Er, there's this nifty layman's book called A Brief History Of Time by Steven Hawking. I found this book particularly interesting because he explains everything in nice simple terms and doesn't assume you've just taken a college-level calc course. Of course, i'll probably get flamed to a crisp for even mentioning this book or something.
You'd put it in the middle, of course. Or, you could design your own chips with say 64 MB of memory per chip and both the processor and the memory are on one chip! Then, all you'd have to do is stick them all together and watch your SETI@home units crunch! Speaking of SETI@home, you could create fast fourier transform chips out of those transmeta chips, right? Just something to ponder, but a dedicated fast fourier transform chip would be übercool to have in a cluster. Also, you'd have to rewrite/recompile seti@home to use the chip, but if they really wanted those work units then they'd write one.
"The most common type of observation "drone" is the RQ-1A Predator aircraft. The $3.2 million pilotless plane normally operates at 25,000 feet and is capable of flying more than 40 hours." cnn.com
These drones aren't exactly the kind of craft that can go up to 13 miles and stay up there for months on end. These are the kind of aircraft that go out AFTER the US has identified threats to get a closer look, not the "early warning" purpose of the dirigibles.
I have no clue. I've not rebooted my powerbook for several months now, and it runs fine. I've probably screwed up the/etc/rc file so it does prebinding at startup or something odd, long and arduous like that. Come to think of it, I need to defragment my HD.
But, back on topic, try booting from OS 8.1 from a RAM disk. Superspeedyzoomfast! Or, you could just run the darwin layer at startup and get a very fast startup speed.
Sure, it's called Versiontracker Pro. This will keep track of all your updates for you, but you have to pay. The logistics of Apple keeping track of updates for every single program out there for OS X would be a Good Thing to Have (tm), but the logistics of storing every single update for every single app would be overwhelming. We're talking a hugely bigly massive pipe and a few terabytes of storage here, all for a free service. You thing OS X is expensive now? Add in your piece of the updater cost pie.
Sure, let's piss off the 1600 lb gorilla -- 1600, not 800, mind you -- of the music industry. That'd go well, and I really think that Apple would be litigated to death before it could even scream first.
Now, if some disgruntled Dell employee were to make a driver and surreptitiously include it in every new Dell's software and all the old Dell updates, THAT would be funny. I would laugh my ass off.
The duals are even better in a cluster. I dont have any details, but I recently read an article about the grandness of macintosh clusters. Apparently, like the man said, the Macintosh is aimed more at the "lots of processing per cycle", not the "lots of cycles" view. This outlook that Motorola has had, combined with the gigabit ethernet (giving a fatter pipe to communicate with the controller) built in makes the G4 tower have some serious clusterability, especially with things like rendering huge 3D scenes in 4096x3072 resolution. Those clusters could probably finish off a SETI@home unit in about an hour! =D
Why isn't this modded down? It's pretty flamebate-y.
OS that runs on real people's computers
So, I take it, Macintosh users are fake? They're made of cardboard or something? Or maybe they're just extremely productive mannequins (sp?).
wannabe-crays that cost more than a new car
Erm, what kind of car do you drive? An '87 Camry? I find it hard to believe that one can be educated enough (though with trolls, who knows) to post here and can't find a job that pays enough for a car that doesn't suck.
Well, I think we're getting at the fact that people want to be able to remove the included software (a la OS X's mail, IE, iTunes, iMovie, etc) and have it function correctly. People like integration, but integration with an uninstaller is much better.
Oh, and Apple wasn't even going to SUPPORT viewing plain old text on your iPod, but consumer demand won through, and now they have.vcd and.ipodtext(not kidding) support. This deviates from Apple's original stance about how the iPod was JUST an Mp3 player.
Oh, and I'm just curious: are there any hacks/apps like this for comparitive sonicblue products?
Yes, it would be helpful for syncing plain old text files, but the thing is apple was emphasizing the iPod's upload and download speed. Bluetooth (which is slower than USB, even!) would NOT be a clear choice for the iPod because of its speed limitations. Now, if there was wireless firewire, then we'd be talking....
Actually, before a probe is sent out, nasa cleans it down and sterilizes it.
This would explain why all the probes that went to the moon, mars, etc. didn't find the same strain of hardened, vacuum-resistant bacteria all over the solar system.
Ha! I've mailed my senator with several well-thought-out and well-written e-mails and he CHANGED HIS MIND about the stupid bill that we're taling about (acronym's too long). So there. =P

Well, I've got this powerbook and this Dell tower. My Powerbook takes all the abuse(I haul it around in my backpack every day), and guess which computer needed a new mobo, new ram, and a new video card because they all were defective? If you said the Dell, you are correct! It's a tower! It doesn't get dropped! It's practically impervious to abuse, but defective parts will be defective parts. The only part that hasn't worked for me was my airport card, and that was replaced promptly. Dell, on the other hand, wanted something crazy like $2000 for replacement parts, and they aren't even good anymore. Like, a 100mHz bus mobo, and only 128 MB of ram(PC-100 RAM! PC-100!), and a TNT2! Jeez, talk about overpriced!
and kicked it up a notch.
Okay, you're getting sued by Emeril.

Of course, the Teamsters might induce outages if they weren't involved in the transport layer of Route A...
OMFG! Mod this one up!
yeah, can you mod down ARTICLES?
Nah, it was Doubleclick! Doubleclick, I tell you! DOUBLECLICK!
(you know, privacy, violation of privacy, haha, funny. Nevermind.)

I like the high-tech office fans cooling in between the individual units. Very attractive and cool.

Sure, we can all use macs! *glances around* ...er, I mean linux!
I wonder how many admins will take the extra hard disk drive and pop it into their personal computers?
Erm, try changing the languages. There's probably an international english dictionary for built in spellcheck floating around somewhere.

And these proprietary screens would cost HOW much?

Hmm. Anyone heard of servering software for the newton? We could just port that over or something.
