Is this the new way to deal with duplicate articles? Repost highly moderated comments from the last article. Very interesting. At least it was two ACs who posted these two comments. If it was a reg user I'd hope they get torched.
/usr and/usr/local are entirely different things, and not the worry of users. they are also very intuitive./usr is standard system stuff,/usr/local is locally hacked stuff, so i can place 'my' hacked version of any program in/usr/local and override the system one (if i were the sysadmin).
Yes, that's the whole point of the article. Many people in CS are not interested in the Science part of it. They are interested in the coding/hacking part of it. He suggests that maybe CS should be broken into different areas.
What about these stupid adds that popup on the middle of the page obscuring your text? I haven't looked into them... are they JavaScript or DHTML or what? Mozilla doesn't help me with those unfortunately. JavaScript is useful enough for me not to want to turn it completely off.
Yes, there is very little demand. Slashdot is one of very few places where anyone knows what Ogg is. Joe Kazaa doesn't. It's also very processor intensive (need a FPU or very powerful integer processor).
Yeah, good point. I thought the analysis of all the points was fair and reasonable but the headlines were going over board and meant to be provocative. I guess thats a byproduct of a CNN society.
You can also get a 1-time (ever) hardware discount if you sign up for the Apple Student Developer program. It's hard to track down prices but I think they are very substantial, ie better than education.
Who own a Mac
AND Who own iPods
AND live in North America
Actually, live in the USA only. And you don't need an iPod, you can just play it in iTunes and stream it and everything. But having an iPod is certainly a more compelling reason to use it.
I never thought I would see someone say they were happy they got moved from coding to documentation and testing. I hope I can find someone like that to hire:)
Haha, my thoughts exactly. This guys isn't going to have any problems finding a job if he likes technical writing and is good at it. Documentation is a huge part of the project management process for software development.

Sorry, I can't get enough of that troll. It's too funny.
Yeah let's talk about something more interesting. Like when is 0.6 coming out?
Wasn't there one of these a while ago? June 8, 2000. Did that ever materialize?
Eh? Aren't there much larger margins on software than HW? After it's been developed, it's like 95% margin.
Because sometimes shit happens man!
Another crippling bombshell hit the already beleagured TiVo community when "quandrum" announced the TiVo is dying.
Or does the Fairplay DRM limit it?

Hehe. At least in my school, there are way more females in CS than in Engineering. Don't know if this universally holds or not.
Damn, you beat me too it. I was sure this post would gain instant karma!

It's been news for herds for as long as I've known it. That's just the nature of the beast.
Cute, but yeah it does.
You can get a ~60 KB one from the latest Kazaa Lite.

Negative, this is the type of thing BitTorrent was DESIGNED for.
Exactly. You put it better than me. The analysis was reasonable.

I was going to ask - is the SDRAM completely standard? Cnn you just buy PC133 SDRAM from Crucial and pop it in?

Yeah but what does it do?
