A great read, and applicable to today. Basically, the North didn't have it's heart in the fight with the South until Southern supporters became increasingly hard-line in their dealings with the Feds.
I think people like you will be really surprised if they start something that wakes the silent majority of Americans. The ones who aren't happy, but are willing to work with the system.
Yes, the issue is complex, and yelling "white privilege" does not capture those nuances. However, it's purpose is only to get people to acknowledge there is something there, nuances and all.
If you open the windows entirely, you get external coolness, but also humidity. Without some sort of awning, you get still get alot of heat from the sunlight.
If you just open the shades, what I was referring to, you get only heat from the sun, too much for more then 2/3rd's of the year.
Not white over here either, which was made abundantly clear to me during certain of my school years. Not black either, actually white Father, Mother was first in her Mexican family to be born in the U.S., her parents never spoke English, but she never spoke Spanish around us.
I was an Army Brat, which gave me insight into different parts of the country, but also protected me, because the Army (is/was) one of the most progressive organizations when it comes to race relations.
It's a convenient fiction to say that race doesn't matter anymore, or that people should have recovered from slavery over the past 100+ years, but it's absolutely a fiction. While slavery was 100 years ago, there were Government policies designed to harm blacks as recently as the 1970's, if white's couldn't get over slavery in 100 years, why should blacks? Read some history. There is a reason for the anger felt by blacks. Other races have benefited from the civil rights movement, but did not have the couple hundred years of oppression in the US that blacks have dealt with.
I'm almost certain that during the majority of the year it's less efficient to use external light and remove the heat then it is to just use electric lights. I still like to open the windows, but it's a trade off.
Out of the last 5 companies I've worked for, 3 have bought, by preference, majority HP servers, 2 have preferred HP network gear, and the others were more agnostic, but still have some HP hardware.
HP servers and networking gear are still well regarded in the industry. Yes, you pay a premium, but most businesses are happy to do so and get a quality product. I still seen Proliant G2's just being retired. Those EOL'd in 2007, but support has been avaliable through HP and third party vendors.

Mortgages tax deductions are a give away to the wealthy, I'm not going to spend all day arguing it, it's well accepted. 401k's are an OK solution to your problem, but as they currently exist, they are a big giveaway to the financial industry, again, that's well accepted.
We all know the parts you listed are only a fraction of the cost, the big money is the final product, that markup should be taxed where it is sold. Access to that market has huge value.
Why don't we do what we can to fix the problem we have, and guard against these future problems. You guys are standing Mt. Everest claiming one stop down will put us in the Mariana Trench. Frankly, this is costing you alot of credibility.
The wealthy and get way more out of mortgage deductions then your average homeowner, not to mention the unwashed hordes of renters. No matter what quantitative easing was designed to do, it benefits the wealthy and should have been ended, low interest rates help the stock market and wealthy investors, but hurt the rest of us. 401k's are a way to move retirement funds into a place they can be tapped for fees and other financial shenanigans. They move risk from companies to individuals.
