Yes. I have a 9700 which I plan to replace with an iPhone at my next upgrade. This is my second 9700, as the first one ate batteries and had to be replaced. This current one's 30 day warranty is out, so if it fails I will replace with an iPhone immediately. I hope it lasts until the iPhone 5 comes out though.

To a point this could be true. However, if you are customer facing (and specifically are required to be onsite at customer sites frequently) it would be difficult to be out-sourced. I have been fortunate to officially office from home my almost 9 years at my current company - and I've been customer facing (requiring lots of travel and onsite) the whole time.

If you read TFA you will see that cutting consumption is not necessary. His goal is not to go totally solar, but to "feel good" and supplement his bill. I see no reason why he should cut consumption. The system is working as designed and should deliver its payoff in the allotted time. His job requires high energy consumption and he now has a multi-fuel power source (grid plus his solar).

One way to keep those applications around is to instantiate them on a virtual machine, and archive that VM along with the data and the executable for the VM. At least for the moment - VMware VMs are runnable by later versions of the product. This would of course be something to keep track of going forward.
