  1. Why is this a shock? on Sun Exec Backs GPLv3 · · Score: 2, Insightful

Why would it be a shock that Java is not licensed under the GPLv3? GPLv2 is well understood now in the legal community, and GPLv3 is going to be examined under a fine toothed comb for a long time even after it is published. It could be a long time before you see major software from large companies published under GPLv3 if at all.

Overall, this will be a good deal for both short-term cash and the inherent 'safeness' in buying a Novell platform in your Enterprise environment. The world isn't turning upside down here folks.

This is a simple technology "We done it!" announcement. Nothing more.

DB2 main attractiveness for being free is its feature set. PostgreSQL already has a well developed feature set for a 'free' offering so you may not get as much from it unlike if you migrated from MySQL. No offense to MySQL, but for now its claim to greatness is being 'free' and speed, not having a fully developed feature set.

Bottom line is that this free DB2 should be considered an evaulation kit for a larger deployment more than anything else since its way more than you need for a small system.

It would be pretty logical that google would like to control something that is comparable to sun and microsoft's bigtime server languages. Python has moderately fast bytecode (google stuff could improve a lot here) and it's got a decent oop model and a threading api. i/o is also usable. i think zope fans can hype their favourite thing in the responding posts too.

Microsoft hasn't been asleep either when it comes to Python. They hired the original guy who worked on the Iron Python project http://www.ironpython.com/ which brought Python to .NET.

I think this solution using only low voltage wires will achieve that 100 percent home penetration while creating the least amount of interference. It beats everyone having a WiMax modem in their house.

The question is whether the right BPL solutions which generate the least amount of interference are being presented to the people deploying these networks, and whether they are purposedly ignoring the pleas of Ameteur radio operators or ignorant of the choices in the solution?

  12. Re:VOIP is still not worth it. on Linksys Debuts Cordless Skype Handset · · Score: 5, Insightful

Why should I go to a service that 1) requires me to own a computer, 3) requires me to have a broadband conection, 3) is dependent on my electricity not going out, and 3) requires me to purchase an expensive phone when I could simply get Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS - with better sound quality and no dropouts) for a mere $8 monthly (yes, that's really what I pay)?

    Well lets see:

    1. Skype is free with other skype users so that means unlimited worldwide calls. How much do you think your $8 phone plan with the default long distance provider is going to charge for a call from the US to India?
    2. Your local plan will probably still charge you for local extended calls so enjoying calling the place across the street from you for free but you'll get charged in 6 second increments for everything else.
    3. Most people own a computer that has USB support
    4. A lot of people have broadband.
    5. A one time cost of $130 is not excessive.
    6. Skypeout is extremely cheap when you need to call regular folk with their own line. I bet I can call a lot of far off places for awhile on that $8 you spend just keeping the phone line active.
