Yeah, a lot of people can't seem to grasp the control scheme. I'm not sure what it is, some mental spatial mapping that some people can't wrap their heads around. I've always thought of it like asteroids, rotate left/right and thrust. And given the style of game, you can't really do any other control scheme. They wanted more detailed graphics than any game engine/hardware could provide at the time. So they did prerendered backdrops at different angles, and once they went that way, the control scheme used is really the only way to go. This started with alone in the dark.

Now that we are approaching graphics capable of doing that stuff in real time, we might see an end to this but I hope not. I think this limitation of game engines bore a new style of gameplay. And games like Dinocrisis still used that style even though it was a 3d engine. And it was a little creative in using pans/zooms that can't be done in prerenedered stuff.

It used to drive me nuts the guys on electric playground always critizing this style of gameplay. As I said, for some reason, some people just can't grasp it. A friend of mine bought fear effect for the ps1, and was bumping into walls on every turn. I thought after awhile he'd get used to it but he couldn't. It seems it's something you can either play or can't.

Now, on nintendo locking in RE, as I mentioned, pc is usally excempt from these exclusive agreements, but I guess that's not the case here. I've always hated these agreements though. Let it come out on everything and let the best version win. Like in the days of genesis/snes. Sure, each had their own 1st party titles (mario for snes, sonic for gen) but 3rd party developers released on both and let the best version win. I wonder how lucritive these deals are to stop a developer from releasing on other platforms? Halo comes to mind here.

Anyways, I might just have to give in and grab a gamecube.

I'm a huge fan of this series and was surprised sony let a deal with capcom slip away. The previous games on the playstation were ported to pc. Any word on these being ported to something else? It never seemed like a good fit RE being on a cutsy game console. Now if nintendo locked up a few more mature titles and advertised that 'it's not just for the kiddies' it might have went somewhere. As it is, I don't think RE did too well on the gamecube.

So anyone got any word on whats the deal? Is capcom locked into gamecube with the RE series? And usually pc is excempt from such deals, but so far I haven't heard any word of a port.

Also if use alpha xvid codecs and it doesn't playback properly with ffdshow, you know that your vid isn't mpeg4 compliant. Btw, I capture/encode shows all the time in windows and would like to do this in linux, but it seems really lacking. First off, avisynth is an indispensable tool for dealing with video. What first attracted me to it was the best ivtc plugin by Donald Graft. This processes telecined sources back to their original film frame rate which I use on toons/film sources.

But the versatility goes way beyond that. Here's an animated menu I made for batman tas for a vcd I was working on, which btw I authored with videopack 5 to include animated menus, galleries with audio and chapter selection (I love pimpin that :) ).

Also worth mentioning is Tmpgenc, probably the best mpeg 1 encoder, which is free. And not to shabby mpeg2 encoding. Also of course is virtualdub, which has come in handy on many occasions.

So where are the comparable linux equivalents? I couldn't find them. I'd love to see a write up on video encoding on linux, maybe I'll do one myself.

    May 9, 1998
At night, I played poker with Scott the guard, Alias, and Steve the Researcher. Steve was really lucky, but I think he was cheating. What a scumbag.

    May 10, 1998
Today, a high-ranking researcher asked me to take care of a new monster. It looks like a gorilla without any skin. They told me to feed them live food. When I threw in a pig they were playing with it pulling off its legs and pulling out its guts before they actually ate it.

    May 11, 1998
Around 5 'o clock this morning, Scott came in and woke me up suddenly. He was wearing a protection suit that looks a space suit. He told me to put one on as well. I heard that there was an accident in the basement lab. It's no wonder; those researchers never rest even at night.

    May 12, 1998
I've been wearing this damn spacesuit since yesterday; my skin grows musty and feels very itchy. By way of revenge, I didn't feed those dogs today. Now I feel better.

    May 13, 1998
I went to the medical room because my back is all swollen and itchy. They put a big bandage on my back and told me that I don't have to wear the spacesuit anymore. I guess I can sleep well tonight.

    May 14, 1998
When I woke up this morning, I found another blister on my foot. I went to the dog's pen and ended up dragging my foot. They have been quiet since morning, which is unusual. I found that some of them had escaped. I'll be in real trouble if the higher ups find out.

    May 15, 1998
Even though I didn't feel well, I decided to go see Nancy. It's my first day off in a long time, but I was stopped by the guard on the way out. They say the company has ordered that no one leave the grounds. I can't even make a phone call what kind of joke is this!?!

    May 16, 1998
I heard a researcher that tried to escape was shot last night. My entire body feels burning and itchy at night. When I was scratching the swelling on my arm a lump of rotten flesh dropped off. What the hell is happening to me?

Client/server has every advantage over for p2p except the obvious burden of the steep requirements to run a server. This doesn't seem to be a problem though as there are literally thousands of quake servers (never mind all the other fps).

When I am playing on a quake server my only concern connection wise is 'Can I send/receive packets fast enough to/from the server?' With P2P, I now have to have a good connection with each player, which obviously doesn't scale well. P2P is also only as strong as the weakest link. One player with a bad ping can hurt the experience for everyone. Nevermind the overhead of having to tell say 6 other computers where I am/what I'm doing in the gameworld versus telling one computer.

Id brought us the first popular online game experience with client/server and all the nice things like player prediction that made it possible to enjoy a fast paced game over a modem.
