It's sad to see that when it's Microsoft copying an idea or a product, they get press coverage all other the place and others don't.
Stellarium is a great software and has been around for quite a while. I've never seen a mention of it in newspapers or other main stream media such as the BBC web site.
I encourage everyone to install Stellarium on a laptop, go sit in the grass outside at night and have fun finding stars and planets. And Stellarium is as free as the beer you'll likely to be drinking.
Oh, they apologized! I am sure they feel soooo sorry.
Are they also going to get sued for using broad, blind scare tactics without checking their facts?
It seems it is getting a little easy...

There should be laws against this. Why is there none? Are we really allowed to threaten people freely? Really?
"Memory has been measured in kilo-mega-giga-tera-et al. since at least the time that IBM made PCs".
This is not exactly accurate.
The "K" as in "Kb" was never supposed to mean "kilo" (1000 units) but really "1024 units". Historically the k was an unfortunate/poor choice of terms to designate "1024 bytes". And you normally don't say "Kilo-Byte" but "K-byte" if you really want to point out the difference.
This has been lost over the time with computers going to the general public. As for mega, tera and the like, it's just an extension of that poor choice of words/letters.
At the time when people used to say "K-bytes", 640K of them were considered enough for anyone (Hi Bill!). The usage of mega or tera came later as computer capacities increased. And the mistake got mainstream .
As for Creative, it really looks like they were trying to play with the confusion and mislead consumers.
Or maybe it was a mistake made by someone who should have known MUCH better.
Examples like Pidgin fork maybe working as intended but I still can't stop thinking that there's a lot of waste of good will and efforts in the Open Source community, which in the ends bites back and generate products which quality could be better.
Sorry but that's a very valid point and you're just an arrogant troll.
Many developers are blindfolded enough to think their views fit better what the users want than years and a bunchload of dollars invested in R&D, then invest their time in re-inventing the same thing again, with maybe a slight difference no one really cares about (or that makes a feature totally missing the point).
Just look at the current Pidgin controversy for a good illustration of the parent's opinion. It's in yesterday's/. news.
And (since the parent mentionned it), look at the usability disaster that GIMP is! It's so incredibly bad it should actually have a room in a museum somewhere. Why didn't people just followed the examples provided by the very successful commercial applications that are around in this field? Why is that such a big buzz around making GIMP look more like the Photoshop layout?
Any answer to that besides "do your own coding"?
(which we probably do better than you according to your level of language and the total lack of ideas expressed in your post).
Since your./ ID is over the million, you must be new here and, in a grand welcoming gesture of mine, I will share this Slashdot secret with you.

I would turn the question the other way around. If the ratio of gamers among Linux users is low, wouldn't that be because gamers CANNOT use Linux for the obvious reason we all suffer from: no game editor ever considers Linux. Why? I leave it to Linux experts to discuss that.
I think the question is wrongly phrased and has only one obvious answer.
I would be a gamer Linux user if there was any interesting game on Linux.
There's none. Zero, nada.
At least bring WoW in (no link sending me to Wine please...) so I can finally ditch Windows.
Linux will have one more gamer user.
being an Engineer means that when you screw up, people die
I'm a computer scientist, AKA as "software engineer" in 90% of countries I worked in.
If I make a mistake and insert a wrong value in a database, or someone didnt test something correctly, thousands can die in a train crash. Is that engineering?
I'm shame for my country.
It is not THAT bad. Look at the Bush administration and the neo-cons. It's just worse. However, that's true that the political class in France is late of about 20 years on about every single thing.
In any case you could consider moving to Canada. Been there, done that, it's cold but a lot of fun! And there are new american friends joining the fun every day!
Slashdot, chill out. This is just a proposal to propose a proposal for a bill. The text has been reviewed by the french assembly today and there are a lot of voices against. If it ever becomes a proposal for a bill, at first glance it looks like it's going to be rejected.
Actually, the main argument against is that the suggested bans are anticonstitutional since they would provide judicial power to administrative agencies (like MAFIAA allowed to send subponeas without a court order). This kind of violations really don't fly in France.
I've read much better fiction than the FA.
Good luck with your team of 10 on Titan, 300 on Mars and "thousands" on the moon in 50 years, but us here in Real Life aren't on the moon yet, still trying to figure out how to survive 10 days on Mars with a crew of 3, and stare at Titan in amazement with telescopes while hoping and crossing fingers that the decade-long journey of our preferred probe makes it there.
Nice and fun read, but definitely irrelastic, with absolutely no serious base to back all the nice dreams.
I'm not sure I get the difference. Your definition of US sales taxes match the VAT one exactly. VAT is not included in any exchange between merchants, and, if it is, it is refunded at the end of the fiscal year. So the balance is 0 for the merchants and no one has paid taxes while echanging goods. At the end of the day, VAT is charged to the consumer only.
Before you start complaining about the US price vs the European prices, always remember to remove the VAT from the European prices. Why can't Europeans bother to remember such a simple thing? List prices in the US do not include tax.
Well, USA is so great, everyone should do the same and think like us! Including deceiving people on prices by never including taxes. Actually, you know what? VAT is on every european price as to make sure everyone is aware of the real price of things. But companies in USA are so powerful and money is so much in the heart of the country that doing such a simple would be unthinkable.
You are going to show how smart you are and run Linux in a VMWare session.
Does the judgement says you are not allowed to? If the tracking software can't track activity on a VM, it's not the defendent job's to make it work.
Jail and sentences are a dictatorship not a democracy!
If you think that, you're far away from understanding the whole idea behind sentences. You should read Michel Foucault more often (someone who spent a lot of time thinking about the concept, and wrote books).
If after the sentence you want to change things, so be it, get active and change things.
Why wait? It is because people postpone the idea of "changing things" that nothing changes. If you wait for things to happen, it's too late. As an example, are you going to wait to be wiretapped by the FBI without any reason before protesting against wiretapping? Or wait 'till the bridge collapses to consider some maintenance on it?
You should put more thoughts in your speech before blasting someone and use CAPS. Also, the "wait till it happens" behaviour never led anyone anywhere.

Thanks for mentionning it.

+1 for this patch.
That's the only thing you've found to troll around or are you a real grammar Nazi, or is it's a joke that's not funnny?
Thanks for all the great details. Now, can I have your job?

Woaaa, internal bleeding at the first sign of any kind of education! You must not be new here.
you're supposed to only laugh at a joke, not dissect it.I might lack a bit of humour, but the joke isn't obvious, nor good, nor funny. It hardly can be qualified as 'joke'.
And who modded you funny anyway?
I enjoyed the historic recap. Thanks!
How about "uneducated douchebag"?
Making yourself an arse once in such way is already quite something. Bragging about it is close to psychological deficiency.
