People at my job don't know what linux is (and I don't bother them since I know that they don't care about computers). Some co-workers have complained about Vista in coffee breaks and everyone complain about the start up time of the computers at work (Windows XP). I don't know if they complain about the start up time of their home computer (why would I want to talk to them about their home computer? I like linux, but I do not want to be a computer saviour of people I work with on non-IT related problems.)
Anyway, I don't care. I use Ubuntu at home (just updated to 9.04!) in my bubble, and my co-workers complain about Vista in their bubble. And we are all stuck with Windows XP at work, but at least XP does what is needed in our work environment.
Actually, the most ironic thing is that watching Saddam's hanging gave you respect for the man. The shiit thugs killing him were shouting and making fun of a man that was about to die, but Saddam answered them calmly and with more courage than I expect Bush or any of the other people behind the Iraq war would have knowing they are about to die in a minute.
(I remember watching Wolfowitz scared shitless trying to keep it together in front of the cameras after his hotel had been hit by mortar fire in Baghdad. What contrast to the arrogant self-assurance Wolfy had when orchestring a war on false pretenses, a war that he should have known would cause thousand of innocent people and US soldiers to die.)
Then Saddam is hanged before he is able to finish his last prayer to God, a perfect ending to an execution that encouraged Saddam loyalist and ensured that the brutal dictator was transformed into an Iraqi martyr. And again, the beautiful irony that Saddam finally manages to create a picture of himself as a religious leader, after having problems saying the muslem prayers correctly in propaganda shots earlier in his career. Even Saddam's mortal enemy bin Laden must have been proud of the propaganda value of that last prayer cut short.
The thing many people in the US have a problem to understand is the shear stupidity that lies at the bottom of many of the Bush gangs decitions. Bush supporters think "Saddam hanged, yeah!" and consider it done in a manly way. But the fact is because of the incompetence shown in how the trial is performed and how Saddam's life is ended (like so many of the other "manly" things Bush wanted to do) US is instead shown as weak and the opposite message and result of what was wished for is achieved.
I am sorry, if that is the best you could find you are making a fool of yourself. None of those quotes makes a fool of Obama like the Bushism who showed what a shallow guy that spoiled brat was.
Obama has already had plenty of Obamaisms (basically anytime he isn't in front of a teleprompter), yet I don't see people like Olberman leading off their show with them they way he did with Bush.
Care to share one of these Obamaisms that we haven't been told about yet? I can think about Obama's comment that his bowling was "special olympics", even though I found the people complaining being a bit PC.
The zero of Fahrenheit -- the freezing point of saturated brine -- is no less sensible than the Celcius zero of the freezing point of water. Fahrenheit is also more precise with fewer digits in the ranges most people deal with day to day.
Sorry, but that is just stupid. Below zero I expect ice on the road when driving to work. In winter time that is a daily issue; I have never ever worried about if saturated brine is freezing. Same with the boiling point of water, which is an issue every day when making dinner. And 37.5 C is just as fine to use if you need more digits.
It is strange that US nerds can't understand that standards are needed to communicate efficiently and that national pride is stupid when dealing with an international standard.
If they don't like the name American, then they can call us United States of American, or... American for short.
Someone who call you USian is in general someone who think "Americans" think too much of themselves (reflected in the fact there are many Americans that are not USians) and also in generally think that USians should stop telling everyone what to do (like you just did when it comes to what you want to be called).
Seriously, for the individuals that want to Nitpick about the name, there is no place called "America".
This is not true just because you were taught that in school, America can be both used when talking about the USA or talk about both South and North America together. But to nitpick, both you and the people using USian instead of Americans knows what is implied in this change.
There is "North America" and "South America". I'm pretty sure that "North American" is universal understood to be someone from any country in North America.
Where I am from in Europe when people talk about North American they usually mean USA and Canada together, or in other words the English speaking parts of America (forgetting the French and Spanish speaking in these countries). This can sometimes lead to confusion when others also remember that Mexico is in North America, but it does not lead to much confusion since this usage is the most common.
Also, there will be no confusion if one talks about USians, Canadians and Mexicans, even though everyone knows that USians is a mocking term for Americans.
What was [president Bush] supposed to do, Fly to Baton Rouge and bully her into making a decision that [the small state Governor] felt was unnecessary?
Yes, who ever expect a president to act like a leader in a crisis?! I mean, the decider can't make such tough decitions straight from the hip! When people are dying in the street, the leader of the free world needs to eat cake with the people who paid to get him elected, so that he has a clear head when the voters starts to ask questions why nothing was done.
It's been a very long time since it mattered whether the president was from one wing or the other of the ruling party. The fact that Obama and McCain both voted for the bailout makes that clear.
You neglect to mention that the bailout was needed because the current president is from the wrong wing of the wrong party.
It is false to imply that Bush personally awarded a contract to Halliburton. The âno-bid contractâ(TM) in question is actually an extension of an earlier contract to support U.S. troops overseas that Halliburton won under open bidding.
So Halliburton won the contract under open bidding during Clinton. Then Bush only "extended" those contracts conviniently in a no bid contract. Funny how the wingnut writing the text don't say anything if the contract changed anything when "extended".
The problem is that it was a no bid contract. Why not let it be a contract where in the free marked competitors could lower the price? Why is it so acceptable to you that Halliburton got all those contracts by "negotiation" with Cheney without any other company getting the chance to make an offer to do the job?
Of course part of the absurd humour in the Monty Python sketch is that there are no parrots in Scandinavia. But Monty Python probably should have expected this story: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/1958285/Monty-Python's-dead-parrot-did-exist.html. Basicly, Norwegian parrots did exist 55 million years ago, even though it is not known if they were blue...
From the link: Michael Palin was amused when told about the discovery, saying: "All I can say is that it just shows that nothing is original."
The earth is not an energy conserved place. Remember it is the "Green House effect", so according to the content of CO2 and other climate gases in the atmosphere the total energy content increases or decreases over time.
And what do you mean with disconfirmed models? You mean disconfirmed by your truthiness gut feeling? Of course, even though the Green House effect has been known since Arhenius over 100 years ago, advanced climate computer models had to wait for advanced computers. And the models predict that the temperature is rising. And it is.
Global temperature is not some abstract term. Just take the temperature (in the sea if you worry about humidity) at some fixed places (away from heat islands, which you know is not unknown to the climate models) and see how the temperature develops over the years. Of course on a longer time scale you will have to use ice cores, tree rings etc, but still there is a good correlation between the temperature readings by these completely different methods on a large time scale.
Finally, you don't even get the pollution part right! CO2 is not dumping "garbage" into the atmosphere, it is not garbage, CO2 is what plants live off. The problem is that CO2 is a climate gas that makes the average temperature of our planet increase.
I hope you are not trolling. I guess it is natural to bury your head in the sand when the truth is scary...
Humidity is not an independent variable, it is depenend on temperature. Probably the best way to monitor the temperature is to seperate the globe into some sensible areas (based on relevant time scale). For instance the average temperature of northern Europe is a well defined consept for millions of years. The Himalayas have probably been less stable climate wise (humidity) on the same time scale. If then the average temperature is rising in all these seperate areas of the globe at the same time, the total average is also clearly rising.
Another record from the ocean is the acidity (CO2 adsorption), something that again can be corolated to the industrial revolution. Of course all these things we are discussing is known to climate scientists...
It is easier to defend a medium sized country that is really a corner of the European continent with dykes than a small island. This is because of the area of land compared to sea boarder.
Maybe they should buy some old oil platforms instead. There are many around no longer in use and they can place them close to where they live today. And if they are really lucky they will strike oil and accelerate their need for a new home...

I talked to someone in a research group working with optical tweezers on biological cells, and they asked potential PhD students if they played games since it actually gave them a head-start when operating these equipments. It was of course not the sole criteria for accepting a PhD student in their group, but they had empirical evidence gaming was a benifit.:)
We don't know much about Obama, and what we do know, is unflattering...
We have got to know every detail non-stop about Obama for the last 2 years, including how he voted present in 129 votes out of about 4000 made in the Illinois senate. And it has been discussed to death that Obama used the present vote to show that he was not satisfied with how the final law ended up (a common tactic in Illinois political system), while on some Obama cleverly also avoided to take sides on controversial issues.
What more do you need to know about Obama? That his middle name is Hussein?

The tests are done on Windows Vista. The test shows that the bloated Vista is in the "Stone Age" compared to efficient OS's like Linux.
Would this murder have happened if it would have been harder for the kid the get hold of a gun?

So does McCain. He dictates emails and his wife types them. Much more accurate than any software-based voice recognition I know of.
Not when the wife is a drug addict.
