Well, In fact, I was really more joking than anything.. I do get the fact that 'yes, I am fully aware that not every Apple post is a conspiracy' etc etc.. It was more the fact that budgetlinuxcds's was linked to two or more times in the article. I suppose if a selection was given then people could not actually come to the conclusion that people are paying for links.. (which you have to admit is not a bad idea... the current company I work for would 'probably' pay you $400 to link a story on us, I mean, crap it will always bring a flood of people, albeit not all are interested in purchasing anything.) So, to respond in full, I am fully aware it is not an ad, it would be a shame to see you guys go that way but in reality if you could get away with it, it could be rather lucrative, but at the possible cost of readership.. Sorry if I offended with my post, I doubt I did, but my apologies anyway. I've been a reader for years now, and slashdot is one of the few actual communities on the net that is functional and keeps itself in check (however I would personally change the moderation system to something that is not a -2 to 5 point system, tha tis just too limiting).. so my main issue with the post is link to cheapbytes along with budgetlinuxcds and you will probably not have people over-speculation what the motives are.
I am sure packetengines (http://www.scyld.com/network/yellowfin.html) is all over this. These guys had gigabit routers four years ago when I was helping to set up the AFN (ashlandfiber.com)
Cool to see.. mo'faster is mo'betta

Hrm.. that might be a new marketing angle from slashdot..
News for nerds, stuff that people paid 'us' for 'you' to look at.
Yea, a lot our techs here are getting new apples.. In particular some of our windows guys who have been hounded by us linux users for a long time (can't resist taking a jab at a guy who gets a new worm every other week) are going mac. Looking around I see several new mac laptops in the office.
I think that whole deal with this crap about he slideware, as you call it, is more than likely some investor strategy to make a quick buck.. sort of like what those sco monkeys are doing.. but that is whole different can of worms..
wow.. that is some serious vaporware.. I have seen vapor'ish-ware.. but not full blown diaphanous-pipe-dream-vapor-ware..
I think this calls for a new definition.. Perhaps "dream-ware" or "never-ware".. maybe "talk-ware"
And what is up with all the Apple news today?

Me: Are you !^%$ kidding me?
Boss: Nope.

Boss: Because, we built the company based on this stuff, what are we going to do, change all that code?
Me:.... umm.. YEA...
of course.. the that company is not comprised of that guy a couple other people because the licensing (among other things) killed the company. it was at 50 people.

Most companies, if they can, will use 100% open source to create totally closed-source solutions. The exceptions being the 100% microsoft shops, and those guy have all their profits eaten up by licenses, and "of course" they won't open source anything because the licenses restrict that they "can't". (I at one time worked as an ASP programmer and am happily a three-years now PHP programmer).
The old point was, pay for a product, you pay for support; however, this is not true anymore (just try and call MS technical support without having a license you pay $1000 for).. But something like MySQL or PHP you can easily and quickly get help in any forum..
But I digress.. the point is, most "smart" companies do this to keep costs down.
even though, I as many of you, find the site eye-clawing.. he does have a point about it. I used to surf about trying to find the "worst" game reviews because they were too funny.. (i.e. PC Gamers review of ExtremePaintball3D, the lowest rating ever given to a game, or a review of RailroadMaster 3d from a site that is no longer around.).. but that was because the reviews in that format, fit the game.. But it seemed the "good" reviews were lacking. If someone could come out with a new format for rating games, something fresh and not hammered into the ground (pro/con lists) it might actually help the industry.

Just some ideas.
Wow, that list of Analysis Tools used for tracking this down had a bunch that I was not familiar with.
RRGrapher, FlowScan and Cflow being ones I have never messed with..
Cool.. new tools to play with!
I hear tripping over the wires.. (pulling them all over the place) then suing the company helps to get wiring messes fixed right up in jiffy.

then I stand corrected.
sf cvs must have hiccuped when I went to look.
it reads more like some strange marketing propaganda than anything.
..
That project has no releases, has nothing in cvs and very scant details on what it even "is"
There are many many projects out there with so much more info available, why is this one that has not released anything getting so much attention?
they found out that the monopoly money we were all sending to them is not worth anything :)
Well, this should go down as one of the most obivous scams that has happened on wall street since enron and martha..

companies will want 80 years to retire.
projects that take 20 years to complete.
at least I will have time to finish this project I am working on now that seems to be taking until I will be 80..
