What is wrong with Mozilla? "Bloat" what exactly is "bloat" memory footprint? HDD footprint? Load Time? Compaired to IE I find it to be very compeditive, plus you are not helping lord gates and mount redmond take over the net/world. You are providing them with a serious challenge which is better for everyone.

Sorry, I just work up and I'm a little cranky. I don't meean to bitch at the parent post specificly just people that are complaining about nit picky stuff while overlooking all the time/energy spent giving them a free speech/beer answer to IE and redmond (something /.ers also complain about)

Instead of just swamping us with annoying packets it could do some major harm. Remember Code Red? something like 90% of infectable hosts infected in 26 hours... the thing could have destroyed the server's OS/file system/whatever. Well go to traffic.com and you can see up to the minute traffic info for most of the US metro areas. They have installed sensors every 1/4 to 2 miles in damn near all freeways and a number of streets. Just 1000 feet away from me right now is one of those things in the street to trigger the new traffic signal "for better traffic flow" and monitoring by the city. It would take very little to add 1 more sensor for RFID data to be passed back over the same system...

  14. Re:Some Points on Effectiveness on Michelin to Include RFID Transmitter in Every Tire · · Score: 2, Insightful

Finally, vehicles move. Even a speedy RFID tag that transmits at 12kbps takes 1/46th of a second to send a typical 256 bit message (serial number + checksum + overhead). It takes 5-6 times this in practice to power the tag, interrogate it, and receive a response, in which time the car has moved >10ft at 60MPH. So even if you could have an ultra-high-gain antenna, it'd have to be significantly steerable, too.

Well this might be true but try this... A trafic signal is equipped with the reader and scans while you are sitting at a red light.

Or... the police car is equipped that is moving at 0 MPH relative to your car regardless to ground speed.

Or... The local gas station/minimart/whatever is equipped to track you in the parking lot.

In short the technology is not evil or anything but it is a powerful tool, and with great power comes great responsibility and I have zero faith that the powers that be will use this power in a responsible manner. It is setting the stage for a Bad Thing

First off that the IETF supporting a working group for XMPP/Jabber kicks ass. But it will not give us what it promises. In no fault of its own... I am sure it will do what it is designed for from a tech POV. Business (read: AOL MSN Yahoo, etc) don't want it. They more than don't want it, they are probably keeping an eye on it out of concern. AOL is the best example of this. They get people to sign up because their friends signed up and they can chat (and according to the ads you can even send pictures in email! WOW!) They don't want you to be able to use just any ISP. Or just any anything. They will not use XMPP/Jabber. They will intentionally not work with XMPP/Jabber. AOL excels at not cooperating in the IM client area. They want it to bee this way, not because they could not from a protocol/technology point of view

In the end XMPP/Jabber will only work with itself. A marvel of interoperability.

And this suits me just fine. They can keep their IM-BS. The rest of us can use somthing else.
