for PGP Buyer · · Score: 2

For a corporate of enterprise environment you NEED the ADK that the NAI corporate version comes with. At home we can all use the free versions, and in fact I do, but it is not even a remote contender for most of my clients with 50000+ employees.

NAI dropping this is going to seriously shaft them! There are some alternatives, but the transition is going to be expensive. Even the change of user licenses will cost over 1 Million pounds for a couple of my clients.

I'm astonished. I use google for generic searches, but any time I need a specific answer, google is the one I definitely would not use, as it never returns the link I want in the first 3 pages.

So I have a list of twenty-something search engines I use for specific purposes as they all have their sweet spot.

    Here are my top 7:

    ask.com
    altavista.com
    findlaw.com
    lycos.com
    metacrawler.com
    alexa.com
    alltheweb.com
    etc etc

  16. Security on Email And Cell Phone In One From RIM · · Score: 2

My main problem with the Blackberry is security. The PKI is badly formed, and in fact two RIM engineers could not explain the method used to exchange keys. In examining the protocols, it looks like some of it is in plain text!!

Out of the 5 security criteria a client of mine looked for, Blackberry only passed 1 so it was discarded as a choice.

Depends how paranoid you are, though, and this only applies to the email side. (For Info - the winner came out to be iPaq with SecuRemote)

  17. Re:Well, it's here already (slightly OT) on What About IPv6? How Long Until Widespread Deployment? · · Score: 2

It gets even more fun when using SQLnet and NBT authentication etc if the two merged organisations each use a significant part of the 10.0.0.0/8 space and aren't prepared to DHCP everything.

Believe me the NAT rules are a joy to behold (as long as someone else is supporting them) and usually means having to use other (non-approved) class A ranges as transition addresses.

  18. Re:T.A. on What's the Worst Acronym You've Ever Heard? · · Score: 2

T.A. - Territorial Army, or the weekend soldier reserve types. Okay, it isn't as funny as tits'n'ass, but it's the meaning most folks in the UK will think of first.

  19. Shooting down missiles on USAF Readies Laser of Death · · Score: 2

Okay, think of it this way: is it easier to reflect sunlight using a mirror onto a moving target, use a rifle or pilot a radio controlled aircraft to that target?

If the target is moving fast and erratically, the mirror is the easiest option as the beam focus can move much faster than a bullet or aircraft.

Now the only problems are power and dissipation, and it sounds like they've been licked.

    Cool!

  20. Honest men have nothing to hide? on Self-Shredding E-Mail · · Score: 2

Erm, how about your latest, not yet patented invention?
Or salary details? Or pretty much anything sensitive?

Admittedly you'd be best off not sending these bits of information, but if you have to then you'd best protect it.

On the other hand I for one can see no possible way a self shred system can work. Once you have information, it's yours. The original may be wiped, but you can use a screenshot, saved copy, hexeditor, memory dump etc etc

I can pay someone £100 quid to replace all my spark plugs, distributer, oil etc in an hour, but it would cost me maybe 3 times that in time wasted if I did it. So I don't bother
