Studies have been done that show commenting helps coders write better code, especially when they comment beforehand. It's just like any profession, thinking out what you do before you do it helps you do it better. So while it might be bothersome for you it helps them. Try it.

Alls I am saying is this is not much of a "jump." The real WOW is what we can do when we understand what is going on. We can make a motorcycle now, sure, go ahead. But we could be a shitload better of one if we understand the basic underlying concepts of what is going on between computer and human.

Right now we have a Model-T. All we do is copy that design and end up with crappy results. I am a mac user, only becuase it is the _least_ annoying interface. I was a died in the wool blead green, yellow, orange, red, purple, and blue IN THAT ORDER blood!

The humane interface is a real wow. This is merely a toy in comarison to what can be done. When one sets out to create a new server or OS they know what they are doing. The design has been thought out and been done. As Linus has said the real challenge is the "desktop." What he means to say is the interface. What he, KDE, Gnome, Apple, MS, or most others don't seem to understand is that it isn't a feature rush, it's understanding how it works.

Until interface designers turn into interface engineers we will continue to think that basic force input is exiting. The really exiting this isn't the newest sudo 3d paradim or new input method, it's understanding and expanding how we interact with those things.

  7. Complete Crap on PowerBook As A New Kind Of Human Interface Device · · Score: -1, Offtopic

3d interfaces, multi-modal desktops, etc, All worthless. Until one understands the fundamental way that our brain functions with the computer all this is just toys. We need to radically change our understanding of interfaces. While this is "cool" it's mostly useless.

It would be better if in all applications they reduced the time and complexity to complete each task. This is why using my highly customized joystick I can rape most anyone in Unreal, even though I only had a week or so experiance. This is why I am totally addicted to the Humane Environment, try it for a week and you will understand why the pain of no spell check and c/ping everything in and out into a regular editor makes is worth it.

Want something radical? It's not standard force input devices but not having any notion of applications in an OS. Never turning off or on a computer. No crashes, no worries.

Put that on the desktop, and people will move to linux in droves!

Not to say that alternatives to the mouse and keyboard combo couldn't be usefull. Its anogolous to designing cars without an understanding of physics, and deciding that a motorcycle would be cool. We need to fix the junkers we have before expanding.

This is totally impossible. Utah has a track record of passing laws and fogetting about the constitution. They "traded" a public section around the temple to the LDS church. The church put in all kinds of money to revamp the area and in exchange no one could swear or talk shit about the church in the area. It was deemed a violation of the constitution and everyone was pissed that they had put in all this money and have a silly little thing called "rights" come in and skrew everything up.

The US (or some state) already tried to pass a law that required a warning that anything not suitible for children on the internet required a warning. The ACLU stopped it quick.

This is just some conservative trying to get more votes by proposing an impossibly unconstitutional law. Like when they tried to pass the law that it was okay to display the 10 commandments in schools. They know it is totally illegal, but gets them a lot of press and cred with their voters.

  16. Helps migration on Open Source on Windows - Boon or Bane for Linux? · · Score: 1

That is ridiculous. Making KDE run on windows doesn't solve the two big things that Linux has over Windows: a technologically better kernel and it is free. If a corporation can build applications on KDE for both platforms then its worker bees that use _only_ that application can use just Linux, while everyone else has Windows and KDE. It will get Linux more exposure in the managerial mind and more applications will be built for Linux.

I have been inventorying government sites, their computers, what's on them, how do they use them, etc. A lot of them run Windows with terminal emulation to IBM machines. Some are just thin clients. It's cheaper to have that thin client, it hasn't been replaced in 10 years. If that persons job is only working with the IBM AS/400 they have no need for a Windows machine. No reason to pay a grand for a new computer.

Even better here is that if that person starts to do other things they can now just use Linux. As long as they are doing just word processing, email, and the like. With KDE being so well associated with Linux it has a lot better chance of _being_ an option.

That's bullshit. A keyboard and mouse are a pain in the ass and quite slow. One just has to look at this cognitibly to see that one can do more things with a joystick faster. I have been playing with a joystick and quickly beat the shit out of all my friends who had played for years. Only problem is my wrists, they are carpel tunnel shit and after about three days of gaming they are gone.

And yeah, auto aim blows. But consoles you can play without worrying if your downloads need to be shut down, parties are about 10x easier, the time for power up to play is tremendously smaller, and they are cheaper. When the Xbox came out it was quite impressive.
