Anyone else notice that when one enters an FTP site with Safari that it doesn't load the directory in the browser window but rather mounts the server on the desktop, making it browsable via the Finder? I went to download the GIMP with Safari, and noticed this behaviour.
"...but I got rid of both Toast and Charismac's Discribe [charismac.com] and just use the built-in cd burning software.
Does everything I need from burning files or whole.dmg images to cd to making audio cd's via iTunes...."
The Finder (or Disk Copy, for that matter) won't copy certain discs that Discribe will. SC: Brood War, for example. And iTunes doesn't copy, it rips to file then burns individual tracks. Makes albums like Pink Floyds The Wall (and a lot of classical stuff) pause between tracks, which isn't how they were intended to be heard. And if you use the default settings, then it rips to mp3 (160) beforing reconverting to wav. There is loss of quality. I personally can hear the difference in RATMs Bulls on Parade from the original and a copy made this way. Set the prefs to WAV to get the best quality sound. 'Course, the file sizes tend to be rather large. I delete the WAVs after burning, and keep just mp3s on my computer.
You also lose any 'extras' that may have been included on the disc. Video clips, for example. Limp Bizkit comes to mind, although I can't remember the album.
"...If you use an Apple computer, you can't even get the disc out of the tray. It requires the time and cost of taking the computer into a repair shop and having it removed that way..."
Or you could just hold the mouse button down whilst rebooting...
Apple really needs to provide an obvious external means of ejecting CDs.
"What is really interesting, however, is that the most phenomenal growth is by SUSE, which doubled it's market share in the same year that Mandrake upped its market share by a measly %10."
I've had great luck with SuSE, and none whatsoever with Mandrake. I have SuSE 6.2 installed on my homemade PC; tried Mandrake for it's supposed 'ease of use for newbies', but it has difficulties with my system bus. Any time it tries to 'query' the bus/PCI cards it locks up. Windows has some problems with it as well. But not SuSE. Savin' my pennies for 8.x.
I still have a functioning IIe, with a hacked copy of Ultima IV. One of the best games ever. Used to go into the character stats via some program whos name I can't recall and change all the stats to 'FF', along with my inventory. Who's to say that it had to be in some civilized, well-mannered part of the galaxy? Why could it not have taken place along the fringes, in the backwaters, amongst the gutters? And just because the "Rebels" won, that doesn't mean that peace is sure to reign; just look at todays real world. The underdog defeated the mighty evil over in Afghanistan (Mujihaddin(?) vs. USSR), but did it bring on an era of peace? No, they immediately fell to in-fighting, and opened the door for an even greater nemesis - the Taliban.
Face it, George Lucas has grown fat and sedentary. He has lost his creativity. 'Phantom' was a joke. The best character, Darth Maul, was created as an after-thought ; the actor was originally hired to train others for the sabre duels, and when George saw is abilities, he wrote the character in at the last minute. Only to kill him off. Jar-Jar Binks is a not-very-funny joke. And where the HELL did he get the LAME idea to incorporate R2-D2 and C3PO?
The first three (Star Wars, Empire, Jedi) were EXCELLENT stories, although the best by far was the first. It opened up a whole new genre of both movies AND toys (miniature action figures, and all that came with them. THATS where Lucas made the $$$. He owned ALL the rights to ANY toy based on SW. my first was Darth Vader, with the sliding light sabre - 8th birthday). The original Star Wars was unlike those that have followed in that it was capable of standing on it's own, as a complete story. Empire ended with the capture of Han and the cutting off of Lukes hand, while Jedi couldn't exist without Empire.
Anyways, to claim that the movies relied mainly upon visuals, action and comedy is ludicrous. Up until Phantom, the story was what it was about. All the rest was the proverbial cherry on top...
After downloading the teaser/trailer, go to your browser's cache, if possible.
I use iCab pre2.6 on Mac OS9, which caches into "System Folder -> Preferences -> iCab -> iCab Cache"
iCab Cache is a collection of folders labeled "a" through "z".
IE caches into one single file that I don't know how to get into.
Anyways, I just poke through the cache folders (or use Sherlock to search for all ".mov" files) and look for large, ".mov" files. Drag-n-drop outa the cache, rename, and BINGO! There you go.
I did this with the LOTR full-screen, but it didn't work for the AOTC medium; the cache folder size decreased as I downloaded, but it didn't show up...

I think thats right; I'm new to this whole coding game (sure is fun, though). Remember, the point is to make the sap think that it installed correctly, at least intil he/she tries to access those other partitions.
Newsbytes is reporting that the individual states have refused to sign on. And it just may be a 'good thing' in the long run for it to pan out this way. MS will continue it's monopolistic practices, as demonstated by it's XP licensing requirements (what if I don't have an internet connection?), and just maybe will get smacked harder in the future. In the short term , it becomes even more imperative to suppport alternatives, including open source AND Apple (I know, they'd do the same given half a chance...), and do what you can to either
1) steer friends/relatives/employers to these alternatives or
2) convince said friends/relatives/employers to stick with what they have (which shouldn't be too difficult given the current financial conditions.)

When the iPod first came out, it was decried as yet another soon-to-be-discontinued Apple experiment. It was called over-priced and under-valued. Many were the posts that blasted it as too niche for even Apples niche market. Now, suddenly, we hear people asking for a Windows version of iTunes, and can it run Linux (or BSD). We hear that the drive it uses retails for the same as the iPod itself. The iPod may in fact be the breakthrough that Jobs claims it is (ok, maybe not, but closer than people thought it was a week ago). Here's why -
Anyone who may have been considering purchasing a Toshiba MK5002MAL will now give MUCH greater consideration to buying an iPod instead. I know it's not as easy to switch out as a 'true' PCMCIA device, but even if you don't have a Mac, you can still use it as a FW drive. This will drive sales up considerably - there is a market for it outside the Mac world even without iTunes and its MP3 capabilities. And how long before someone hacks it, makes it work with other OSes.
Know what I think? I think Apple SHOULD release a Windows version of iTunes, and CHARGE FOR IT! How long have Mac users had to pay extra to play with Windows? VPC, SoftWindows, Orange Micro PCI adapter cards, MacLink, the list goes on. Well, you know what, Windows users? If you want the ease, the function, and yes, the glitz and shiny baubles, then BUY APPLE! Or else commence hacking...
In addition, one easter egg has already been discovered - the game Breakout! is hidden within. MacAddict reports on it, as does MacityNet. Who knows what other goodies lurk within, or that Apple will release for it. I, for one, do not believe that an MP3 player is all that Apple has planned for it. We've had a few pleasant surprises since it's previewing, who knows what will happen once it's released to the general public. I, for one, want one VERY much.
