using that old Pretenders song on the bb pad TV commercial just makes them sound a little bit desperate to me...
"Give me some attention... PLEASE... anyone? anyone??? really, I'm special!"
this is off-topic, but must be mentioned...
that chick in the pre TV commercials is very odd looking. it's actually kinda spooky how odd looking she is... sorta alien.
it freaks me out and makes me feel like i just witnessed something wrong in a petri dish.
The Zune is just a jealous attention starved child... it noticed that it's big brother the XBox was getting plenty of attention with it's "ring of death" strategy...
"McFeters suggests providing bonuses for good developers, and taking away from bonuses for those that can't keep up. It's an interesting approach that if used, might force companies to take a stronger stance on security related issues."
They already are considered defects. The only thing that might change is the prioritization of defects. This topic is ridiculous.
Bonuses? Are you suggesting bonuses for finding defects? In 20 years I've worked at only once place that awarded bonuses for resolving defects. The idea failed within weeks. I thought everyone had come to realize it was a bad idea and for obvious reasons. Must be a new generation of devs taking to the reigns and retrying old dead ideas.
You know what force[s] companies to take a stronger stance on security related issues? The consumer. Assuming the consumer knows anything and isn't just buying the same thing his cousin did because his cousin knows a guy who knows a guy who is a half-wit "computer consultant". Too many community college consultants out there...
How many days (hours?) until a clever person with free time ("free time"??) plays around with Wireshark and learns what he needs to whip up a little Perl script to spoof the "home" in the equation. A little entry in the hosts file to redirect it to localhost where the script says "all is well, check back in 10 days".
"And since it's run by Microsoft, you know you can trust it."
I wonder if we'd get that comment if it were a Google service. Can we trust Google any more than Microsoft? Around here it sure seems like Google gets a free pass on everything and can do no wrong...
Dude, this is Slashdot... we're supposed to see if we can flamebait or troll without getting moderated as such.
YES, it's wrong for anyone, regardless of party, to screw with an election ("steal" it, etc). In fact, I feel the same way about trivial "elections" like American Idol. On one hand it was kinda funny, sure, when Howard Stern tried to get his listening audience to keep Sanjaya in the running, but I'd rather it be honest. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but I think that the show's producers manipulate the results; probably routinely.
As for actual elections that matter- no, I don't believe that the replublicans (small 'r') stole the election; regardless of any websites you might link to. I think that both parties attempt screwing with as much as they think they can get away with. As someone who used to work as a volunteer at my local poll center I can say that I've seen quite a bit and from my own experience I'd say that democrats push the limits more than republicans as a matter or routine. But they are all jerks.
It's really sad when the software controlling slot machines at the casino have (quite strict) legislated inspection and auditing than far exceeds what the software controlling voting machines is subjected to.:(
Let's be sure that nobody can steal a dollar; but if they can help a democrat steal an election... so be it.
"first experimental demonstration of a phenomenon that causes a busy freeway to inexplicably grind to a halt"
Nope, not first. Texas A&M has been studying this for over a decade. I've read several other stories from various organizations as well. But, whatever.
If you think about the entire problem as one thing to swallow then you will be overwhelmed. Just know that it takes time. Since this is an existing codebase there is probably an existing queue of bugs (bugzilla, remedy, mantis, whatever)... work through them.
Also, people have argued this with me, but I do find it helpful to reformat the files manually. I'm assuming that there is no clear coding guide that they adhered to (spaces / tabs, indenting, etc). So, what I will often do in order to learn some unfamiliar code that I'm expected to own going forward is reformat it all manually. I prefer to use emacs and I'll include a modeline at the top that is suitable for emacs and vi, and then I'll work through the file reformatting it while gaining some dry understanding and adding comments as I go. Of course, when you reformat a file you should check it back into the source control as a commit that is separate from any actual logic changes.
So- give it time, learn it in chunks, exercise the code and step through it when helpful, make it yours, and most helpful (in my experience) work through the bugs (set a goal, like reduce the overal open bug count from 100 to 10).
Can't an anniversary be a single day? This Slashdot anniversary is dragging out longer than a Twinkie can sit on a shelf. Reminds me of my buddy Rick who insisted his "birthday" be "birthmonth" instead. Blah blah blah. I'm important.
What do I care if an ipod killer has any impact on the ipod? What kind of weirdo would be primarily interested in buying something other than the ipod because they have some strange obsession or interest in seeing the ipod market dominance come to and end... FINALLY!
I'm simply interested in alternatives... some of which are functionally better, for a better price. So far, I haven't shed a tear about missing out on the popularity points that come with the ipod.
I'm a bit surprised that they didn't go with a user-serviceable battery.
I'm sure it won't present quite the same fiasco as it did with the ipod because they'll be prepared with an actual plan this time, but it's still a bad idea. Back with the ipod it went like this:
1) Bad ipod battery thinking 2) www.anythingbutipod.com 3) Buy a Sansa E2xx
Now I imagine:
1) Bad iphone battery thinking 2) www.anythingbutiphone.com (wonder if this exists yet, lol) 3) Buy a Sansa ??? or whatever comes along
The ipod killers are out there... tons of them. They just can't be found at Costco and there are 1/1000th as many accessories for them as for ipod. I'm sure there'll eventually be an iphone killer. In fact, I think a recent PopSci magazine mentioned an 'open source' iphone killer.
Fresh from a very long Windows 2000 experience and a four-month Windows XP experience along with a long-time Linux sys admin role puts me in a great position to assess Ubuntu.
Windows 2000, eh.
Hmmm, yes, I also found using Ubuntu to be quite a bit nicer than using my Apple//e. Prodos and the Appleworks UI are simply starting to show their age.

...to get the last humans to Utopia!
Microsoft has "no plans" for a smaller version of the 360.
Oh, you mean something that is even more likely to overheat and would probably exceed the current awesome 50-whatever% failure rate?
Yeah, I want that!

Is this quote about Email or Slashdot??
So with email, usually when I check it there is nothing interesting, but every so often there's something wonderful...
Oh no!

This is because you can't typically see a man's wallet in a photo of his face.

"non-user replaceable radioactive battery"
Sweet! Now, finally, I'll take the iPod plunge...

Yep, I'm sure about it. Read it again; you're focusing on the wrong thing.

Also good news for those who done forgot them gramma'h rules from the schoolin' days.

Clearly their lawyers are bored and need things to do. I suggest somebody tell them to watch the TV show "Chuck"... there's a C&D in the waiting...
That's true, but it's necessary. Posting stories with actual detail has been patented and they don't want to be sued for infringing...
What can you possibly expect from communists, anarchists, or just plain freaks? The truth? lol.
