    It could be that you tried this after MS released the definition file that fixes the problem, and prior to that you hadn't updated since before the broken file came out.

    Just because you didn't get hit doesn't mean no one was firing. :)

    It's really faily trivial to abstract out DB access into a seperate file in PHP, and make the whole app DB-independant. I've already done this on two apps I wrote and am in the process of doing so on a third. I supports MySQL and PostgreSQL and could support more, if requested. Wanna buy my DB2 or Oracle licenses? :)

    I normally don't reply to flaming ACs, but I'll bite.

    Have you actually USED PHP, Ruby, or Python? I've never used Ruby, but PHP and Python are far faster than I've ever needed them to be. Java, on the other hand, is only fast on new hardware. And don't get me started on backwards-compatibility. . .

    Honestly, do you have to troll on EVERY science-related article on /. today? As you yourself said, science is a process of constructing hypotheses, collecting evidence, building theories, and continuing testing. Some theories get altered or outright trashed by evidence, but that's how we make scientific progress. All scientists act upon the best information they have, while trying to in turn collect more information.

    As to your comment about paying for science "involuntarily" and "laws and restrictions", what do you propose? All science be private? Fine. Give back the Internet. As for basing regulations on uncertain science, what do you propose? Basing regulations on, say, the bible? O.o? Are you insane?

    Score one for the "I like violent viedo games but won't let my kids play them until they're actually old and mature enough" crowd. While I think a lot of the games out these days are crap, I still think any sort of ban is ridiculous. Good parenting is more than sufficient. Use a rating system, fine, but a ban is stupid.

    If you're looking for quick and dirty up/down host/service monitoring, check out Limph. Disclaimer: I am the main dev on this project.

    If you need more complex system/router data, Cacti is a really good way to centralize the collection of SNMP data.

    1. Use WindowMaker. 2. Do everything in xterms, no actual x apps. Mutt, Lynx, you get the idea. MySQL command-line client for DB work. 3. Spend Sunday reading /., since nothing new will be posted, and you'll actually have to work. ;)

    I wonder if insurance companies charge more for smokers as compared to non-smokers.

    Most do. My company had us fill out a form and get it signed by our doctors. If we get certified as non-tobacco by our doctors, we get a break on premiums.
