Vlad also murdered people simply because they were foreign merchants. He also murdered for pretty offenses. In Afghanistan the Taliban would lock political opponents in shipping containers until they died of heat stroke and would have you stoned to death for adultery.
The people enforcing these penalties simply take the place of the common crooks (Nazi and NKVD secret police would steal the assets of those they arrested) and even then people will still commit crimes because they don't think they'll get caught.
Great idea. Too bad it doesn't work when no one is around for this cowboy fantasy scenario to work. What about forclosed homes being looted? If they want your AC unit they could wait until no one was home. Signs are nice too but it won't get your wires or plumbing back. Even if they don't manage to steal it they could damage the hell out of your property tying.
I don't think consumables can be fairly included in this topic. You could talk about bottles of milk, cans of oil, etc. All of those get consumed. I think the difference is that this is a nonconsumable, like a car or an air conditioner.
Government through the ages has been the source of tyranny, war, poverty, slavery and death.
Governments are not entities that arrive from outer space, they are built from and supported by citizens, even dictatorships. They can't survive without some sort of core of support from the population. As long as you have people who can see a way to benefit themselves (eg joining the security forces) and the people in general support the government's philosphy (eg there are dangerous elements in the nation that need to be destroyed) then the government will carry on. If you have a general belief in the population that there is a threat to them the government can do all sorts of ugly things (Patriot Act, gitmo, etc). So don't only point a finger at politicians, look at the people around you too.
It is obvious? Really? Please tell that to my mother who is developing it after a lifetime of never eating sugar (genetic diabetes) and eating like a bird.
People love to jump to conclusions based on personal biases and zero evidence.
$ per GB is the deal killer here. Most of our customers balk over spending more on regular drive space when you are talking about terabyte dbs. I could only see these being good for maybe log or temp space until the price comes way down.
The sun is the center of the universe? I though the sun orbited the Milkey [sic] Way Galaxy's central black hole?
At the time of Copernicus the ancient Greeks were considered the last word on all things concerning nature and they belived the earth was the center of everything. You can't really blame Copernicus for not being aware of galaxies and black holes, or quantum mechanics or lasers or all that other stuff that was discovered hundreds of years after him.
can an object of infinite size even HAVE a center?
It is believed that the universe has a finite size.
You could construct an accurately moving model of the solar system, have the earth as the center, and still have it be accurate.
Nope, they tried that already. Having the earth at the center of a model of the solar system required having all sorts of ugly planetary epicycles and such and pretty much didn't work as observations got better.
I'm going to have to reread Genesis. I don't recall seeing anywhere where it says the earth is the center of anything, let alone the universe.
What about Samarium? That can't be exactly cheap. I always wonder about the economic viability of electronics that require rare earth metals like some of the high efficiency solar cells designs that have come out.
It could be worse, it could be a cheese shop that doesn't have any cheese.
"Not much of a cheese shop really?"
Regulation that protects my company = good, regulation that protects someone else (or even just all of us) = bad.
They are still translating the really funny ones from the original schizo-ese.

I think I'd prefer the occasional thief.
Then you'll see people stealing solar panels.
I assume they weigh the containers when they arrive instead of just eyeballing them.
Maybe it is time to compare the cost of copper theft with the cost of a security guard.

I would focus on COPPER recyclers but we should leave the coper recyclers alone.
Now you can ask for a government bailout!

I have seen many of my fellow citizens and I truly don't want them having access to those things. I don't want to be at their mercy either.

Oh and IANAL but I don't belive that YANAL.
You are right, I don't ANAL but I correctly guessed that you ANAL.

None of those companies should worry. We all know that all those stoner Rock Band fans will never remember to show up for the planned court date.
"You have found a diplomatic solution to the crisis. Sorry, you lose!"
Was I the only male reader who instinctivly crossed their legs and grimaced when they read that?

Actually Genesis has more than one description of the origins of the world (1:1-2:3 and 2:4b-2:25). It was assumed that since the earth is created first in the bible that it was the center of things.
Now the search is on for Copernicus' car keys. They are starting with between the couch cushions.
Cosmic rays + a spider? Keep an eye on any astronauts that get bitten by it.

Since every ounce counts when getting something into orbit I don't see lead being a realistic choice in the first place.
lubrication guns had released grease into her toolbag. As she was cleaning the bag and wiping the tools and equipment inside
This is the most obscene thing I've ever read here.
