It seems to me that a few very loud people quite badly aren't going to shut up until Jobs give each and every single one of them their own free, customized mac.
You can't be serious, right? What a stupid thing to say.
I hope Apple gets grilled to toast for removing FireWire, because it was a stupid move. I hope they fess up by putting it back in the next revision. It seems like they did it just for product differential rather than because there wasn't enough room or needed to save a few bucks.
Things such as only having the illuminate keyboard on the higher-end model don't bother me as much as this, since if you really want it, you can still get it. But the only option to get FireWire now is to get a MacBook pro, which not only costs a lot more, but is also a lot bigger and heavier.
Why would it be an environment nightmare? Do you not think they will ever develop the battery technology to a point where it is environmentally and economically viable to recycle them?
Damn right. These kinds of stats are like racial profiling and such -- they are only useful if you have no better info to go on. They are unreliable in the real world. If you are trying to track down a serial killer, they may help you find the person you are after. If you are trying to use it to say something about or decide upon groups of people, you will probably end up making too many generalisations to be of any use.
It's not really a slippery slope because all telephone calls a logged in most countries, IIRC, even if they aren't recorded. So say what you like about it, and I think it's a bad thing, but please don't make us all look like idiots.
More CPU:s may actually not be that bad because you can spread the dissipated power over a larger area.
But that doesn't equate to less heat dissipated in total. While I'm sure such things influence the design of a cooling system, without any specifics, there is no reason to assume it's an advantage.
Well, cooling them down takes energy and creates heat, so depending on how much you can save in that area vs. the extra expended with the chips, it might end up being more efficient overall.
You do know that mechanics can also fail, right? From everything I've read on PPRuNe, Airbus is just as safe as Boeing, and it's only the uninformed people who don't really know what they are talking about who actually think that Airbus or Boeing are different enough in this area to justify not flying in one verse the other.
It's that kind of attitude which is why they are doing so much better than the average small web company. You really think that 10% is the easy part or that it doesn't make much of a difference to the user?
Pure theft. I know, I worked for the start-up that got put out of business.
Perhaps that might have held more weight if it hadn't been posted anonymously.
Besides, it hardly seems like a real idea to steal, unless you also think that Amazon's one-click patent should be upheld. Did he steal any code? Why didn't the original business succeed?
IMs don't have to be as distracting as meetings since you can choose when to give them your attention. Perhaps they are interrupting to you, or in your particular company, but that doesn't make it the case for everyone.
Considering how much effort 37signals put into often neglected areas in the web development industry, such as interface and usability, it's no surprise that many of the Slashdot crowd haven't heard of them before.
If you really think that, then I think you have missed what makes them so successful. They pay a lot of attention to the interface and usability of their products..
Several times I've found some interesting TV series and decided to watched a few episodes, only to have to endure the task of finding all the parts, which are never listed in any sort of order in the "Related videos" list for this type of use. And then there is the problem with the "QuickList" not clearing videos that you have removed from it, or occasionally not adding one, or forgetting some next time the page loads, forcing you to try and find the parts again.
...undercut by the latest line of cheap Chinese cars, which can be glossed up just as easily as their western counterparts.
They still seem to be trying to get the hang of this glossing. Even the Japanese have only more recently taken their aesthetics more seriously compared to European cars, and I think that's because nowadays, people don't see why they can't have a sensible car that also looks good.
I don't see why that can't also be subconscious. Subconscious doesn't mean you can't be aware of it or it can only be one or the other. In this case, I think they mean that the thought comes automatically, you don't have to sit around and consciously think about it first.
And the Conservative Party would not have done something similar if they had been in power at the time? You'll have to excuse me ignorance here, as I'm from NZ, where it's pretty much Labour vs. National.

Yeah, because expensive niche sports electric cars are really a wise investment right now.

Given the recent UK history of data loss, anyone buying a 2nd hand computer might get access to it. Does that count?

That means you'd need to make up for the lack of processing power with additional CPUs, which would mean more CPUs to cool.

Yeah, they should just add every feature that users ask for, like Microsoft Office, because that's a really lean, intuitive application to use.
Because most of what they talk about hasn't anything to do with a specific platform or language.
It's that kind of attitude which is why they are doing so much better than the average small web company. You really think that 10% is the easy part or that it doesn't make much of a difference to the user?
Err... Apple have always made a big deal about design.

Web developer? Any decent website developer should have heard of them. A non-web developer might not have had any reason to heard of, though.

Not everyone wants performance. For many it's more a question of aesthetics. Lots of people buy expensive cars and just drive them around normally.
