.. my company has a spherical video camera whose format would translate very well to the CAVE system. Can't tell you about practical applications here, but I can tell you at least that the technology to have it use real video, not just CG video, might be interesting to somebody out there.
"very keyboard has it, somewhere on the upper right-hand side, and frankly, it's pretty useless."
It's not useless, it's just not used. Frankly, I can think of a few apps that could make good use of it. I just don't think it occurs to any developers to make use of it. Personally, I'd like to have it work in Lightwave. That could be my symmetry button.
.. what does it take to install this game in Linux? Is it like RPM, or do you have to run a Make script or something? Just wondering if it's any different than running setup.exe and hitting OK a couple of times in Windows.
" Or maybe I am just out of the loop and thats what parents want there kids to do when they grow up..."
You think that kids who play murderous video games are going to murder when they grow up? Give your kids a little credit, will ya? Did anybody your parents grow up with die from a dynamite cigar or an anvil dropped on their head?
"I for one enjoy playing violent games, in particular Grand Theft Auto Vice City... but if I had kids old enough to use a console, even as teenagers, I'd be very reluctant to let them play such a game. Am i a hypocrite?"
Oh I dunno. I mean, if your reasoning was that you weren't sure they were ready to be exposed to something like that, then I'd say no. On the other hand, keep in mind that maybe you have well balanced teenagers that can play something like that and you won't feel the need to be worried about them. My dad wouldn't have been bothered by this game. I was, for the most part, a good kid.
"People don't have to take responsibility for their actions anymore."
Boy, tell me about it. When I was 7 years old, my neighbor friend decided he liked his big wheel better than mine. So he took it. We knew he took it. We went to his mom. "Oh no, he's an angel. I taught him not to steal. He knows never to do that. He didn't take your bigwheel." I went over to the nearby shed in their yard, opened it up, and pulled out my big wheel.
I never thought very highly of her as a parent. It never really sounded like she was in tune with her kids.

I really like how his approach to that basically takes a crowbar to all the people who still prefer IE. I don't mind being given choices, I don't like it when somebody intentionally damages one of them for me.
"Nobody is going to realise the danger of software patents when a handful of Free software projects are affected."
I'm with you in spirit, but I think in this particular case it won't work. Everybody hates Microsoft, the average response is probably "Good, they deserved it."
Now, maybe, just maybe, if IE is broken badly enough as a result of it, then what you expect will happen will happen.
Not trying to argue with your point, just saying in this particular case it may not work as you'd like.
Those CD's say it in very tiny letters somewhere on the case. Also, they don't tell you what is or isn't authorized. It's nowhere near as clear as the warnings before a movie.
I think he thinks either of us cares. Heh. Although I must say, going from excellent karma to only having good karma would definitely be a bigger impact than the insults he's thrown at us so far. Though I think that reflects more on his insults than it does the value of karma here.
"In a well-designed operating system, applications can crash all they want but they can't take anything else with them."
What you said is more accurate than what the dude I responded to said, but it's not quite as simple as that. It's more than making a program crash, it's about making a program do something maliscious.
A 'well written' OS can limit the damage, but no OS is written well enough to be used by Joe Sixpack and still be mischief free. There's always a way to be obnoxious.
I still think he's one of the people in this thread. He'll just deny it, though. Chickenshit.
You can't get ICQ to work in Linux? heh. I think I'll wait a little while before I try to switch again. Big surprise only a few people use it. Oh wait! I forgot! Everybody with a microwave has Linux! Well, in light of that, it should be an awesome desktop OS! YOU are the problem! Heheh
Heh he is dodging that one pretty hard, isn't he? Musta stung.;)
Not sure if you caught my other post to numbnuts, but I've basically reached the conclusion he's just trying to get to me because I got modded up for the "Linux is just now becoming mature" post. Keep arguing with him about the embedded stuff, it's funny. He's totally clueless. He read an article somewhere and thinks he knows it all now.:)
ICQ me when he responds. He's quite obsessive about repying. Guess he's desperate to troll.
"When the power went out across the northeast, the cell towers conked out. How convenient."
Ooo you're absolutely right. I'm going to get me a landline now in case the northeast blacks out like that again.

No, it requires a mouse.

Off topic? Parental attitude is very much an important factor in video game violence.
