    One argument is that mosquitoes have no ecological benefit and that the world will be better off without them.

    But you are talking from a human point of view.If you look at it from Nature/Earth/Gaia 's point of view , mosquitoes are quite important.By spreading diseases they tend to keep populations of pesky species down.

    Diseases etc are nature's way of controlling populations from expanding beyond its capability to cope.The fact that , Humans have been able to control these natural controls doesnt necessarily mean its good for earth.

    I agree that private ftp's must have a hoard thats wonderful but how do i find out about them?and then gain access to them?

    Well Said , I refuse to converse with anyone who doesnt speak in an oxbridge accent.

    Sarcasm aside , I find it a bit funny that a majority of the posts complain about the standard of indians' English.The Indians write quite well though they do tend to pronounce all the syllables while speaking.

    When one compares English as she is spoke and the bastardised amalgation of German , Italian , Irish and Scotch accents that is the American accent , they resemble each other as caviar compares to a hog 's trough.

    Americans , you are wonderfully creative , knowledgeable , smart people but please dont complain about other poeple's mangling of English.What you have done and do to it is much , much worse.

    that he was in the US.In our small country , England , the Govt would charge the old lady , for scaring the burglar.

    On a serious note , this is a very big issue.Unlike the US , where the rights of home owners using force against burglars are quite clear , in the UK this is a grey area.Home owners can use reasonable force only and that is decided by the courts.

    according to the BBC , Cohen was about to give it to Apple before he consulted his father.The Dad told him Apple didnt have a leg to stand upon and probably this case is going to be settled in the courts.

    How many of us would have folded right away because we dont have the luxury of a house hold legal advisor?

    Sir David Attenborough who set the tone for BBC 2 (science, fringe programs) in the 60's when he was the first director general of the 2nd channel there...

    Sorry to be pedantic , but i think you mean controller which means he ran the channel.Sir David was never the director-general , who actually runs the corporation itself.

    As an aside , he's my favourite TV presenter with his beautiful and slightly eccentric nature documentries.Michael Palin , though quite good , isnt as pleasing some how.

    here's hoping against hope that we might have a similar law sometime soon.But whilst Blunkett is busy pushing his blunkettcard i doubt any thought will be given to the man on the street.

    Scientists' equivalent of visiting Everest is much more interesting. The Earth's rotation causes a 20-kilometre bulge at the equator, making Chimborazo volcano in Ecuador the highest mountain above sea level

    I have always believed that Everest's height was measured wrt the sea level.Do these people mean that if the sea level at ecuador was adjusted to the sea level at Everest ?

    i imagine the license fee is a miniscule amount and probably is cheaper than paying a solicitor's reatiner just in case IBM vs. SCO doesnt result in a clear victory for IBM.

    I am in the UK too and there is a clear reason i stay with AOL : its cheap and reliable( Fingers Crossed).

    For years AOL offered me a reasonably priced dial up service that usually provided good D/L speeds and was rarely difficult to sign on , no matter what time it was.(The only other provider which could match AOL in dial up was BT internet.)

    AOL currently provides me Broadband at the same price as dialup and more importantly is unmetered , compared to all other ISP's which had till last week , monthly caps.

    AOL is cheap and cheerful ,What more could i ask for?

    And when it comes to reliability , everybody remembers Bulldog's shenanigans last month.Imagine , the ISP of the year blundering up so badly.

    PS Browse the forums at adslguide.org.uk for subscribers comments on their ISP's.Mostly illuminating and sometimes horrifying .

's stated policy that its editors decide the 'flavor' of /. , have a subsidiary page where users prefer to read the stories at their mod point status. /.should as well move to a system where a post is ranked as either the median or average of mod points instead of the simple addition system.This will prevent too many +5 mods. /. defends freedom on the internet, it should give its readers a bit of a say as well.
