  2. Let's not get ahead of ourselves here... on SVG 1.1 Becomes W3C Proposed Recomendation · · Score: 3, Insightful

It's good that a new recommendation is coming out, but people are still trying to get SVG 1.0 right.

For example, try http://www.croczilla.com/svg with your stock IE, mozilla or netscape 6. It doesn't work.

Adobe has an example to show their attempt at http://www.adobe.com/svg/demos/css_layout which only works in IE. But it takes up more CPU power to fade a new squares than flash does.

I am not sure if the world is ready for 1.0 much less 1.1.

That's the reason why the Progear didn't succeed, it was too expensive for their target market (Medical). We looked at this when it came out, and a price tag of $3000 just didn't justify the functionality. Of course it looks like most of the tablet pc are still expensive in the ~$2000 range, but at least people can still use them as laptops on some models.
  5. Finally something that is affordable on Microsoft Hypes XP Tablets · · Score: 1

There's been hypes before, but this one might actually make it. There is a lot of needs for this kind of device in the medical field where a pda doesn't have enough screen space and a laptop is too heavy. It is just that previous implementation were too expensive because they only targeted the medical community (volume is too small to be practical). There are already applications like Medinotes written to take advantage of tablets, so hopefully electronic medical records will become a reality.

This comment made me think twice about how important they think security is: "After all, disruption of eBay, Amazon, Google, or online chat groups does not seem like much of a menace." -- Eugene H. Spaffor A major security breach at eBay or Amazon will surely result in millions of dollars of lost transactions and loss of investor confidence. How is that not a menace? One can argue that the US economy is more important than security because it has an global effect. And without google, most websites won't even need security. We just slashdot them until they are unavailable. :)

How? Easy, just tell the writers at all those magazines that target the population at large to write an article about a 'useful' ;) tool or service (eg. DVD Genie in the January 15th PCWorld newsletter). The general public downloads the program, use it, and the worst part is flaunt it. "Look ma, I can play these DVD's that are cheaper from other countries." Soon after, everyone and their grandma knows about it. D'oh, attention from the authorities and soon followed by a lawsuit from a company.

  17. GPL the source, not the art. on Free The TA Source Code · · Score: 3, Insightful

It seems like no one is citing id Software's release of the source code for Quake I and II. I agree that making TA public domain is a bad idea, but putting just the source code under GPL is not. Infograms can still sell more copies of the game just like id does since the art work is not.

    Just my two cents.
