"Except that Google probably wouldn't do things like this."

More accurately: The perception is that Google probably wouldn't do this. We perceive it that way because Slashdot hasn't had an article making a mountain out of a molehill about every little bad thing Google does.
Whereas with Microsoft, most people around here would assume that Microsoft would sell kitten burgers in order to gain marketshare with IE. Not because MS has ever actually done this, but because Slashdot tells us that everything MS does is evil.

It's all about perception. We all sport woodies over Google, so we look at the positive side of whatever Google does. We all hate Microsoft, so we look at the negative side of what Microsoft does.

Maybe, but it's not the megapower's fault that they have that option ahead of them. Frankly, I find this funny. Every little IE bug has been blown out of proportion with that famous little jingle "Just another reason to switch to Mozilla/FireFox", and now MS has the chance to do the same thing.

The golden rule applies to browser FUD, too.

"The portion of the anime audience with the technical know-how to operate bittorrent are probably already taking advantage of the great efforts of fansubbers, and those who may be introduced to bittorrent through ADV in some way will surely go on to find these resources."

One of the reasons that I don't have a broader anime library right now is that I basically have to order on-line to get it. (I live in a small town that doesn't have a lot of selection...) Speaking for my household specifically, the instant gratification factor of this distribution model is quite attractive. Yes, I could go download episodes on the web. I really don't want to. I don't want to go looking for them. I don't want to deal with questionable quality. I don't want to put together a bunch of .RAR files. (Note: Yeah, yeah, I know, bittorrent downloads don't typically use that.)

I'm not saying your point is invalid. I don't know what the masses will do. I can tell you that for the shows I'm fanatical about, I want them now now now and I'm willing to pay a reasonable price for the convenience. I doubt I'm alone.

Cohen talked about this a few years ago and he threw the number $10 million around. That is in no way indicative of what the actual budget would be (mainly because I think the implication was a theatrical release...) but you asked for 'an idea'. ;)

Wish I knew where I read that. It might have been in an old IGN.com article. He basically said that Futurama would be well suited as a movie because even though it's a high budget cartoon (sadly, high enough budget that it prevented it from being picked up by another network) that it was so effecient that it'd be a very cheap movie. This was about the time he threw the 10 mil figure out.

Because of this article I'm referring to, I'm not really surprised that this may actually be happening. Very very very happy about it, but not surprised.

"Screenshots released a week earlier had many crying "fake!"

" Thanks to the extra grunt of the Xbox 360's ATI-designed Xenos GPU, the trackside eye candy is clothed in super-sharp 1024x1024 textures, rendered in astounding detail."

"You'd swear that was an actual photo, though I would assume it is just really high-quality artwork. "

"According to the Bizarre Creations Studio Update #6, this amazing texture is only a quarter of the final look. This base texture, called the Diffuse Layer, has three further layers of detail added to it: an Index Channel - is it glass, metal, brick etc?; a Specular Map to provide shine to the material, and finally a Bump Map to add the perception of depth through light & shadowing on a flat surface."

"This contains some 4964 individual textures, each of which as detailed as the fire station above. If you look closely at the full size image, itself massively scaled down for the web, you will see various building textures, various billboards and naturally a large collection of road signs."

The point is really simple: They're using 1024^2 textures with 3 layers of texture information, each. That's pretty damned nice on a technical level. If that's not technically interesting to you, fine, but for artists such as myself, this is a BFD. When gamers see the result, they'll think it's a BFD as well.
