  1. Re:The reason why new Macs are so much faster? on Intel Software Development Products for OSX · · Score: 3, Insightful

Actually, the biggest single hardware reason isn't the processor but the bus speed. For example, my 9-month old (snif!) PowerBook 15" running at 1.67 Mhz on a 167 MHz (10:1) bus. The competative 1.67Mhz model of new MacBookPros have a 667 MHz bus = a shade under 4x speed difference. Then you can add in the better Intel-optimized compilers, GCC libraries, etc, etc...

I agree with Tree - it's is a good, if not great editor. It's fast on virtually any Mac...I've been using it since version 3 and I'm staying at 6 only because of the update prices.

I'll move to TextWrangler for now because for my needs I can't justify the high upgrade costs. I do think it's a great editor though and it deserves its due respect.

I was actually thinking that it was a pretty shrewd move on their part - cannibalize the lower end of the market by offering a proven free app with the best features of BBE, while retaining the upgrade link to the more-faithful pro market. I can see Smultron and a few other dying out in favor of the free TextWrangler.

The only thing I miss in TW is Rendezvous integration - then it would knock out SEE (which isn't free anymore, I believe).

No - but that's a bogus barrier since it legitimately allows you to play your files on the iPod. I choose the music, not the format (I avoid MS like the plague it is) and so I see no difference between converting to WMA or OGG or MP3 or whatever. The bullshit is when someone tells me I have to pay to listen each time's it's played. Enter DRM'd WMAs - keep that shit off my iPod.

I think it's not that Sony had 2 models in the top 10, but rather they had at least 5 more out of the top 10 - too many models, too little differentiation. It's a small segment of the market (compared to all PC sales, which PDAs often feature as a companion piece) and I can't say for myself that Sony offerend a unique vision that I focused in on. The thumb-wheel was a blessing, but aside from pushing Palm along with screen quality and networking features there wasn't anything I'd jump to Sony for. IMHO, of course. YMMV.

Add to this that at some point they had to decide between PDAs and phones, as the market also has been doing, and that ment also choosing between Symbian and Palm. It's complete speculation of course, but it does open the door to Sony adopting Symbian entirely in all (non-laptop) mobile technology.
