The old Atari Jaguar had an 18 button control pad. It was really cool, because with every game came a little sheet that you could slip over the controller that said what did what.

Regarding the issue of those underage wanting to go into the party: "and just because you're old enough to vote and kill, you're not old enough to enter a bar."
Perhaps this is a bit off-topic but I think it's a good time to bring it up.
Legal voting age is 18. Legal army age is 18. Legal drinking age in a good amount of states is 21. What the heck? You can vote for politicians, you can get yourself killed and die for your country, but you can't get legally inebriated?
Story time. Being the under-age-nerd-with-a-social-life self that I am, I decide that I want to go clubbing.
But boo-hoo, I'm not old enough. So I go to the only guy that I know who makes fake IDs, and ask for one. "Why," he asks, "you're wearing a Linux shirt. You're a geek. You guys don't go clubbing."
Pfffffft. Now I have a legitimate reason. The mozilla release party is only open to those 21 and older.
Something that I always think is really cool is Maximum PC's featured case mod of the month. They have a whole page dedicated to somebody's cool mod, how they did it, and link to where you can find the pieces.
1) "Necessity is the mother of invention" - nobody NEEDED a little shortcut for their domain names.
2) Hardly anyone KNEW about the RealNames thing. The ones who knew were the most tech savvy, and they could probably have just made an aliases file to have "linux" go to linux.com or something....
3) it wasn't widely-spread. only a handful of keywords worked.
I use mp3s to organize my music collection; I have hundreds of cds. It's much easier to just rip all my cds into mp3 or ogg format and listen to it like that.
But NOOO. Some warez kiddies who like to distribute music online have to ruin this convenience for all of us.
So I guess we got what was coming to us, even if I think that making the iMac freeze is waaaaaaay too harsh.
Let me begin by stating this is flamebait. I am being perfectly serious here...
Anyway, one of the comments (and probably others, as comments get repeated here an awful lot because Slashdot is so big) said that geeks watching it at home would not do the studios any harm. They would watch it 6 times in the theatre anyway!
Uh, no.
Piracy, at any level, is wrong. They would watch the movie in the theatre MORE if they didn't watch it at home, first. Watching it in the theatres: gives studios the money they have rightfully earned, allows broke movie-ticket rippers to earn extra money (possibly commission?) and keeps enterprising businesses going.
Now, I'm not trying to preach here. Well, maybe I am. But remember: just because most of the slashdotters here are involved with open source, doesn't mean that everything is! And that comment is NOT going out to everyone, just anyone who is defending piracy. I mean, geez. At least have the guts to admit you're wrong.
Since "office apps" are coming up, I want to point out a friendly issue to fellow linux lovers:
Linux is not totally mainstream yet, because:
A) No adobe photoshop yet. GIMP is inferior, don't even try.. B) StarOffice is very slow, and not 100% compatible with MSOffice. Microsoft word is still the preferred word processor and such.
I live right by a Church of Scientology- in fact, I pass by it every day on my way to school.
So every day I see the sign: free IQ test & analysis. Heh, sounds pretty cool. I go on. Enter the dungeon.
Have you ever played a game of Dungeons and Dragons? Like when you're about to do a really risky move and feel like wetting yourself? Well, even if you hadn't, that's how I felt.
Strange people inside. First asked for money, then asked for personal information. Then they tried to @%$% hypnotize me. Luckily, I bailed.
So, I have a poem for you all:
Y'all stay away from the darker side and if you go astray let the force be your guide
A downside of the Handspring visor is that it is not flash-upgrade compatible. (At least, the Visor Deluxe that I won, all models down, and presumably a few more)
So, most of the current visor users are stuck with Palm OS version 4.2 or something. Unfortunately, there are a few downsides to that particular version and bugs. And... we can't upgrade!
Now, if this upgrade is really to die for, we can be seeing Palm's sales go up and Handspring's go down. Or no?
I've been using Mozilla 9.x for some time now, on and off, and I can tell you it's extremely unstable. It crashes - all the time -. However, I running Windows.
Which brings me to my next point. "Use Mozilla! Internet Exploror is made by Micro$oft! 0p3n s0urc3 is l337." Um, no. I'd like to just remind everyone that even though a product may be made by an evil corporation, it can still be good. You needn't support crappier products just on principle.
DivX;)

Pros:
- open source
- videos can compress (send video footage to relatives over email, read the napsterization of TV post comments to see what I mean)
Cons:
- piracy of movies over net is encouraged, etc.
- being licensed by a big corporation might lead them to become anal on us.. ie, charging fees?
Ogg Vorbis
Pros: Good quality/compression
Cons: Not a standard
#1) Piracy and Warez
#2) People getting stuff that offends them. ie, goatse-ish
#3) A way for terrorists to exchange information without it being tracable.
What I'm really thinking about is #3. I know it may sound ridiculous, but I'd like to hear your thoughts on it.

What kind of country do we live in!

Heh.
I went to a lecture given by my local congresswoman, under the impression that there would be a forum at the end for our questions to be answered.
Sure enough, none of my technology-related questions were answered, nor brought up.
Be prepared for a slew of terrorism-related and patriotism-invoking questions, though.
Regardless of whether he was a script kiddie or he was somebody who totally understood what he was doing, like a guru, he should be punished.
Rules are rules. You break a rule, you break a rule.
Just a thought.
From the viewpoint of a newbie gamer geek, I'm sick of all these hardcore graphics cards with a million widgets on the control panel.
I'd like to have a simple interface and an explanation of what does what coupled with a high-performance graphics card.
Hence "weird drivers" shuns me away.
The reasons I signed up for high bandwith internet access are as follows:
... at the same rate
- always on
- flat rate
- I can use however much I want to
Hell, with restrictions such as these, it might even be cheaper to rent a movie than download it...
(no troll intended)
I concur with this guy, sorta, but not in the way he phrased it.
It's not over... it's just that the capacity to take one's invention to new levels is, well, diminished.
Once I heard someone say that "creativity is a process which stems from one source, not multiple ones."
Sure, others can add on, but the idea still originates from one person. And that person's role is still the same: to come up with good ideas.
Something that I always think is really cool is Maximum PC's featured case mod of the month. They have a whole page dedicated to somebody's cool mod, how they did it, and link to where you can find the pieces.
Check it out!
That's a non sequitor.
Their system REVOLVES around IE.
Actually, we'd probably see all of them on April Fools day.
=P
Uh? No.
The system was created to work for the general public. The general public uses Internet Explorer. Microsoft owns Internet Explorer.
-shrug-
Why RealNames failed:
1) "Necessity is the mother of invention" - nobody NEEDED a little shortcut for their domain names.
2) Hardly anyone KNEW about the RealNames thing. The ones who knew were the most tech savvy, and they could probably have just made an aliases file to have "linux" go to linux.com or something....
3) it wasn't widely-spread. only a handful of keywords worked.
4) costed WAY TOO MUCH!
I guess you wouldn't mind if I got the rights to the Linux RealName then, eh?
;)
Hey, CmdrTaco, how would you like to buy slashdot.cjb.net from me?
You'll be all over MSN!

I would want a 21" penis. Hmm, come to think of it, so would my girlfriend.
Awwwweeesome.
Now I can surf the 'net for ascii porn 1 character at a time at insane speed.
Can you feel the sarcasm? Pffft, what a useless feature.
