Exactly!! You can build some kick-arse apps with.NET. You can also build some kick-arse apps with JAVA. But basing an OS on either of these on technologies is foolish! Sure JavaOS was a good idea 4 years ago but it's never going to do the job C/C++ and the same goes for.NET and Miscrsoft knows that.
It is the responsibility of the parents to monitor what their children are searching for on the internet. The govt stepping in and saying it's in the name of freedon and justic is a bunch of hooey. The real problem that I have is with this Administration pushing our soceity to Orwell's 1984 all in the name of freedom.
Why doesn't Misrosoft buy out Net-Nanny (or whoever) and bundle it in with Windows? It's not like the gov't will stop them (damn IE & MediaPlayer).
The oter problem is the quality of search results in gereral. Tell me when you search on Google how far pas page 5 of results do you go? Once you get past there it's all down hill with spam sites, redirescts, porn, crack sites and other useless junk.

Who would ask: "What would the esteemed Slashdot readers think of shifting all these machines to a Linux distro (probably Ubuntu)."?
This Ask Slashdot item just made every Linux geeks day.
Every Linux Geek: "Oh look someone wants me to tell them why they should switch to Linux over Windows. Now I can tell the world about my faild attempts to implement Windows and how I switched to Linux and became a hero in my own mind!"
Inovation will slow down because Developers (of all sorts) will no longer search the internet for hours looking up cool hacks or answers for their coding problems. Nor will they download EVERY code example zip package. All of the Code Sharing site will dry up. No more/. posts. No more Sourceforge or Freshmeat downloads. No more p0rn. No more Counter-Strike for 5 hours at a time. No one will EVEY down load an iso of the letaest *nix build. No one will EVER update Windows or grab the lates Virus updates. Microsoft' MSDN downlod subscriptions will die. Email will die. All of the online Music services will die. Not only do I have to pay iTunes for this song but I am getting charged but my ISP for downloading/streaming it.
I don't fucking think so.
My drunken brother said to me ae he handed me they keys "Go get my gun."
Once a company finnaly hire someone they then have to let them in on the company secret like:
"We just need to mock up a demo app so the customer will give us money. Then we'll go back and do it right."
"If we don't get this already failing project out the door by the end of the next quarter the Board is going to cut us off."
"Bob, the sales guy told the client that the app will not only wash the dishes but it can also clean the floor as well."
"Yeha, about the spec. Well we've been so behind that we never got to writing a spec."
Once the new employee is let in on the secret 1 of 2 things will happen. If you got the perfect guy with everything you could ever want, he will leave ASAP or once he finds the perfect company.
It you got the guy who could grow into the position then you've got youself a new scapgoat.
I discovered a Van Heusen outlet store in Kittery, Maine and for a $50 an outfit (Trousers and a Shirt) the ladies will be impressed as will your current employer.
Most of the cloths mix and match well. You could pick out a shirt, trousers and a tie blind-folded and you will still look better than waring jeans and a t-shirt.
The cloths look good most are wrinkle-free and/or stain resistant and the girls that work in the shops are hot.
On Friday throw on some jeans and a white button-down and go to the local pub for a beer. The chicks will dig you and if you play your cards right (by not talking about computers, porn, Magic The Gathering, D&D, or you cool bed-room in your parents garage) you might get laid.
Three years ago (2001), while I was working in London at a Medical Software Development firm, I recomend that the company move from ColdFusion to J2EE for scaleability and I wanted to work with Java. But the company, on Micro$ofts urging, went to.NET. Then a year later(2002) after attending LinuxExpo in London, I presented to the IT Director a plan to build a desktop OS for the National Health Services using Linux. But the Brits do not like chage and they really do not like Americans recomending change. Also around that time Sun approchad the same Director and showed him their first run at linux the SunLinuxOS. But the business reality was "We are an Microsoft shop and we cannot afford to change direction." Which was fair enough.
Now just a few weeks ago there was a story about how Sun scored a deal with the NHS for $9 Billion dollars or 5 Billion (GBP).

Just because someone uses VS.NET and likes it does not mean they are a weak developer. What it means is they can get twice as much done.
For instance when you creat a VS Solution you create a top-level package which will contain parts of the application in proper n-tier fashion.
You then right-click (for those of you that don't know you click on the right-side-button on that mouse thinghy next to your keyboard) on the Solution and select Add > New Project and then select from a Visual List of Icons (graph representatiosn for those of you too cool for a GUI) and select Windows or Class Library or ASP.NET Web Service and so on. You can even choose the language. (Sorry, Binary is not a choice for you MIT lads)
When I am all set up meaning I have created a nice little class library and web serice I can jsut type in the class name and what pops up a list of methods and properties that I my self created.
So tell me does Textpad do that?
My wife said to me today, "One man's trash is another man's treasure." I think that sums up our diffrences.

I am just interested to see what kind of pattern there is.
If BestBuy is so annoyed with the rebate thing then why is it EVERY Sunday I get a flyer with pages and pages of products with *"Price after Rebates" attached to the price?!!!
Of course I am going to buy it if it's on sale. That's what sales are for!!
Why? Well, for starters the rebates, the rewards programa and the warranty policy.
For instance I purchased a laptop for $1300 once I took the 10 minutes out of my day to fill in,copy the rebtes and send the rebates, I paid $1000. With the cash I would be saving from the rebate I purchased the warranty. The clerk said "if you bring it in 3 times we'll replace it". OK.
I purchased my washer/dryer intrest free for 18 months with $100 3 year warranty.
So far in 7 months I have received $500+ in rebates.
$150 120GB HD - Free after rebates and reward zone points from the washer/dryer.
When I go to Best Buy I alreadr know what I am going to buy but for fun I'll let the sales clerk think I have't a clue and want the "most expensive because it's the best". Then I say thanks and go and purchase what I intended to buy.
So, I must be one of the customers that should be "fired".

Diablo II runs well
NWN runs ok if you turn everything down

I was a ColdFusion developer but 4 years ago I (the company) switched to .NET.
If you think that you can install VS.NET and just start draging-n-dropping a web site together and expect it to be good you are so wrong.
Oh and you think that out-of-the-box your development time will be cut in half.
Wrong. It's called a learning curve.
Oh and that's a damn shame that the company had to spend money on retraining their developers.
Bash this.
