The one problem with hybird cars that would prevent me from buying one (besides hte fact that i'm a poor college student =)) is I wonder what effect the near constant starting of the motor has on the life of the engine. It bugs me. I just can't believe that a engine would last as long being started 40-50 times a day normal driving.
The wife of Enron's CEO was on 60 minutes (i think) and complained about how poor they where after Enron's collapse. IRS/Bank documents showed the two had nearly 50 million dollars.
Well they could do what these people did. In all honesty, setting up an internet CO-Op seems to be the most likely way for people in rural areas to get broadband.
Remember only because of the Rural Electrification act of 1923(?) did rural areas get electrict/telephones. A report from the DOE (deparment of Energy) that I read (can't find the link, of course) said that the total cost of wiring all those places took around 30-40 years to pay off. The telecoms make very, very little from rural areas, and in many cases lose money, so they tend to not care about them.
So either build your own or press the gov't to make some sort of law requiring the telco's to provide broadband.
Absolutely ridiculous. All these telecoms going bye-bye. Where the fsck did the people who ran these business get their degrees? I mean, for god's sake, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that if your company is 2 billion in debt maybe you shouldn't pay like 50 million to liscense a stadium (titan's adelphia stadium). Or perhaps you shouldn't get those $100,000 sun boxen. Always a favourite of mine - listening to all this super expensive brand-new equipment these companies have. Ebay anyone?
It just boggles my mind that somehow these morons got put in charge of a company like this. Take starband - why in god's name would you ban something like P2P filesharing programs? These programs are like the #1 reason people (Especially younger people) want to get broadband - but you filter them out. Great business strategy. Gee, I wonder why you are going bankrupt?
It just pisses me off that these morons who ran the company will get to live off of 'only 50 million' like that b*tch from Enron while 1,000 or more employees will have to try and have to scrape together a living. Argggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I used to run a cs server and we had very strict policies towards cheaters - i.e. ip banned, logged, etc. Invariably this would piss them off and they would try to hack into the server. Since we where on a campus network we would promptly report them to the IS guys who would then deactivate their ports. Problem Solved. The problem is lazy admins who don't do anything OR the difficulty in proving somebody is cheating.
Also, I don't think game developers have taken security into account enough in their games. In the past cheating wasn't a real big deal - you could ruin the game for yourself but not for others. Now, you can ruin a perfectly good 20+ or 1 million+ (diablo 2) game by cheating. Simply put game programmers need to incorporate some type of security systems into their games to prevent this kind of thing.
The Way-Back Machine is beautiful for seeing what sites where like 'back-in the day.' I looked at some of the sites I used to code and cringe... It is also amusing to note that alot of the sites won't work with modern browsers due to IE/Mozilla specific tags. Ahh.. the good 'ol days.

But then, I consider the BSA a terrorist organization. Terror IS their weapon
Hold on there cowboy. I hate the BSA as much as the next person but they are *not* a terror organization. Saying so makes you sound remarkably like the talking heads on tv and the politicians who attach the 'terrorist' label to anything they don't like.
the BSA is an organization that uses fear and extortion to accomplish it's goals, remarkably similar to terrorism eh? The parallels stop there. The BSA accomplishes its goals within the law. Sure the law might be horribly flawed, but the BSA does work within it, and if they break the law they do pay.
What the BSA does not do is send suicide bombers, assasinations, bombs, planes, and violence to kill and murder innocent people.
Call them whatever you like; asspirates,jack-booted thugs,cum-guzzling gutter sluts,- whatever, but terrorists they are not.
Wouldn't this type of processor type carry a huge hit if like a JUMP command or something to interupt the pipeline was encountered? I remember hearing this was a big problem in Pentium chips with it's long pipeline stages - it would have to be worse in a system like this... unless the compiler/branch prediction is really, really good I suppose.
And while you're at it would someone kindly explain why 256bit would only double the efficiency over current (64bit) chips? SHould it quadruple? One last question, since the article was mighty skimpy on details, why doesn't Intel/Sun/Amd/etc make a processor > 64 bit?
I am assuming that their are a ton of technical challenges to overcome, as well as the fact that such chips probably couldn't run at very high clock speeds. Any other reasons?
Just a note on the origins of oil: THEY DIDNT COME FROM THE DINOSAURS. Argh, I get annoyed everytime I see this. Oil comes from decayed algae and plankton. These plants use a form of hydrocarbon to float to stay int he photic zone of the ocean. If the conditions are right, (tempature + pressure), oil or natural gas forms.
"feeds a growing black economy in which criminal networks use piracy to fund other activities such as drug dealing, arms trading, money laundering and terrorism."
I'm sure it happens - the simple fact is these organizations need money and will do whatever illegal activity is neccassary to fund their operations, or whatever can make them the most profit... but here is the sticking point. How much do you think these people realy make of of pirated software? MOst of the stuff I have seen sells for 4-5$. Not really a big deal when you consider other likely sorts of income - drug dealing (I believe a 1kg of cocaine fetches 100,000$ anymore) extoration, blackmail, etc. Can you see Tony Soprano talking about their new 'cd pirating scheme?' Consider the taliban/al qaeda (sp?). Most of the funding for those two organizations (besides legit taxes) occured from A.) Opium B.) Donations from wealthy businessmen - Oil Money. Never forget, the vast majority of funding for most middle eastearn terrorist groups is from oil. Remember that the next time you go to fill up the SUV.
This is probably just FUD. Most of the people doing this are people who are just trying ot earn a quick buck, but this doesn't preclude the possibility of it happening. Anymore it seems that you throw the word 'terrorist' into anything and you have a good chance of getting people to side with you.
You are right - for a small business it probably doesn't make all that much sense to use linux. But, consider if you had 500+ (or however many) stores. It would be much more reasonable then.
Look's like I'd better tell the g/f that I'll be incommunicado for a few weeks after this game comes out. And I had just got over my Civ III addiction too.
1.) Free. Really. Perhaps I should say cost-effective?
2.) Customizable. Completely, 100% customizable to your needs. You can modify whatever you want to make it your own.
3.) Can run on a old 486 if you want it to. This is a biggy for retail stores. Some of those cash register type thingies cost thousands a pop. Install linux on an old 486 which you can find in the dump for god's sake. The best part about it? You can probably go 5 years or so without ever having to worry about upgrading. I would even say 10 if you go with a pentium.
4.) Secure and Stable. Doesn't really need an explanation does it?
5.) Easy Network/Remote access admining. This is a big plus. At the restaurant I work for the software they use is a pain, and so is admining the machines. The cashiers tend to surf the internet, etc when they shoudl be working. You could eliminate these factors on a linux system
I think the really big thing for company's is the ability to completely customize the OS to fit their needs. Hire a couple dozen programmers and wham - your needs are taken care of for years to come. You don't have to worry about vendors, licensing costs, etc. Nice and Neat
In an ideal world they would build a new one.. but it would be impossible in todays climate. No new nuclear power plant has been built in the US since the 80's (I believe.. might be a little earlier/later). It causes too much of an uproar - NIMBY. Plus, you get wacky SUV driving soccer moms who complain about how much nuclear plants 'pollute.' Sigh.
In opera, at least, I can change my preferences to mimik IE 6.0 or 5.0. Try that if you have it. I thought there was something like this in mozilla, guess not. oh, you also can't d/l attachments with an 'incompatible' browser. Makes no sense - everything works fine when I set opera to indentify itself as MSIE 6.0 but... oh well.
I could go on-and-on about how retarded, backwards, non-standards compliant this is but... it's microsoft. Go Figure.
It's actually taken from greek philosphers, relating to the 'forms.' Can't remember if it was plato, socrates, or aristotle though..
Ok, that's really cool that the chip designers put 'easter eggs' on chips. I especially like these:
Tux On A chip!
The Enterprise
Stay puff marshmellow man
GodZilla!
Disclaimer The Wave of the future! Put your EULA on the chip.
Neat stuff.
